how the fuck am i supposed to beat this idiot

>> No.2678125

Get ahead then cock block the entire way using rear view.

>> No.2678127

First person view makes it easier to time your drifts, I think.

>> No.2678128

I think both of the original ridge racer games required you to block to beat those guys. I never figured out how to do it otherwise.

Better off playing R4 or rage racer IMO. Rage racer has some tough bits without dumb blocking.

>> No.2678130

You mean the instinct to block doesn't come naturally in all racing games?

>> No.2678134

I would block but I've played the whole game in 3rd person mode plus that car is a bitch to drfit

I'm surprised. I never got anywhere playing RRR in third person, I only started to get good at the game once I switched to first.

at least it's not like in RR1, where you don't get a rear-view mirror and you still need to block, who the fuck thought that was a good idea

>> No.2678232

>>2678130
I never did it because it seemed like cheating. I probably did it a few times, out of frustration, but it seemed like playing dirty. I mean, if you knew your car and knew the track, you could just race the track perfectly and win, every time.

The announcer actively encourages you to "CRUSH THEM!" in RRR.
I love that announcer.

dat sick dithering is fine, I'm talking about the high resolution bad font overlay in the bottom right corner, confirming that indeed, what they did, to get this picture, is taking a screenshot, which now has the info that a screenshot was taken, on it.
Usually having a screenshot is sufficient proof for me that one was taken, but the yellow text confirming it, really makes me feel extra certain.

Is that in any form intentional software dithering, or the 16bit dithering typical for early 3D acceleration?

>> No.2678432

I've also heard people claim the older ridge racer games were impossible to beat without an NGcon or whatever that twisty controller was. As someone that's beat the shit out of everything 98+, it sounds about right.

>> No.2678550

>>2678232
It's not cheating, it's a legitimate racing tactic.

Cutting corners is cheating. Running other cars off the track is cheating. Blocking is simply holding on to your position.

>> No.2678563

>>2678550
FIA rules allow you to stay your line, or change "lanes" exactly once. If you go out of your line several times, with the intention of getting into the alternative line the opponent behind you picked, it's blocking and subject to penalties.
While games are not FIA sanctioned, the point is that even professional racing recognizes a difference between holding your position, and blocking an opponent.

>> No.2678574

>>2678563
Blocking rules are mostly in place as a safety measure because it is prone to accidents.

There are no rules about blocking in NASCAR and if you do it it's all on you if you get into a wreck because of it. But it's not considered cheating.

>Blocking rules are mostly in place as a safety measure because it is prone to accidents.
Not at the FIA. If you're visibly slower than the person behind you, racing enthusiasts would want you to be passed, fair and square. These folks are interested in figuring out who's the fastest, not the widest.

NASCAR rules are not public, from what I can tell, so I can't look up their blocking regulations. That said, Oval racing is a bit different, due to heavy drafting

>> No.2678619

>>2678574
That's because NASCAR is a bunch of moonshiners on the run, while FIA is a group of english and french nobles, that know how to behave sportsmanlike

the dithering is done in hardware by the PS1

it's a lot easier with the neGcon, but you can totally play through all of them just fine with the digital pad

So the dithering is effectively "just" an artifact, and it makes sense for emulators that already disregard resolution and texture filtering, to also disregard the dithering, for the same reason.

We are talking Ridge Racer here right? I don't think the FIA was watching.
You've got to block the angel, at least once, maybe twice if I remember right to win, it's way, way faster than what you can get. If you don't block, you lose.
It might me easier to beat it on the reverse track. But I'm not too sure, might be worth it to try it though.
