What do you Guys think about playing emulators on a smart phone can it Work or not?

I wouldn't want to play anything action based like that, but for strategy or RPGs it's probably fine. Those aren't about controls.

I didn't care for it when I used a friend's phone. It works for certain games like RPGs, adventure games, and puzzles, but playing something that demands quick responsive inputs like a fighting game or a plaformer is tough. I use a sony xperia for my phone emulating it has a controller built into it. its great. Though there are other ways to have buttons with a phone or tablet.

>> No.2653379

turn based; yeah. click this click that ect ect
its not a game, its a task.

i loved Links Awakening on the handheld GameBoy, and on PSP i still played the game.

it just dosn't feel right on a mobile fone

>feel right /
Necessity is the mother of invention; Ergonomics was the father of design

>> No.2653384

It's why I don't use my phone for emulation: lack of physical buttons and fingers getting in the way of the action.

If you are gonna emulate off your phone, at least use a physical controller for it.

implying that only turn based games truly work.

i would love to have FF12 on my mobile

the issue that mobiles have is the input; platform/live explotration games need physical inputs to feel natural. having a touch D-Pad or touch analog stick doesn't feel right, doesn't work right, and sadly will never be right.

>>2653405

I agree with what you're saying about not having buttons or a dpad being an issue this is my opinion. >>2653365 It was just this bit I took exception to.

Even turn/tile based feels awful, so many times in pokemon I went the wrong way and got into a random battle because my thumbs kept missing a directional input. If you're more careful and patient it's not impossible or anything but good god is it better to look at just the screen and not ever your thumbs to make sure you're pressing on something right.

>> No.2653516

I find trying to use a virtual dpad to be hell on the thumbs.
I think it's because I roll about rather than slide or whatever you're supposed to do, so on a fixed surface it's using areas of the thumb that I normally wouldn't on an actual movable pad.

Time based RPG like chrono trigger will fuck you over too by making the wrong selections in the small time frame, plus catching the rat in the future is a huge bitch as it is and I thought I would have to give up the whole game when playing on my phone.

>> No.2653627

I hate it tbh.
The clickity click of the buttons/keys and the sensation of pressing them is part of the vidya experience, especially when playing older games.
Touch-screen a shit, the day mechanical buttons are done away with for touch bullshit is the day vidya dies.

Christian Whitehead did a pretty good job with controls for the sonic ports, but then, that's really just left and right with an action button.

NBA Jam had a decent control system, where anywhere touched on the left of the screen would become your 'joystick', so if you missed the exact placement of the stick, it would move to where your thumb now is, allowing you to slide to the direction you want.

Street Fighter 4 seemed to work well too. Customize where you put your buttons.

When you need to switch between buttons, like A/B a lot you'll lose your place a lot, which is bad for 'quick' games.
It's not impossible, but I think emulators just go for a quick solution, making buttons at X instead of a range of X +1 to +5 or something.

I also have a personal problem where I really push into the screen as if it were a controller, which isn't so good.

Yeah, but it has to be games that require you to do as less instant actions as possible.

So RPG with turn battles are the perfect fit to emulate, since you can take your time to make decisions.

That's really interesting, it's pretty rare that these ports of retro games to mobile actually do more than put them in an emulator with a bad GUI and call it a day. Thanks for the replies.

>> No.2655317

I could deal with a Gameboy emulator since the system was nearly the same shape a phone is nowadays, and there are some emulators that put the buttons where they would be with the 'screen' above them where your fingers don't block it.

Still, I'd need to be able to resize the buttons. Without being able to feel them they need to be bigger, so you don't end up pressing the wrong one.

People talk about how bad ebooks are compared to the real thing, and it's even worse with games.

The pic makes it look a little bigger I think.

I got mine on Amazon for $12.99, with Prime shipping. It's on eBay cheaper, but ships from China.

I like mine for what it is. Buttons are mushy, but it's fine for casual games. I carry my keys on a belt loop already, so the extra bulk doesn't matter to me. But it could just as easily be carried in a pocket.

its a bit rough with some action/platformer games.

I have played MMBN and Pokemon games repatedly on touchscreens though. Turn based games are obviously not a problem, but I honestly surprised myself with how well I did in Battle network since the fights are in real time. The grid aspect definitely helped.

As with everything mobile, it's needlessly gimped and awful. Tonnes of the emulators (that are completely free on PC) require paid versions for normal features such as ePSXe's pay-to-save and resume. The touch screen controls give you no response whatsoever and there are no physical boundaries you can feel. Tactile feedback is important when playing videogames. Due to the impreciseness of the controls, action games are right out.

Just hack a PSP.

I've played around 60 hours of snes/gba games at work when it's been slow using my 6 plus. Made me realize how much of a hassle it was to download roms. In fact, it inspired me to make http://theromdepot.com/.. As long as you're playing games that don't rely on heavy platforming, you should be okay. I beat Super Mario RPG, 7th Saga, Earthbound, Final Fantasy Iv, Pokemon, and a few others. I'd definitely recommend some kind of controller if you can. Exactly my thoughts. I have no problems with touch controls so I play not just RPG or turn based games, but more action-packed ones too. I can't say if it's how it's because I got used to it, it just doesn't pose as a hassle. Maybe this's a result of so many android games I already played so when I started emulating it wasn't much of shock.

I just enjoy separating my games like this:

Emulating a console? Than I use the PC, connect the proper control for that console in order to simulate the closest experience of the real hardware. I could connect it to my tv but these nowadays are too big for a PS1 or N64 resolution so my PC screen is perfectly fine.

Emulating a handheld? Than I use my android cellphone, feels portable like the real thing and I always have it with me, plus a ginormous library that does nothing to my phone's memory.

Slow paced games like RPGs work fine with virtual controls, especially if you add a little rumble for every touch so there's some sort of feedback.
They suck for something fast-paced though. I tried Panel de Pon on emulator because I wanted a good puzzle game on my android and it was a pain in the ass.
