What are the best retro Dragon Ball games /vr/?

>> No.3366773

Shen Long no Nazo is really fun if you Game Genie to have infinite health. The constantly depleting health mechanic due to Goku's hunger is simply a load of shit and literally ruins an otherwise fun, early Famicom game.

Fighters:

1. Super Butoden 2
2. Hyper Dimension
3. Shin Butoden
4. Bu Yu Retsuden
5. Idainaru Goku Densetsu

Non-fighting games:

1. Super Saiya Densetsu
2. DBZ Legends (could be considered a fighting game though, but definitely not traditional)
3. DBZ III: Ressen Jinzou Ningen
4. Super Goku-den (parts 1 and 2)
5. DBZ Gaiden (Famicom)

It's apparently one of the best games on the Gameboy but nobody can translate it because of something about compressed text.

Why do so many early DBZ games have card mechanics, that's really strange to me.

Why is Attack of the Saiyans the best game in the franchise and will never get a sequel?

>> No.3366906

>>3366865

I guess it's because battling cards were very popular and Ban Dai sold millions of them, so probably they thought it'd be a good idea to implement a card system on the video games. It wasn't a bad idea really, once you get used to it, it adds some variety to the old turn based RPG combat formula, at least a bit.

Also, there was game that came with an actual device that you could attach to the famicom and use real cards to battle

Very interesting stuff, we might have still been seeing things like this into the 2000's if trading cards were ever as popular in the west as in Japan and China.

Before I knew of emulators and Super Saiya Densetsu, I always played Final Bout.
My uncle gave me a modded PS1 along with this game, and every day after school before Toonami started, I would play it. Looking back at it, it was a terrible game. But I was so hungry for anything DBZ at the time. The mystery of GT intrigued me so much, so seeing Super Sayian Oozaru Baby as the end boss was insane! And it made me appreciate the Japanese voice cast that I had never heard of at the time.

The year after was all about Super Saiya Densetsu, Hyper Dimension and Gundam Wing - Endless Duel

Final Bout was actually good stuff if you completely ignore the horrendous gameplay.

3D character models were something for back then, nowadays they look funny, like how SSJ4 Goku's tail looks like a sausage strip, but back in the day it was amazing, also as you said the voice acting, the fucking MUSIC! most if not all DBZ games got good music, thanks to based Yamamoto, and the best thing about the game was the intro video. I would often just put the Final Bout disc on my ps1 just to watch the intro, then reset and watch again.

The combat system is kind of a rock-paper-scissor thing, you can customize and upgrade your powers along the way.

Here's a simple guide to the basics

My absolute favorite theme from Final Bout, it's so good and nostalgic for me. I can just hear Freeza's chilling voice over this song

Yamamoto is a god among men... but here's the thing, he isn't a composer, he's mainly an arranger. He's the guy who did the original arrangements for Cha-La-Head-Cha-La, for example, but he didn't compose it, that was another guy.

He was great doing soundtracks for games, or doing the Hit Collection stuff under the "Project Monolith" band. He is a great sound guy all around, even if he "rips off" music from others.
The truth is that if he never admitted it himself, like apparently he did, nobody would have noticed. What about Yuzo Koshiro? Everybody knows he ripped off most of his stuff from other places, but his talent isn't the composition, or a few riffs and beats that sound similar, it's the whole sound of it.

Thanks for the link! I may now be finally be able to beat it after ~15 years.
I already knew that it used jankenpon as a mechanic but I could never figure out what action beats another.
I managed to get to Yamcha in Totsugeki-Hen once and he utterly destroyed me by being at least twice my speed.

Dragon Ball on WonderSwan Color is a remake of Goku Den on Famicom. Alternatively the first 3 Famicom games, Shenron no Nazo, Daimaou Fukkatsu and above mentioned Goku Den are all pre Z games.
