That catchphrase wasn't there in Japanese. The translation team put it in because originally Cloud would constantly say "whatever" in Japanese and it became really popular in Japan, so tge genius translators thought it was totally the same to shoehorn it into Squall's dialogue.

It's not that it wasn't there, but it wasn't there NEARLY as often. There are some situations where Squall says something equivalent to "whatever," but it got blown out of proportion in the US, and they just crammed it in everywhere.

I saw some side-by-side JP to US comparisons a few years back, and they changed several scenes just so they could cram a "whatever" in there. It made Squall come off as more of an uncaring ass than he actually is.

No, this is incorrect. The acktually who came up with this mistranslation doesn't understand context at all. 悪かったな is entirely sarcastic and dismissive not a genuine apology. It's something he says when he wants somebody to just drop a subject.

The best possible translation for it is, in fact, 'whatever'.
