First game: Sega CD, or perhaps PC.
Second game: SNES, but make sure you grab the Saturn version for the delicious CD Audio. PC version also had the same audio, even though it was missing a level as I recall (I think it was Lorenzo's Soil).

The Saturn version unfortunately changed ALL the background graphics, and a lot of them were completely different and much less impressive.

Agree with this guy, although some backgrounds in the Saturn version of 2 are impressive, mostly because of the parallax effect. The first level looks stunning on Saturn. The problem is that controls aren't as tight as they are on the SNES ver.

>mostly because of the parallax effect.

Which is funny because on most other levels they fucked up the parallax a lot compared to the SNES game. Puppy Love has 3-4 layers of parallax on Saturn (and a garish orange volcano theme), while the SNES one had per-line parallax (with a desolate "house in the middle of nowhere" look).

The Saturn could do linescroll no problem, so there was zero reason to change all of that, let alone rework the level graphics entirely.

Puppy Love on Saturn has the controls fucked (which is why it only requires 3 rounds, instead of the original 5, and it gives you a lot of HP). it's very hard to time your moves well on the Saturn, whereas on SNES I could do it flawlessly (if I was concentrated enough).
Also, while the volcanic background in Saturn wasn't bad, I found the original background to be more moody.
Still, levels like Anything but Tangerines or the circus level have gorgeous background work on Saturn ver.
