The biggest difference between modern and retro games is the shifting of focus from gameplay to art assets.

Any looser can pick up and draw a picture. See the credits of any modern game; it consists of 95% artists.

Only a handful of people have the ability to plan and program a fun game, let alone on limited hardware.

I remember back then, when all my friends were playing this game and trying to tell me how amazing the graphics were. I know they sure looked great from the commercials, but when I finally saw it in person and realized that those were just cut scenes and the actual gameplay was comprised of pre-rendered backgrounds and blocky polygons, I was pretty unimpressed.

That said, years later, I'm finally playing this game on my own for the first time, and the graphics have a certain charm. I think they look better in 240p, though.
