2458326 No.2458326 [Reply] [Original]

Let's have a nice FO 1&2 thread, shall we?
With Fallout 4 coming I've decided to play Fallout 1 and 2 again, but I end up doing the same build I did for the first time and playing in the same way.
What are the most fun builds and ways to play it?

>> No.2458351

The "Charming Talker" build (high char., int. and speech skill) and the "Steal Everything" build (high agil., luck and thief skills like 'sneak'). Stealing everything and pickpockething and getting away with it is great therapy for your inner scavenger.

>> No.2458359

>>2458351
i might try the steal everything char
i always use charisma and speech in my builds, though

>> No.2458362

>>2458326

Have you ever tried the dumb titan build? you just have to keep low into and melee everything, some dialogues are absolutely hilarious.

>> No.2458364

>>2458362
I've been wanting to that one too, but I got pissed of because of the content I was missing, but I'll give it another shot

Charisma is a completely useless stat in 1, and only worth it for party size in 2. Speech works just as fine with 1 CHA as it does with 10, save for the starting points. FO3 is the first game where CHA actually does something.

Melee build has always been my favorite, followed maybe by grenadier (simply because of how unusual it is) or some cookie cutter Energy/Speech/Lockpick when I just want a quick and clean playthrough (which I'm guessing is your "same build", so maybe not this one).

>> No.2458704

>>2458593
Interesting... i always thought that charisma affected the conversation options... and you're completely right about my "same build": small guns /speech/lockpick and my SPECIAL was low strength, low luck, average endurance and perception and high agility, intelligence and charisma.
Now that i think of it, it was a bit shitty, but i never used any guides and i felt pretty safe with this build

>> No.2458787

I am starting Fallout 2 soon and was wondering what a good build for someones first play through.

>> No.2458818

>>2458787
try the winning formula for fallout...
2 charisma
4 strength
8-10 agility
average - high perception
high intelligence
average endurance
low-average luck

traits:
gifted

skills:
small guns/melee
speech
lockpick

Try to go a bit pacifist, get speech high early on, if you want the first part of the game to be easy, go for melee and at least 6 perception.

But, most importantly, try to make your own costumized character, not this one exactly, you'll get a much better experience out of the game, it will be a bit harder though, and think for yourself when leveling.

ps: always pick the awareness perk at level 3

One of the absolutely strongest builds in FO2 is a close combat build based on either Unarmed (which will ultimately go for Power Fist) or Melee (which will ultimately go for Ripper and a Sledge) with Sneak as your secondary combat skill.

This example is for Melee:
Max Agility (this is always good in the first Fallout games).
Relatively high Endurance and Strength (don't max Strength though).
Charisma at either 1 or 4.
Lots of Intelligence, but not as important as STR/END/AGI
6 Perception.
Luck at whatever you feel like. It's a great stat for almost everything, but it's no biggie if you put it low.

Tag your preferred combat skill (Unarmed/Melee), Sneak, and whatever else you want (Speech is god in both 1 and 2, so it's a good choice even for combat characters).

Gifted is the most OP trait in the game, and if it's your first playthrough take it without question.
If you have a high luck, go for Finesse. Don't go for Heavy Handed, since it only really pays off in the early game. Never take Bruiser. Never take Fast Shot unless you have a very specific build (and this ain't it).

Better Criticals, Action Boy, Bonus HTH Attacks (NOTE: Not the same as Bonus HTH Damage), Bonus Move (Personal preference, not really mandatory), Silent Running (Only for convenience, doesn't really improve your character) are perks to aim for.

The strategy is basically to level up your Sneak to the point that you can walk as close as 3 hexes of an enemy with Sneak without being spotted, entering combat, running up and hitting them, then if needed walk away and leave combat in stealth. You use the Ripper to hit hard, and the Sledge to knock them back when you're low on AP so you get enough distance to Sneak and leave combat.

>>2458830
>If you have a high luck, go for Finesse.
This should read if you have LOW luck.
The lower luck you have, the more benefit you will gain from it.
Although there's nothing wrong with getting it if you have high luck either.

Post your face when you're a vault dweller and you're surrounded by rats, but you know you're a-okay because you got Ian at your back with the 10mm SMG

Doing a 10 luck / jinxed run now, headed straight for the Mariposa Base, on my way there i found the alien blaster and the nuka cola truck, although it only had nuka colas.
Managed to kill the first SM sentry without firing a shot, he was always critically missing. It's a very fun build, you should try it

You want more strength and endurance. No matter what kind of character you want to play, you have to go through a huge amount of mandatory fights against all sorts of critters and that will be a hassle with the low HP you have now. And your carrying capacity will be awful as well.

AGI gives you one pip more on your AP bar for every two points you have in it. You are kinda wasting points in chargen if you put an odd number.

If you don't have enough int for a talking-based quest, you can use it to complete them anyway if you know what you're supposed to say. For instance, you can talk to the Shady Sands farmer and use "tell me about Crop Rotation" to finish the crop rotation quest.

Some keywords can resolve some quests, and generally they are just there for some fluff and funny responses. It's kinda useless and not it's not really what keywords are relevant for a given character, no surprise it got axed in the subsequent games.
