No. They initially planned it to be sorta RPG, had messy rehaul which is largely responsible for Romero's departure. The main problem is that game only feels right when you have quad damage, all enemies feel like bulletsponges, possibly to artificially prolongate the game. Malice mod for Q1 is very good, though rough sometimes.

Move to a fully realized 3d renderer required too much processing to have enemies in the counts of Doom. So to balance the performance monster health was increased.

Yeah it's understandable, but coupled with weird weapond design it gives an impression of horribly underpowered arsenal compared to Doom. I always felt that shotguns in Quake actually shoot with compressed air only, due to the sound and pathetic damage.

>>3643053
I don't remember if Steam's version comes with music, but you should get the music because it is that good. In any case once you have Quake installed you should get Quakespasm, which is a modern port that is true to the game's original style, fixes a lot of bugs, removes old limits and has none of that flashy shit kiddies are so fond of these days (like Darkplaces or that Epsilon shit).

Singleplayer is great, especially on Hard and Nightmare. Doom and Quake SP are very different beasts though. You can't really play Quake like you play Doom. Monsters are more resilient and work better as a team than in Doom. Maps are also usually more cramped but take full advantage of the full 3D world.

>>3643091
Enemies will feel like bulletsponges if you use the wrong weapon against them. Enemies go down quickly if you use weapon combos. Weapon switching is instantaneous, so try it before whining.

>Enemies go down quickly if you use weapon combos.
There is no way to kill ogre with less than 2 rockets, 4 point blank shots from double barelled shotgun or 10% of your nailgun ammo, without quad. It simply feels wrong.

>> No.3643181

>>3643156
It's also partially weapon design too, low polygon and texture limits don't give enough animation detail to suggest recoil. My personal favourite though is the grenade launcher, it feels extremely nice to see corpses explode to bits.

How does that feel wrong? That enemy would be no challenge if it had less health. You can kill ogres quite fast if you empty a dozen nails in them with the SNG and then immediately fire a grenade. It's much faster than 4 SSG shots in fact, probably faster than 2 rockets since the RL is slow between shots.

The enemies in Quake are faster and more dangerous than the ones in Doom anyway.

Quake's enemies take more shots to kill, but Quake's weapons also have a faster rate of fire than Doom's. It's a kind of balance that emphasizes aggression and consistency in player positioning over hit and run "jousting" and peekaboo shooting like in Doom. I guess you could play Quake like a pussy and run away from an ogre every time you fire off a shot out of fear of having a grenade shoved down your throat, but don't complain that you're taking too long to kill him.

>> No.3643203

>>3643187
Anon, ogre is just a mob you encounter on 2nd level. Having such mess to effectively eliminate completely regular mook is wrong. If there were additional textures at least like in Q2 to indicate that monster is taking damage, but you just shoot compressed air and nerf gun darts at him and then he falls suddenly.

>> No.3643214

>>3643203
It may be a mob you encounter on the second level but the game quickly tells you the ogres are not to be fucked with in comparison to grunts, knights, enforcers and scrags which are weak and die in a few shots. Are you going to tell me that fiends should have less health too since they also are introduced in the second level? Doom didn't have additional textures either for the walking doors that are barons of hell.

>> No.3643225

>>3643214
Grunts and enforcers only appear in 3 levels. Knights and Scrags still manage to take a point blank shotgun shot before dying. Fiends are introduced in sorta boss style like barons were, so it's understandable why they are bullet sponges.

The game places a much higher emphasis on grenade/rocket launcher use, you aren't mean to be blazing through enemies with the double barreled shotgun, which is more of an emergency weapon this time. With some of the most common enemies dropping rockets, there's really no excuse here.

Quake 1 has a criminally underrated singleplayer. It lacks Doom 2's enemy variety but it makes up for it with consistently great level design.

I didn't like E2M1 and E4M1 either but I thought E3M1 was excellent. And I wouldn't call E2M1 or E4M1 cheap or phoned in at all, I just don't find them very fun to play compared to the rest of the levels.

Episode 4 has its own unique style that's polarizing, and I didn't really enjoy it at first but it's something that I've grown to appreciate. I don't consider it badly lit, I think it's just meant to be dark and use that darkness both as part of its aesthetic style and as a gameplay obstacle just like some parts of Doom did. I guess it is kinda jarring that you go through three episodes of the game never really encountering dark areas then suddenly episode 4 uses it heavily as part of its motif. I never really liked Sandy Petersen's work in the Doom games but I think his work in Quake is pretty good.

I grew up with Quake 1, and even to this day, I still go back and play it. It's a lot of fun, in my opinion, with pretty varied level design, some cool monsters, interesting power-ups, and so on.

I would definitely recommend it. Especially since it's on sale on Steam right now for $5 USD.

it's pretty funny when doom babbies complain about 'bullet sponge enemies' when it used to take an hour in OG doom to kill cacodemons with the regular shotgun/chaingun. not to mention the damn thing took an hour to reload and came with that disgusting input laggy feel. shooting all those useless imps, pinkies and what have you with it felt so goddamn boring.

doom is fast in player movement alone. in every other aspect it's slow. enemies are slow, their projectiles are slow, their reaction speed is slow. You're literally not in any danger in any mode apart from nightmare for the original iwads. it's a mechanically boring af vapid experience which caters to the casual retards that engulf this shithole.

I don't know about Quake (other than on Steam) but you can find GZDoom online for free, and find the Doom.WAD and Doom2.WAD files for free as well, allowing you to play them vanilla. Then you can get things like Russian Overkill, Brutal Doom, and so on. There are plenty of tutorials for how to do it.

Here's GZDoom's download page:
https://gzdoom.drdteam.org/page.php?page=download

You'll need Doom.WAD to play the original Doom and Doom2.WAD to play Doom 2. Think of GZDoom as kind of an emulator, and the WAD files as roms. You can also get Heretic.WAD, Hexen.WAD, and Strife.WAD.

Once you get that all up and running, you may want to play other WADs to change gameplay. Levels, weapons, monsters, total conversions, there are WADs for all of that. I especially recommend BrutalDoom.

It's fun, better if you get good and learn to go sonic speeds. It's not as good as Doom for SP though. Worse if you're ammo conservative because the weaker weapons are significantly weaker than using a rocket/grenade to aoe a group and at a certain point they start giving you enough rockets to kind of use them more liberally and sort expect you to learn to do so rather than rely on the conventional weapons which will strain that ammo much more greatly. For example an enforcer drops 5 cells when they die. Only thing that uses cells is lightning gun which uses 20 cells per second at 30 damage per and they have 80 health. So, you really need to tap it spot on to maintain ammo stocks that way. If you use a shotgun you get nothing and have to rely strictly on pickups. Doom had rather low health for grunt enemies and threw ammo at you rather readily for the most part aside from what was hidden and allowed for saving big weapons for big enemies.

No, download it. Run quack using a modern sourceport like ezquake or darkplaces.
