Licensed retro games that are good aren't terribly common but the ones that are good are often amazing.

Video games used to be much cheaper, even from a world-class studio. Lots of TV/movie tie-in games were done by Konami, Capcom, etc., just because they were still dwarfed by the spending on other stuff.

I made a post on /v/ a few days ago about this game but nobody took the bait (aka cared).

Konami and Capcom were pretty fantastic when they worked with licenses.

The Simpsons game is one of the most superb examples. It looks accurate and it sounds accurate, and then the gameplay goes to the point where you kind of forget its a licensed game.

I had that feeling with Turtles in Time. It just felt so accurate towards the license.

Darkwing Duck for NES is pretty fucking good. It feels like a duck-themed Megaman spin-off.

It can get hard as balls too. Anyone else ever completed it?

No, Darkwing duck is the one slightly difficult platformer that no one on /vr/ has finished.

I love the game, I like what they did to the Megaman formula, and gave it duck and shield buttons.

I guess it makes sense to have a duck button anyway.

Sega's Disney-licensed stuff was also pretty great (Illusion series, Quackshot, Aladdin).

It was a different time, when the bigger budget attached to a license sometimes could translate into better dev teams and an ampler margin for pushing technical boundaries.

Today, the baseline of acceptable quality is so clearly defined that few projects shoot for anything above foolproof, by-the-numbers stuff; but it still happens some times, usually outside 'companion' licenses for movies and whatever.

Almost everything from the Disney Franchise on NES/SNES was at least decent, up to very good

>Chip & Dale
>Ducktales
>Darkwing Duck
>Aladdin
>Goof Troop, etc...

Most of the Simpsons games were pretty shitty, except the Beat'em up

Some Smurf, Asterix & Obelix and other european Plattformers were ok, not great but ok.

In the superhero categorie there are rarely any really good ones, can only think of the batman one for super nes (sidescolling beat em up)

For the most part, they used current publicity and cheated the little suckers for their money,... who gave a fuck, it was only children.

Chip n' Dale's got one of the best co-op modes in the entire NES catalog, like, fast-paced but approachable (probably a bit too easy, though)

I wish they gave DD the same revisited treatment as Ducktales. Too bad it's not as well-known.
I've been looking for fan remakes/games and stuff, but so far all I could find was this thing made by some russian guy : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRVJZrecGyI

The first Astérix for the Master System kicked so much ass.
The devs probably had no idea whatsoever about the setting beyond whatever 1-page brief dossier they got, but they came up with an awesome enough game for anybody to actually care about crazy Olympus bonus levels, giant octopi, mystical cauldron wastelands, and an evil Obélix who's out to git you.

nope, they came out in the worst time for franchise games, i don't know why but at that time you just knew it's gonna be crap if it had a license

Sweet, thanks dude
Wait, so DT and DD use the same engine? Impressive, I always thought DD used a modified Megaman 5 engine while DT was its own thing.

Asterix games in general are pretty great. I had the Snes one when I was a kid, it was absolutely beautiful and had a bunch fun levels fuck the caves though.
One of my friends also had the Playstation one which was basically a Mario Party clone.
I also found pic related in a flea market some years ago. It's ok, the graphics are alright, nothing groundbreaking but it'll keep you busy for an afternoon. Too bad it gets a bad rap since some french AVGN made a video about it.

>>2261598
Heeeeeeeeh
I think there's like a R&S add-on for 3d movie maker. That's the closest you'll get to a "quality" "video game".

Astérix on NES is pretty cool. Fun little platformer. It plays a lot like SMB3 with the walk-run mememtum but with its own unique mechanics. It's short and easy but worth a play, the musics are pretty good too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Zd81gVsfoI
That and The Smurfs on NES too. Both are PAL exclusive btw. The Smurfs is more challenging.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZ_2Ck1gBjQ

I used to play both all the time as a kid, they are very nostalgic games for me. Astérix, Smurfs, Tiny Toons Adventure, CnD, ( and SMB3) ... All of these are licence games except SMB3.

It's such a bummer Konami halfassed their port of this and Xmen by giving them to Backbone and then letting the license lapse. Considering that those were the only console ports.

It amazing how many little nods to Life in Hell there are. Especially the reference to Marge's secret bunny ears that were meant to be revealed in the last episode that never happened.

Speak for yourself, friend. I beat it way back when it came out. Granted, I played every day and learned all the patterns and secrets. I could get to Steelbeak's ship without continuing, but once I was there it was a huge pain in the ass. I've only beaten it twice. Once back when and once about 5 years ago when I got bored and decided to play through a bunch of my NES titles.

Konami licensed arcades were very faithful to the source material and had amazing presentation, so good music and graphics that people forget the fact that the gameplay was mediocre.
