While we're talking about Sega games that should have been ported, why the fuck doesn't Sega have more arcade games on Steam? The earlier ones could be ported by a 5 year old. The latest ones, I guess they're content to let die on PS3 and 360 even though the arcades use PC hardware. Sometimes I wish I could boot the head management out of Sega / Sammy and return them to their former glory with my pinky during breakfast. It's almost like they want to fail.

Not to the Saturn, but Data East did a Mega Drive downgrade. The System 32 architecture's different from the Super Scalar one (latter's X68000-based, former's RISC), which means it's less familiar within the porting community.

To be perfectly honest even though looks good it doesn't play that well. I'm happy they didn't call it Outrun 2 because it doesn't exactly portray the comfortable driving experience that the series is all about.
It's not a bad game though, I just don't think it deserves the outrun name.
Or maybe I'm just being autistic.
I didn't exactly like the music either, which is a big part of Outrun. I'm a big fan of Mitsuyoshi but I don't think it's his best moment.

But then again my whole point is moot since I only played it in MAME, and I don't think I even bothered assigning proper analogue controls, so I guess I'm just an idiot, I never actually got to play the proper cabinet experience.
Disregard what I said I suck cocks.

said this in another thread, but the framerate is the key
it's low as shit, and the scenes that run at 20+fps look like any other Saturn game
It's not even hard to believe this is running on real Saturn hardware.
AM2 managed to do crazy shit like VF2's Saturn port at 60fps in 480i (I think Fighting Vipers and Last Bronx look nicer, but they render 3D at 320x240 despite running in 480i, VF2 on Saturn renders 3D at a higher resolution than the arcade).

It looks so good because there's a lot of work put into the faces and the pre-baked lighting looks wonderful (there is zero dynamic lighting in that tech demo).

the character models are slightly more detailed than in Sega's 3D fighters for the machine
and the environments are as low poly as every other Saturn game (you can count the amount of polygons in some scenes on your hands, the framerate is usually pretty high during those parts of the video, too)

It's an impressive effort and very taxing on the machine, but it wasn't going to keep even a solid 15fps without some cuts.

>>2461139
Really? I think OutRunners' course design, look, and handling are ace as fuck. Wonderful game. Cool tunes, but not the best, so I'm with you there.

It desperately needed a port to SOMETHING OTHER THAN THE FUCKING GENESIS.

it's still one of the prettiest games ever, too
I can still impress people by showing them OutRunners and Galaxy Force II, Sega was on fucking point back then with Super Scaler-style graphics.

>>2459783
that's literally VF3 running in MAME, which has awful Model 3 support and doesn't emulate the protection properly

If they did VF3 for Saturn, it'd have to either a: have massively cut-down models or b: run at a lower framerate with somewhat heavily cut-down models (not happening)
and the DC was coming up, so it got bumped to it, like Shenmue

>>2459301

I think it looked pretty good for a Model 2 game, they might've had to tone down a bit some of the texture and water effects but otherwise it would've worked.

Closest thing we might've gotten was the water racing game on the dreamcast.

>> No.2462993

>>2462959
I'm not saying it doesn't look good for a Model 2 game, were' talking about SM2 here, the first big hardware capable of 3D texture mapping. But I'm saying that visually it doesn't hold a candle compared to Wave Race 64. It's not a fair comparison obviously since Model 2 is literally the genesis of real 3D and the other had more time to mature, but that's just how it is.

Super Hang-On. They ported Outrun, Space Harrier, Columns, Afterburner, frigging Quackshot got a port, but not Super Hang-On.

Cool Riders would have been interesting, but I doubt the hardware could take it.

>>2459728
>They already had to ditch 3d backgrounds in VF2 Saturn port.

VF2 was a pretty early Saturn game. 1995 xmas. There was definitely room for a lot of improvement.

I don't think they could've gotten the backgrounds to be uneven, but they could've made them very impressing regardless - check Last Bronx, and think of something that 1 ups that by a little.

Snow effect might have been possible in some way too.

Saturn could do some very impressive special effects, more impressive than the Playstation, but only as long as you did not aim to do realism - it had a very low colour palette.

Fighters Megamix was basically just the producer of Fighting Vipers and a couple of others in AM2 dicking around.

They added Rent-a-Hero, the car from Daytona, a prototype character from VF1, the original characters from Sonic Fighters, and even the AM2 palm tree logo as playable characters.

I imagine the VF3 moves got in because those were their most up to date assets.

Also apparently they wanted to do a Saturn rent-a-hero but it never took off, they only added him to Megamix as a nod to that (or probably reused a concept model).
