What are some bad games that had a ton of ideas you really liked?

I've always liked Simon's Quest but I have to admit it's pretty lacking in some areas. Still, it hits so many notes that I love.

A sense of time passing, a big open world to explore and mysteries to figure out.

Super Hydlide

>> No.3981298

I've always liked Virtual Hydlide a lot but you have to both appreciate that rough 2.5D aesthetic AND the almost arcadelike mechanics so it's no surprise it gets shit on a lot.

What ideas had it than?

Virtual Hydlide is the Dark Souls of Saturn games.

For back then it was one of the only open world adventure games with an over the shoulder third person camera and it's also one of the earlier games to feature randomly generated worlds. Virtual Hylide was an ambitious game but that ambition led to a game that ran like absolute dogshit.

It's exploitable, unbalanced and the magic system is too grindy but I like it the most out of the NES FFs
I liked the levelling system, it really made me feel like I earned my stats through my actions in combat
it brought the front/back row and made weapon switching possible mid battle which was also nice
Wish it had a hacking community as dedicated as the one for FFT that would fix some of its flaws

I feel I would really like the game if it ran at least at 20 fps. The slideshow framerate is simply a killer, I can't enjoy that. There's no way the Saturn couldn't do better.

Most of Riot's games feel unfinished but with interesting concepts

Not saying you'll like it, but have you tried the MSX version Hydlide 3? It's better than the Mega Drive/Genesis version.

Sadly, this is Telenet and their other divisions in a nutshell. Mugen Senshi Valis and Gaiares were great, though. Edo no Kiba feels incomplete but it isn't that bad.

>>3982515
none of the Valis games are good
even Valis 1 on PCE CD is pretty jank, and it's the most promising of the lot by far
It's a damn shame, because I desperately want to enjoy them.
spent hours with them (particularly 3 on Genesis and 1 on PCE CD, being the most fun ones) and found them all really lacking and kind of wonky

at least Gaiares is pretty good
I'm looking through their list of self-developed games and an absurd amount are a bit awful.

I like digitized graphics and thus like the way the game looks. I wish it just playable.

>>3982547
Gaiares is fucking impossible though, I don't find it fun to play. Valis games are fun basically just to sound test. Super mediocre but the music is nice.

ValisIII on genesis is a good aciton game, but Other Valis game in market are not good as it.

I would personally go with Mission Humanity, rather than type out here why and why it didn't work I'll just link this review:

Gaiares is tough but not impossible. It's a bit like Kirby except difficult, it's all about using the right power ups for the right sections. It's so worth it though, game gets crazy. It even turns into a castlevania shooter for a level.

Jesus Christ, Falcom. I loved the plot, the characters, and (with a couple exceptions) the level design. But the controls. Just seriously what the fuck.

Interesting. How does it compare to, say, Daggerfall?

Holy shit bro, watching videos for this on YouTube and seeing the player character walking around and doing stuff looks EXACTLY like some YouTube parody video made by some schumck in his basement.

Other than that it seems pretty cool for its time.

Daggerfall is still enjoyable with all its faults which I can't say about Virtual Hydlide.
