Is this the pinnacle of RPGS?

More like the downfall of them.

I love Legend of Dragoon, OP, but you'll find that you and I are in the minority with that opinion here on /vr/.

be prepared for quite a grind, unless you manage to save up all your money the entire game to buy enough legend casques or whatever headgear it was that has the insane mdef to make it possible to bring anyone other than Shana/Rose/Meru to a boss battle.

No, it's not as bad as it's rep on /vr implies, but it's not the pinnacle either. It's a good 7/10 RPG, definitely worth playing, especially at the time, but not fantastic by any means.

>> No.3507494

LoD is a good game but people confuse its very vocal cult fanbase and are lead to believe its an amazing game.

It has many problems that detract it from being truly special, but its still a solid experience, but one that frustrates me more than enthralls me on replays

on a related note, is panzer dragoon saga playable on emulators? decently, i mean.

Breath of Fire 4 and Grandia are better, as far as Playstation JRPG's go.

Phantasy Star 4 and Skies of Arcadia are the best of all time, though.

I think we can all agree that its OST is fantastic, regardless of the game's overall quality.

Not really,it has a few decent tracks here and there but nothing exceptional.
Plus, the actual samples are painfully low quality and full of noise, which hurts some of the better compositions a lot.

They didn't. Chrono Cross and Legend of Dragoon are greatest hits games.

If anything is a "pinnacle", its FF7. It isn't the best ever made, but everything is downhill in a hurry afterwards.

>If anything is a "pinnacle", its FF7. It isn't the best ever made, but everything is downhill in a hurry afterwards.

Everything Final Fantasy related, anyway. There were plenty of other JRPGs that were just as good if not better, most of which would have never left Japan or been released at all if it wasn't for FF7's massive boom in popularity.

additions and prerendered backgrounds were great
characters and story were ok, but the dialogue was butchered
world map was kinda meh, and switching discs to go to previous areas sucked
an ok game overall

I like battle systems like Super Mario RPG, Vagrant Story, LoD and Mother 3 which require some timing for their combos
what's the point of having combos in legaia or xenogears when you can't fuck them up?

>> No.3510181

Most average game ever played. Everything good in it is offset by something bad and vice versa. I enjoyed it, but I can't say it's a good game. It's an okay one, which is not bad, considering it came out when the market had a shitton of good jrpgs.

What are you talking about? I went through with Dart/Albert/Kongol as my main team and the only one who really ate shit in boss fights was Kongol, which was easily fixed by equipping him with a Spiritual Ring.

The only thing you ever need to occasionally grind are additions.

The pinnacle of jrpgs was probably Genso Suikoden 2 or one of the PS1 Final Fantasies.

>> No.3514969

>>3514904
suikoden 2 is really overrated, honestly, its a good game but its vastly overrated. The first game is nearly as good as 2 and better in some ways and its a sight bit more primitive of a game, so thats saying something about 2.

2 really got a little outlandish at points and went full retard with some plot elements from the first game that didn't really need to be expanded upon, like the outlandish vampire shit and talking sword comic relief stuff.

Also jowy is just delita except unlike delita having a somewhat bittersweet ending, getting the good ending in suikoden 2 basically makes its so jowy doesn't have to face any music for the things he did, its retarded.

>> No.3517009

>>3512021
But it was only occasionally, like doing 2 or 3 more fights to make up for times I failed my additions, if I never ever failed any addition once I wouldn't have grinded at all.
Anyways my point is that additions should be the only thing you ever grind, you literally can't ever be underleveled unless you make a point of trying to keep your level as low as you can, and they give you an abundance of gold throughout the game so you're never short on that either.
I never knew about it when i played, but I looked up the Legend Casque, the thing is only 10000G, how could you not afford that by the end of the game?

"Following the game’s launch in Japan, we learned from players that certain parts of the game were too difficult. The team re-balanced the gameplay for the release outside of Japan, so the US version was the complete version of the game that we were all proud of."

Technically, you still get a 32 item slot limit.

To get 64 in the jap version, you needed to play an optional minigame using PocketStation.
I'm not sure if this is possible using emulators.

Count the actual gameplay segments and the forced story cutscenes and longass conversation on anything, there's very little gameplay, which is made even worse by the fact that they're linear games and the battle design is shallow garbage, only FFIX is somewhat better because you have shittons of subquests to do, but it's still way too focused on cinematics and story instead of actual gameplay. That's what FF has always been good at since FFIV, production values and little else, they're not really good RPGs unless you don't know or play many games, or if you're young.

Can't speak for you but I did it often. I liked going to that town with festival as a kid and any time I wanted to do that, I would have to switch discs.

The game had garbage design for handling world map backtracking.

Even if I only had to do it once, it's enough to show the game didn't know how to plan properly and take it off the top spot in any list.
