>Favorite Silent Protagonists

Every fucking game up to 16 bit era had silent protag's
Does WAKAWAKAWAKA mean Pac Man wasn't silent?
The squeaky sound of Jump Man in donkey Kong?
"Boing" sounds that usually accompany jumping like Sonic?
Doesn't Doomguy grunt? What exactly is "silent" or do you mean the absence of actual coherent speech?

By that logic, few of these characters are silent. Link yells every time he attacks, Doomguy grunts when he's hurt, even Gordon Freeman makes a faint gasping sound when he touches fire in HL2.

Crash doesn't utter a single coherent "word" until Crash of the Titans in 2007, and before that, hearing any sounds coming from him is as rare as the above mentioned characters.

Silent as in they don't speak in actual sentences, or say words. Grunts are common for most silent protags these days. It's not like you can communicate in "UNF" or "AGH" unless you're a fucking ape.

>Every fucking game up to 16 bit era had silent protag's
No, not exactly. Lots of games had text dialog, not many had actual voice acting in the 8-bit to 16-bit era.

Silent protagonist does not mean they are literally silent. It means the character never says a word to anybody, not even to him or herself. They can still grunt and scream, because people, even mutes in real life, do that.

When you fall enough to take damage, I always thought that was a muffled "urghf" vocalization. But yeah, that's the only one, I think.

That's deaf people who don't speak, not mutes. The best actual mutes can do is gasp and cough, I guess.

Being a mute does not necessarily mean you can't grunt or scream. And being unable to speak due to deafness is still considered mutism

>> No.2611280

Judging by his complete inability to speak otherwise, I'd say it's just a coincidence.

>> No.2611323

One of the causes of not speaking, yes. One of the causes of being unable to physically make vocalizations out of their throat, no. Deaf people aren't all born with non-functional vocal chords, although some are. Some deaf people can even detect the presence of sounds, though not enough to discern what they are.

>>2610359

>Being a mute does not necessarily mean you can't grunt or scream

Yes, it actually does mean that. Being mute means your vocal chords don't work. Non-functional vocal chords don't allow for screams or grunts, since they both engage the vocal chords, as per your own definition of mutism being the inability to speak.

Seeing as you clearly did not even read the links I provided...

>an inability to speak, due to a physical defect, conscious refusal, or psychogenic inhibition.
>The condition of being unable or unwilling to speak as a result of a physical or psychological disorder.
> The inability or unwillingness to speak. A person who is mute cannot or does not care to talk. Someone who was mute was said to be dumb, not in the sense of being stupid, but in the sense of being devoid of the power of speech. The term "mutism" is specifically applied to people who, due to profound congenital (or early) deafness, are unable to use articulate language and so are affected by deaf-mutism. The word "mutism' comes from the Latin "mutus" meaning unable to speak.

Its not something I made up. Its actually defined that way. You're a sore loser who can't accept that he's wrong.
