So, which system exactly is responsible for what? What's the necessity for the cross-over cable and an additional audio output from the sega CD? I'd like to know how this clusterfuck works.

Blast processing and don't wait for Nintendo to make one. That's all you need to know.

>> No.2474620

The 32X was the one that was completely unnecessary. They should've just focused on making the Saturn backwards compatible with the Genesis and Sega CD if they were really that concerned about Genesis owners not being able to afford a next-gen console.

>making the Saturn backwards compatible with the Genesis and Sega CD
I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be possible

just duct tape another 68k processor in there, the saturn had like 12 of those

Why wouldn't that have been possible? The GBA was compatible with the original Game Boy because it contained both a GBA CPU and a GB CPU. Same with the PS2 and the PS1.

Hell, the Genesis was practically designed to be backwards compatible with the Master System. The Power Base Converter simply serves as nothing more than a pin adapter.

and that was a bad idea because the master system library sucks

Clearly you haven't played much of the library then. There are some great arcade ports, as well as games like Zillion (kinda like Metroid, good stuff), Phantasy Star, the Wonder Boy games, and Sonic 1, 2 and Sonic Chaos (Sonic 1 and 2, despite their names, are completely different to their Mega Drive counterparts and are very good games in their own right).

Controversial opinion time: I actually prefer the Master System library to the NES library.

That was the initial plan (very early on).

The 32X is the main "console" here, acting as a Megadrive parasite. Its goal is to render everything that requires extra power (eg, polygons) or extra colors (which the Megadrive hardware can't possibly handle). The later part is why it has its own video output.

The Megadrive is being tasked my the 32X to render additionnal graphics, according to its limites. It is usually used for the HUD and / or the backgrounds. Its video is then fed back to the 32X with the cross-over cable, and the 32X mixes the video with its own stuff, as a layer.

The MegaCD is mostly used for storage in this configuration. I don't believe any 32XCD games used its processing abilities. Its audio output just makes it convenient to hook the system to some HiFi equipement.

The MegaCD adds more processing power and extras (eg, "Mode 7") to the Megadrive. The audio loopback cable you'd use if hooking up a MD1 is because the console itself is mono in design, and only the front jack outputs stereo - that's why you can't just use the A/V DIN for that, or the EXT connector.

The library is much better in Europe since the master system killed there.

Next you will say the controller was better too.

Or that having the pause button next to reset instead on the actual controller was a good idea.

SMS games that aren't shit:
Shinobi
Wonder boy
Alex Kidd
Sonic Games
Zillion 1
Phantasy Star
Ys

The master system had a pretty good, good game to bad game ratio.

Because the Megadrive already had too much legacy shit in it (full SMS hardware), and the Saturn was already too complex. Saturn was intended to be a clean break with lots of expansion potential and a long shelf life, but it failed so hard that they killed it as soon as they could.

It might have been possible to release a Megadrive adapter for the Saturn that holds the entire MD hardware inside (like how the Super Game Boy worked), since they got the system down to just 3-4 chips by 1996 or so.

Sega CD and 32x compatibility would have been right out though. Both of them were way too complex to cut down.
