Rebel Assault II was fun though, I played it on PS1. Wouldn't call it the best SW game though, the shooting stages were bland, and in many ways Shadows of the Empire did the flight combat better.
But, much like Shadows, Rebel Assault II provided variety in levels so it was never tedious to play.

The best games in the franchise is a toss up between Jedi Knight Dark Forces II, Rogue Squadron II, and Star Wars Episode 1 Racer. It really just depends on what genre you enjoy the most as one is more FPS, one is "SPACE BATTLE" and the other is a racing game.

I replayed it recently and the first level (battle of hoth) still holds up IMO. The 3rd person action levels, which are the majority, have stiff controls, but the level design and atmosphere is still solid.
It was a good nostalgia trip, and as many have said, the game encaptures well that classic Star Wars feeling that I never felt in newer games or Star Wars products from the new millenium.

It was a toggleable option.

As for SOTE, it's very good in terms of atmosphere and getting the Star Wars "feel", but in terms of gameplay it's very mediocre. The controls and movement are clunky, the combat isn't particularly exhilarating, and the bossfights often degenerate into tedious circle strafe matches (excepting the Giant Dianoga, which remains an interesting and terrifying fight).

I will say though, it's still very memorable, if not for how varied the actual gameplay was, between being on foot, riding a swoop bike, flying a speeder or operating the guns on the Outrider. I'm also thankful the developers gave you a jetpack for half the ground levels, since while it may have been awkward to use, it was still pretty damned fun.

On a side note, I actually replayed the game a few years ago, and something really odd happened. I recall, in my childhood, being really saddened that Dash bites it in the final battle. (when I was like 9 or so I even made a little badly drawn comic fanfiction thing about how he escaped the Skyhook's explosion. I might still have it somewhere...) Now, I'm not sure what causes it, maybe something to do with how many of those silver Rebel tokens you pick up, or maybe it was because I never got a game over in the whole playthrough, but after beating the final level I got a sooper sekrit ending that shows Dash and Leebo escape into hyperspace, with Dash remarking that with the Empire (and the Rebels) believing him dead, he'll have an easy time staying alive. It was really surreal to see the "real" ending so many years later, and to learn that poor old Dash Rendar was actually alive.

I can taste the nostalgia in this game. For a year or two my only games were Mario 64 and this. Loved that Tatooine level. Starts with some sloppy platforming across caverns, shooting the occasional stormtrooper. Avoiding the Wampa, jumping for those special silver doodads. Then you approach a big empire structure and open those massive doors. You ascend the big building, shooting your way through ugly empty rooms, then reach the top to find the jetpack. I loved that jetpack. You hover across the chasm and reach another building only to face of against an at-st. Then it's time to face Boba Fett. All in all a rather long stage.

>> No.1665512

I think you gotta look at it from a mid-90s perspective.
Back then this game was absolutely amazing.

Very varied gameplay in a single game, from 3rd person shooter / platformer over the Hoth sequences and space battles to the speeder bike racing. This game had all that you could have wanted from a Star Wars game back then.

The jetpack was something that was rarely seen in games yet and the boss fights were really intense and memorable.

On top you got the classic SW feel, a great soundtrack and great atmosphere.

The controls feel crude now but they didn't back then (except for the speed bike racing).
It was a great game for the 90s and it still holds up well enough today.

Gotta agree with this post.
At the time, the controls didn't feel as bad as they do know, simply because we didn't knew that much better in terms of 3D games with 3rd person perspective. There was Mario 64 (which had much better gameplay, but then again, totally different kind of game), Tomb Raider... and yeah, not much else.
I do remember getting frustrated with the controls sometimes, but it still felt awesome to be playing that in 1996. And thanks to the plot, atmosphere and music, the game is still fondly remembered by many people here too, I see.

>>1665316
>The Kotor games are mediocre dungeon crawlers that don't really feel like Star Wars.
>It's more like generic space opera with magic and light sabers.

These KOTOR games are from a time I wasn't playing that many modern games anymore, and while I went to the theatre to see all 3 prequel movies (as I did with the original trilogy too back when they re-released them on cinema in 1995), my interest in Star Wars just wasn't as big as it was back when I was a kid.
I just see KOTOR always being regarded as the "best SW games ever" by many people on /v/.. but when I checked some footage it seemed very generic, didn't get any urge to play them to be honest.
I honestly don't know which game would be my "favorite" of the Star Wars games, in fact, Racer might be, gameplay-wise, I thought it was a very original and awesome racing game that could rival the likes of F-Zero or Wipeout, while still being its own thing. Then again, Episode 1 is my least liked SW movie, but that game was awesome on its own, movie or not.
and Super Star Wars ESB for SNES was awesome too, albeit too hard.

Also, surprised nobody mentioned Star Wars Arcade yet.

Thanks to this thread I went back to try and finish this game once and for all. When I was a kid, I could only get to the 5th level where you get the jet pack but gave up before even reaching Boba Fett. Some years back, I got this game again when I started rebuilding my N64 collection, got to the sewers and abandoned it.
Now I finally beat that horrible tentacle boss, and am now in Xizor's palace. I can defeat the gladiator boss's first form by spamming seeker rockets, but his second hoovering form wreck my shit in no time. Still trying to figure out how to dodge his own seeker rockets.

Anyway, game controls are clunky and the aiming is not very precise, but all in all, I'm having fun with the game, level design is solid and using the jetpack is very helpful.

Anyone ever got all these challenge points? I just checked and I got 0 of them on the bike level, that shit is impossible.
I only got 6 out of the 9 on the sewer... I looked around but I could only find 6 of them.

I've tried 10 times or so already, I can breeze through the level in 15 minutes and can reach the boss with 100% health, haha... but still, he takes all my 4 lives very easily.
I might watch a video to see how other people beat him, I feel my main problem is not what weapons do I use (I do save all 4 disruptors for his final form), but that I can't dodge his attacks, also his telegraph is kind of weird, or rather non-existant, I don't know which weapon he's going to use next, and he barely gives me time to react... anyway, gotta keep trying, but I'm taking a rest for now or I'll get burned out from playing the same segments so many times, kinda wish it had a save point right before the boss.

Please help me /vr/. I have been trying to get TIE Fighter to run all fucking night, and morning now, with no satisfactory results. I got the game from
http://thepiratebay.se/torrent/6060495/Star_Wars_XWing_Trilogy__TIE_Fighter_Collectors_CD_ISO_Win7_%5BTuz
which boasts how it works in Windows 7. Has all the patches and such, et cetera. Well, it runs, after you put yourself in Windows 95 compatibility mode, but there are many graphical glitches. The entire space is yellow. I tried .bat files to kill explorer.exe and I later manually killed explorer.exe, and this fixed the graphical glitches, but now the game crashes when you try to get into a mission or a tutorial. Then I tried opening resolution tab, nothing. I tried enabling all the compatibility mode options, nothing. I tried the directdraw hack, and the game crashes on startup. I tried disabling display adapter and the executable refuses to run. I have tried googling for general answers, and specific, to no prevail though admittedly my googlefu is weak. I also cannot manage to get windowed mode working with it, but would love to try if some anon could tell me how to do so without alt enter, as it doesn't work with this game. I am going to reinstall the game, as I think I might have just fucked it up, but in the mean time am going to drop this post before I kill myself just in case someone has the solution to my problems.

So, uninstalling and retrying worked like a charm. Never ever run the game directly through TIE95.exe. Always use the launcher TIESTART.exe. Set both TIESTART.exe and TIE95.exe in compatibility mode to Windows 95, nothing else. Kill explorer WITHOUT setting it to start back up after an application closes, as you NEED to run TIESTART.exe first, and it will automatically close before TIE95.exe runs, therefore explorer.exe WILL reopen immediately afterwords aswell, making it pointless. It should run, though I haven't done a real in depth test. Just did the tutorial. Have an important question though, as I am new to the game.

No way. Also the guys I see on youtube can't beat him without losing at least 5, 6 lives.. and I only have 4. I also don't have the flame ammo, and I only have 4 disruptors.... I think I'm kinda forced to start the game from the beginning and try to save as many disruptors and lives for this guy alone, damn. Also, I'm playing on medium difficulty.

Any tips will be welcome, I'd really like to finish this game.
I keep trying but seriously his second form keeps fucking me over, I still don't know how to dodge his missiles, and youtube videos aren't helping either, guys just tank him because they have over 30 lives so they don't care about dying.

Samefagging again. I recently replayed the entire game a few days ago, in only two sessions (it's not a particularly long game, took me only about 4 - 5 hours total), and I guess I'll have to partially rescind what I said earlier about the bosses being terrible.

The IG-88 bossfight is actually very well-done. The droid is equipped with some rapid-fire lasers and pulse-weapons for when you get close up, and if you stay out in the open too long, you're toast. This, coupled with the mess of an area you have to fight him in, as well as the constant whirring and clicking of his gears and servos, means you have to be constantly on the move, and it's always a huge shock when you peak around the corner, expecting to pop a few shots at him, only to hear his mechanical walking noises and realize he's actually turning the corner right behind you.

The Boba Fett fight is also pretty frantic, since it has you constantly on the move as well, but given the verticality of the environment you are in, as well as the jetpack both you and Fett are equipped with, it makes the fight feel entirely different from IG-88. My main problem with the fight, however, is the second-half. After you blast Fett, he returns to his hangar, only to emerge in his ship, the Slave-1. The bossfight then degenerates into a boring circlestrafe contest in which you have to nail the ship in the back to hurt it (annoyingly, there's no indication this is its only weakness; firing at the front of the ship will have all your projectiles pass right through the geometry, which made me at first believe the game was glitched).

(continued)

There is also the Giant Diagona fight, which is easily the most unsettling part in the game, given the underwater environment, the need to occasionally re-emerge from the water for air, the mess of tentacles constantly trying to slam into you, and the fact that the Dianoga's only weakness, it's eye, looks very similar to its tentacles, and so must be hunted around for while trying to dodge its attacks.

The Gladiator is effectively the game's final boss, and while it's not quite as memorable as IG-88 or the Dianoga, it's a good fight if not for how it is effectively the climax for all ground battles in the game. It is very heavily armored in all its forms, and possesses some extreme firepower (I frequently got killed by its barrage of seekers and its tracking eye-laser). However, if you're smart, you can stockpile special weapons from throughout the game for this fight (the game is especially generous with the amount of seekers it gives you), and it's extremely satisfying launching a disruptor blast at its final form, and seeing the boss vaporized for good.

The game has a definite low-point, though, in the form of the Loader Droid bossfight, and arguably the entire Freighter level that it takes place in. The boss is just a borish circlestrafe match, as it has only a single attack (moving up close to the player, and then trying to launch its grapples at you), and so the entire battle will just involve constantly moving around the boss and jumping to avoid its attacks. It's a little frantic, but completely repetitive, and the fact that the entire level that preceded it was a massive corridor shooter does not help this fact at all.
