Is it wrong to think that I want a straight remake of the two SF games, with art designed by the guy who is in charge of the Modern Shining Force Games?

>> No.1788482

>>1788461
No, but I think the current Shining team at SEGA needs to recognize and accept the Team Sonic/Camelot games first. They've somehow taken offense at the western Shining community for reasons mostly unknown to us, and I wouldn't be surprised if they're just as blatantly jealous as SEGA's executive board. Camelot's not going to work with SEGA again—not after how they dropped support during Episode III's development—so this issue's an impasse.

I don't like Tony Taka's art, honestly. Tamaki, though, now we're talking.

I've always been a fan of Hiroshi Kajiyama.
He did the art for CD, Final Conflict, and Wisdom, and even helped with Shining Force III (several different artists did the final portraits, and you can even see some inconsistency between promotions, but the main character designs are his):

You played the remake, which has an affection system of sorts for all characters. I think it took into account talking to them in the hq, always letting them fight with you, and not getting them killed. Whoever has the highest affection will say a few lines after the final battle. You probably got Narsha (who's a remake-only character) because you used her the most, likely due to her game-breaking nature. When I played through the remake, I got Domingo.

Gameplay wise, the system has been refined and updated. For example, you now have an item box to store things your characters aren't holding, Max gets a super Egress and an attack spell, stuff like that. It plays about the same.

There's a new, and optional, gimmick about using cards. A remake-only character equips character cards to copy your character's effects, clone them, or giving them extra turns. He can also copy effects from enemy cards. Needless to say he's totally game-breaking if used right. Other new characters include Narsha, seen on >>1805667, has great stats and a game-breaking spell set, too.

All in all it's easier than the old version, but that's where the star system comes in. When you beat the game, you get a save with a star on it, a new game + of sorts where the difficulty is ramped up a bit. The neat part is that you can stack stars by beating it over and over, so the game keeps getting harder and harder. I remember a guy who had 20+ stars, it made the enemies impossible but also buggy due to their extremely hard stats, he had to exploit these bugs to win.

The music is remixed from the original, and although muddled by the GBA's hardware it's quite good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Nn4Pou3ekA

The story is more cohesive. The original writer for Shining Force, Masaki Wachi, didn't work in any of the sequels (which is why they threw a bunch of retcons at the story), but he was brought back as scenario writer for the remake. The story is better explained and it's more sci-fi than before. You can also talk to all your characters to get to know them (part of the affection system mentioned on >>1796608), many of them explain more about the lore and backstory of the game.

The graphics are good, but the art style is different. It's very pastel, it feels like it's made on color pencils or something. The battle animations look weird sometimes. Dark Dragon in particular way worse in-game.

I doubt it. The guy currently in charge of the franchise for Sega has a vendetta against the old games. Not sure if you're familiar with the fiasco, but a couple of years ago he had YouTube shut down a bunch of channels that had Shining Force-related videos. And not just gameplay videos, but videos of people showing their collection of Shining games or just discussing the series.

I don't have the screenshots, but the guy went on a rant because fans kept asking him to make something more like the old games instead of the hack'n'slash garbage they've been doing since Shining Tears.

I only played the Genesis and GG ones. AFAIK, there is no permanent death, even having the MC die will warp you out of battle.
You can grind.
There is no weapon or magic triangle.
Enemy and player turns aren't separated in phases, instead units get their turn according to their speed stat.

All in all, Shining Force feels very simplified compared to other TRPGS. I still like them as they were my introduction to the genre, but you may find them too dull.

>> No.1825796

>>1825728

shining force is simpler, no permadeath, your weapons dont degrade and there is few abilities to units other then raw stats or magic, only enemies really have abilities and they are usually only simple things like resistance to magic or a special attack.

Caintaurs are quite literally dog furries. The word is a portmanteau of canine and centaur (which to the Japanese just means any human-animal cross. Draco Centaur over here is a good example of this quirk.)

So I'm a little ways into SF1. Just got to Chapter 3.

I'm having fun so far. The story seems to be non-existent, but that's okay I guess.

Gong is my favorite character. He can't really take many hits, but boy does he hit like a truck.

I'm curious as to how the leveling in this game works. Is it like FE where you get random stat increases with each level? And how much randomness is there? Because Gong just got 5 attack points on his previous level up.

Also, is it similar to FE in that archers are fucking useless?

>> No.1838959

Nah, Archers are solid in Shining Force in general. They only hit things 2 or 3 tiles away depending on their weapon, but since you have 12 peeps in the force it's more to beat on someone who is already surrounded or in unreachable locations.

And there is quite a bit of randomness in the level-ups. Characters have a 'forecast' which biases their level ups, but the SF1 algorithm is pretty whack at times, meaning you can get 5 or more on a level up. The growth is slow, but once you can promote people, the stat growth becomes much nicer. HP remains pretty shit for most of the game though when compared to Shining Force 2, which keeps mages quite deadly and criticals devastating.

I once had Tao gain +13 agility on a level up.

man SF3 sure does like to have silent protagonists Synbios toss around a lot ellipses.

The game is better when you pretend every time he says ..... he's really just sighing with put upon resignation. Like he doesn't even care anymore and is just going along with whatever

>> No.1839314

>>1839308
He speaks in the other two scenarios, so the ellipses are just a holdover from previous Shining games. Synbios doesn't have as much of a stake in the overall conflict as Medios and Julian, but he's still got a reason to defeat Domaric and, inevitably, Bulzome.

In the scenes which overlap between Sc. 1 and 2(like the confrontation with the Imperial soldiers in Saraband) Medion will talk in Sc. 1 while Synbios talks in Sc. 2.

It's pretty similair to how Golden Sun switched the silent protaganists between 1 and The Lost Age, but now with overlapping events.

So, I got a ways into SF1. Chapter 7.

I liked it at first, but I just ended up getting really frustrated. Seems like no matter how much defense I got, I was still taking huge chunks of damage and doing very little. And probably half of my attacks would just miss.

I even grinded my characters up to 20 and promoted them early in Chapter 6.

Fucking Mishaela was almost impossible because I just couldn't do enough damage to her since most of my attacks would miss. I had to egress a whole bunch to grind my way up a bit just to kill her.

And to top it off, the UI is fucking abysmal. Comparing units stats is a damn chore.

I'm giving the GBA remake a shot before I go to SF2.
