Shinobi tried much more things and did it right most of the time. Shadow Dancer, Revenge, 3 and the Game Gear titles all play and feel different but are great games by its own merits.

I never cared for Gaiden arcade. It was a sadly generic beat em up. Shinobi, Shadow Dancer were both better. Action/adventure platformers that were legendary.

Sure, that's why most people assume the classic series to be better than they really were. Gaiden Arcade was mediocre at best and the Nes trilogy had a great first game followed by two expansion packs a la Megaman.

Nothing wrong with that but Shinobi actually took a lot of risks with most of their new entries and the devs were always able to make it work somehow.

NG NES holds up against any Shinobi game though, and the non-retro ones are great too.

The game works as a direct sequel of sorts to the original Shinobi. In the Japanese verson you play as Joe's son. In the Western release it's just Joe again, for some reason.
