The first RR is a good game, but it does have its share of flaws which somewhat ruin the experience :
>a couple of enemies are glitchy (notably the dogs which can bite you from 100 meters away ; and the big alien guys with the laser arms, which lasers can go through walls...). On top of that the annoying titty hitscan bitches which CAN kill you in just one second...
> the keys can be a huge problem. First, they are often hard to spot AND the devs often put them in obscure places. Then, all the keys look the same and it's not told which locked door requires which key. So, if you're not able to guess it, you won't know which of the locked doors the key you just found will unlock ; and also, it doesn't tell you when you do use a key, so if you found the key before the locked door, you won't even know you used the key
>and finally, while most levels are really good, a couple of them are very uninspired. also the last mansion level has some shitty hidden buttons.

The add-on to the first RR, Suckin' Grits on Route 66, was made by Sunstorm Interactive which made the best add-ons for all Build games (Caribbean Life and Duke It Out In DC for Duke , Cryptic Passage for Blood, Wanton Destruction for SW). It is a much more solid with constant quality all the way through, and it also tries to hide the flaws of the original game and does a good job at it. However, I still think the best levels of the first RR are in the original game.

but NOW; the sequel, Redneck Rampage Rides Again In Arkansas, is a fucking MASTERPIECE. All the issues of the first game are fixed (arguably except the keys but even then it's never near as bad as in the original), there are new (better) enemies, and most importantly the level design is brilliant from start to end. Between the swamp levels letting you drive that small boat, the levels letting you use the motorbike; and levels like the factory level which is some of the most detailed, greatest, level design ever made for Build....

Sadly, Rides Again In Arksansas has always been (still is) incredibly underrated. Even active members of Build engine games communities haven't played it, and sometimes don't know even it exists.
I think it suffered from the reputation of the first game. People played the first, and stopped there not knowing both the add-on and the sequel are better. Also, by the time it came out, everybody was either too busy still playing Duke3D, or on the other hand, playing Quake and not caring about Build engine games which, despite being more fun, were "technically inferior" and therefore not worth the time of Quakefags, too busy jerking off on the "REAL 3D".

I hope RR gets a sourceport at some point so more people can realize how good the sequel is.

Pic related, the factory level. Y-axis based level design with a smart mix of sector and sprite structures. Shading is a mix of the wall-shading of the engine, and shading directly applied on the textures.... These guys were great at working around the limits of the engine, no other pro Build games did things like this.

I'm not shitposting. It is truth that some people thought that way, once Quake came out some people immediatly called Duke and all other Build engine games 'shit' without even playing it, simply because they weren't "true 3D".

You can't deny this just like you can't deny SNES/Megadrive console wars. And, exactly like in the case of the SNES/MD war, the Quake vs Duke thing was a consequence of marketing (= marketing for Quake which said everywhere it could that the game was true 3D "UNLIKE SOME OTHER FPS")

I'm not trying to say this or that game is better. For all you know, I could very well say this, and still like Quake as a game, this has nothing to do with it. I'm just giving explanations on why Rides Again has always been overlooked. Are you trying to deny that a 2.5D FPS coming out in 1997 wouldn't be regarded as 'dated' due to Quake?

>This isn't /v/, there's no pointless competition to appear elite.
Tell that to Quakeniggers. They're easily the worst bunch on /vr/ by FAR, and I'm actually a fan of Quake. Quakeniggers have held onto that 'elitism' since 1996. It's sad.

No, you dumbass, that's a shitposting troll.

Sorry for calling you a dumbass, but I have to get the point across that a few shitposters do not ruin a board, especially if you TAKE THE APPROPRIATE ACTIONS when dealing with them.

I'll give you a hint. There are two steps to dealing with his kind. One of those steps is ignoring the poster (you know, not responding as you have done here). The other step must remain a secret because of reasons, but I think you know what to do.

And if you don't know what the other step is, do us all a favor and at least follow the "ignore" step. One out of two is better than zero out of two.

>> No.1799784

>>1799771
You know, on closer inspection, maybe the guy you were responding to didn't mean any ill will.

I am still largely against fanboy wars, though, so I'm still in no mood to try to villianize one side over the other.

Anyway, back to RR.

Suckin' Grits on Route 666 has some really beautiful levels. RR's hires textures are really good when you know what to do with them. You don't even need overcomplicated detailing or architecture for them to look good.

I like it. I played the first game and the sequel. Not sure if there are more. It has everything a hillbilly could ever dream of: moonshine, guns, chicken, inbred relatives, harleys, rockabilly music, ufos the list goes on.
The hit-scanning enemies can be a pain in the ass. It`s maybe not the best build fps, but I found it very enjoyable.

Still can't agree that this game plays well, even if the mapping and texture work are impressive. It's not bad if you're starved for old-school FPS shooting and exploration but I would never put it in a must-play list.

I could list a bunch of annoyances I have with the mechanics but the simplest way is to say that that the game really does feel like a cheap mod to me--impressive mapping aside.

Original game IIRC. IMO the tornado effect of RR is a lot better than the tornado effect of Shadow Warrior.
I also think the slot machines of RR, too, are better than SW's. I admit spending quite some time on them to win those 50HP items that go over the 100hp limit.

There is only one add-on, Suckin' Grits on Route 66. Rides Again In Arkansas is a sequel.
It's a common misconception for Rides Again, but that would be like saying Doom 2 or Mega Man 2,3,4,5,6 are add-ons.
It just shows how overlooked that game is considering people don't even think it's a game by itself.

Depends what you want to do exactly. For mapping you can find some tutorials
http://dukertcm.com/knowledge-base/downloads-rtcm/redneck-faqs-makemap/
http://jonhunt.com/redneck/

For modding, I'd assume it's similar to vanilla duke3D, that is to say sort of limited and will require you to come up with workarounds to do more advanced things (unlike modding for modern duke3D using eduke32), but i'm pretty clueless about modding really. You can always start by trying to fuck around with the game .con files.

Have you ever made a map with the Build engine? If not, any tutorial teaching you the basics will work (like this http://infosuite.duke4.net/index.php?page=basics ). The "base" map making for every Build engine game is the same. "only" effects making differ from game to game (which is a lot ; each Build game uses its own system).

The issue you'll have with redneck rampage is that it doesn't have a more modernized map editor like Duke3D has with mapster32. Mapster32 added tons of small very useful features which make map making easier and faster; but obviously, you can only make effects for Duke3D with it... But for the shadow warrior map I am making, I do use mapster32 for the environments, then constantly switch to SWP Build for effects. I was only able to do by using a workaround : I extracted the tilesXXX.art files of the game and the palette.dat from the grp to the root folder where the editor also is, which allows mapster32 to use them. You can probably do that for RR too if you find the old Build not convenient enough.

As for making new enemies is concerned, this is a pretty hard task. The vast majority of "new" enemies Duke3D mods are derived from the game or other games enemies (like for "new" Doom enemies). The easiest way to make new enemies would be like all these games did : create a model as a base, and take screenshots of it...

If you only want to take the game's enemies and other games enemies and give them new attacks, then this will be easier.

Good luck. There is no Redneck Rampage community to help you.
