King's Field thread?

I've been playing King's Field 2 (JP 2, that is) and while I enjoyed exploring the first area quite a lot, after I entered the mines and the surrounding area I've lost momentum and feel like I'm trudging through a not very interesting and visually repetitive maze. Does the game open back up into areas like the first? I'm okay with dungeon crawling since I completed and highly enjoyed Shadow Tower, but I just feel lost right now.
