Will there ever be a racing game as good as this?

I'm inclined to say yes- F-Zero X was as good or better. And if we're talking not-retro, F-Zero GX and Mariokart Double Dash!! are at least as good.

Fire Mountain Rally best course.

What qualities make it the top-notch racing game?

Fast and tight gameplay, tons of unlockable characters, upgradeable vehicles, nice track design with lots of branching paths, solid soundtrack (obviously). Just a generally good use of an IP that everyone hates, it felt more like star wars than the Phantom Menace did.

It's a solid 9/10 racer but I agree with the other anon that F-Zero X was a bit better, at least more fun for me.

That makes sense. The upgrade-ability is a really cool aspect of the game.

I'm drawing a blank because I1m drunk, but I feel like there is another retro racer that does that. Maybe I'm wrong, but it is a great feature.

Does anyone have a favorite pod? I 'main' Ebe Endecott

A downside of E1 Racer, as least this is how I felt when I played it, is that once you start unlocking good ships/upgrades, you can outspeed most of the competition without racing very clean laps. I was winning most races on my first or second try. Abyss is pretty much the only really challenging course, and that's all about not falling off in those two sections.

I would LOVE to see another racer game in this style that emphasizes thread-the-needle shortcuts, branching routes, and changing track hazards. I had a ton of fun playing this game but it didn't make me want to keep coming back to test my skills.

Back when I played this, I'm pretty sure I used Bullseye Navior almost exclusively.

I was lucky this game was so great, I'm glad I impulse bought it during the time Episode 1 was airing in theaters. The pod racing part was the best thing about that movie.
A shame I traded it for a copy of Star Fox 64 once.

When it comes to racing games though, I still like DKR and F-Zero X better.

Not a big fan of futuristic racing games, so I'll go with Gran Turismo 2 for the title of best racing game.

That track pissed me off.

>only have n64 controllers with worn out analog sticks
>never realize that the game doesn't work well with them
>watch a video of the game a few weeks ago
>realize I've beaten the game three times with only half of the steering ability you're supposed to have

Now I know why the game always felt like such a pain in the ass to play.
