Games that are enjoyable just because of the music?

Sonic adventure is broken as fuck. It barely functions and yet it's fun to play. Any level with good music just becomes a cozy fuck around like a kid playing in the park. The random deaths, shitty homing attack or just running into a wall and losing all your speed don't matter. You're jamming, you're having fun and all it's flaws just fall away.

What other games have this same aspect to them? Poor gameplay but great music.

I personally find the music one of the worst parts of Sonic Adventure games. Cringe-core.

I'll go the other way: games that have incredible control, flow, etc. but are somehow not as fun simply because of the music.

Mega Man 4 has some of the best tracks in the series for the stages themselves, but the boss theme is lame as hell. As a result fighting robot masters in that game feels boring to me, even for fast-paced ones like Pharaoh or Drill Man (when he's not in the ground, anyway). The game still rocks but I've always preferred the first three games and even 7 over 4 despite 4 having arguably the best mechanics/controls in the series, and I think a large part is because the boss fights feel underwhelming due to the song choice. 5 has this problem too but 5 is already the weakest in the series to begin with so it's hard for the music to make a huge impact.

That's just the character themes though. The level themes (outside of Knuckles in SA2) aren't cringy at all.

E102's theme is probably the best charachter theme in both SA game, along with one of the best pieces of music period:

Well music the music itself is usually pretty good; it's the vocals that usually ruin it for most people. So of course the only one without vocals is the best.

Miracle Warriors (the Master System's port of Haja No Fuuin) is a clunky, archaic grindfest of a role playing game. Every few weeks or so, I put another couple of hours into it.

The world map is pretty small, and is enclosed by stone walls for some mysterious reason. A characters HP and experience points are represented only by bars, not with numbers. Only one of your party members can do anything (attack or use a magic item) in a given round of combat. You only ever face one monster.

On the overworld map, you can only see grid of 7x7 map tiles. Even though the map is small, it takes a bloody long time to explore it all.

There are so many discouraging things about this game, but I love playing it. I love spreading out the game map and putting a miniature on it, moving it after I've taken a few steps in the game (eventually I'll track down one of the Japanese Mark III releases that comes with an official mini).

The music is a big part too, it gets me pumped to collect more gold and fangs so I can assassinate some Holy Beasts to arm myself against Terrarin.

I'd recommend Miracle Warriors soundtrack to anyone, but the game play is really only for people that enjoy pre-DQ video rpgs.

>Sonic adventure is broken as fuck. It barely functions

Some of you post as if you do not understand how words work. Barely functional is an obnoxiously wrong exaggeration.

Sonic 2006 is "barely functional," not either of the adventure games.

Actually, I played '06, and not even THAT counts as barely functional, though it's cutting it close I must admit.

Barely functional is the absolute minimum for a game to work. The way I see it is that if a game has only the most basic controls and enemies, has a plethora of glitches, and has many things that just don't work or not appear from time to time, it's barely functional. At least '06 has unique things like Silver's gameplay, which is playable.

I really have to agree with >>4166490 here. I actually find both Adventure games to control quite well. The only parts of the game that make me angry is when the level design is off, or when the stage has an annoying gimmick that isn't present in other stages (Mad Space, Final Chase, etc.)

>> No.4166556

Oh and the music is phoenominal for both games as well, though I do think SA2 has its hiccups (Half of the character themes, The Supernatural, etc)

I don't know about you guys, but I think the game is worth looking past its flaws and enjoying the game that is there, which is half-decent in a worst case scenario.

>> No.4166592

>>4166496
People lump Adventure 1 in with Adventure 2 for some reason.
Adventure 2's issues are the camera fucking up and just general game design flaws. It's far from what I'd consider a glitchy game.
also, one guy keeps saying it's only SADX that is glitchy -- but original 1999 SA1 on DC does shit like throw you sideways out of loops and the lot (admittedly, I've never fallen straight through the floor on the DC like in SADX on GC)

and even SADX at its worst isn't Sonic '06
and the actual worst thing about '06 is the mach speed shit (also, Silver -- it's decidedly awful because physics objects don't work properly in '06), the rest of the game, awful as it handles, still functions and the stage design is actually fairly decent

>>4161397
Live and Learn sounds like it was something Gioeli's actual band (Hardline) would play.
actually, the big three final boss/main themes of SA1/2/Heroes all sound like that with that big late-80s/early-90s hard rock sound

I knew someone was going to post this, but I genuinely love recruiting random ass characters (people will disagree), the battle system (people will disagree), and all those minor character mini storylines (people will disagree). Music, 2D graphics and 3D graphics are all top notch too.
