Ok, /vr/ let's discuss this fucker.
I have watched all his nerd videos and also his out of character videos. I have determined the following facts about James Rolfe.

+ He uses cheat codes and continues and still regard his "success" a feat
+ Very limited to NES games
+ Never plays for score or completeness

Conclusion: He is a casual and most likely a poser.

Your take on this?

What is wrong with using cheat codes? Especially if you are making a video about a game and you have a limited amount of time, there really is no purpose in retrying the same area over and over just to get footage from a later area. Which is what his reason for using cheats is anyways. That's fine to me. Using savestates and emulator to do the same thing feels more scummy, at least he actually records legitimate play.

Also NES is his favourite but he has lots of games. I see no issue with having a favourite system.

Finally, playing for score is something that very few "hardcore" players actually do, especially in games where score has no purpose whatsoever than bragging rights.

He is more of a collector than a player, and much of his Angry Nerd persona is for performance rather than strict informational purposes.

However, his boon to the retro gaming scene is that he is a great filmmaker. He genuinely strives to make high-quality videos... as opposed to utterly crappy webcam rants from mouth-breathing neckbeards who say "um" every other second and wonder why they are not as famous as AVGN.

Fact: Retro gaming is as big of a deal as it is largely thanks to James' efforts.

Is he perfect? No. But he is skilled, he is popular, and sometimes that is enough.

I'm pretty sure he is very much a real gamer. It's true that he probably has a greater interest in films and filmmaking than video games, but that doesn't minimize the fact that he has a ton of experience and owns a ton of games. This stuff was legitimately his childhood and he's not faking it. The only thing is he used to fake playing badly earlier on to make videos entertaining, whereas later he "got better" and really gives a more real, honest take on things.

Anyway, not having much skill doesn't make someone a casual. Someone with experience is probably going to shit on an inexperienced gamer even if he's awful for the amount of experience he has. And James is really not bad at games at all. I wouldn't say Game Grumps are casuals either and they generally perform very poorly in almost every game considering they've been playing games presumably their whole lives.

Mike is pretty good at games. Either that, or he only plays games he's good at. Hard to tell. Anyone can look incredibly good at games if they just pick games they've played a while, but give them something new and they'll be terrible beyond belief. Whatever the case, he's clearly gotten good at a number of things. And he's an artist, too. Just can't be entertaining on camera for shit.

I think James only continued to do Nerd episodes only for the fans or pay. He does enjoy games, but its pretty obvious he's real passion is with films and he never intended his AVGN stuff to take off. He's far from a casual, though.

Am I seriously the only person on this board who DOESN'T watch camwhores trying to get famous on Youtube trying to tell me shit I've already known for twenty years?

When I watch a gameplay video on Youtube it's always because I want to take a look at a newer orobscure game I'm thinking about getting. I always pick the longest one there is and click around to random moments to get a general feeling of the game and on the rare occasion that I have the volume up AND the gameplay is actually narrated, the guy's always about as charismatic as a half retarded 14 year old and that's how I like it.

Back when he started making this AVGN stuff for fun for his friends (like 10 years ago?), retro gaming wasn't "in" with younger people to the extent it is now. He just did it because he really liked it.

Similarly, he could easily review modern movies like everyone else does, but he enjoys shitty things no one cares about more so he talks about those even if it won't get him anywhere near as big of an audience.

He's really a pretty genuine dude in a sea of people trying to fit in and do what's hip to direct attention to themselves. The accomplishment IS the review. The accomplishment IS the video. That's the endpoint. I think what happened to the AVGN is a tragedy and a blessing.

All we can know for certain is people who monetize their Youtube videos tend to make a minimum of about $2 per 1,000 views. On the high end, it may be $5 or more. I just did the math on his most recent videos (dating about 4 months back) and that equals about $24,000-61,000 in that time from Youtube videos alone (from this recent ~4 month period), not counting other stuff.

But there are many factors here. Is he paying for both his own wellbeing as well as his wife's, or does she have a job too? How much is spent on the kid? How much other money is coming in? Is he even monetizing his videos in the first place? Does he have another job? What if he has serious medical conditions or has to take care of other things, like debt? We can never truly know how well he's doing with such little information. However, being that he hasn't sold off his collection or moved, we can almost certainly assume he's getting by at the very least.

I don't think it would be outlandish to assume he's made hundreds of thousands of dollars from the AVGN thing. It's very possible. But that's just my assessment.

My biggest gripe with video game "reviewers" is that most of them are really just doing it out of hope for fame and money. Ever since the Youtube videogame boom, everyone has been trying to get in on that and it takes talent and just plain being in the right place at the right time. JonTron got lucky by having someone (Probably himself) post on reddit and have a ton of people watching his show and it just snowballs.
Thats really one of the only ways you can get youtube famous by making videos about games.
It reall dissapoints me because most of the reviewers are so quick to jump on the train when the train left the station long ago, so they have half assed videos on a pirated version of Sony Vegas they hardly know how to use and they wonder why their video only gets 14 views.
Also the channels that solely exist to just merchandize. Game Grumps pisses me off now because it's literally a giant moneypot that people keep dumping cash into because they want the newest shit with their favorite youtube celebrities on it and now they are in with "Polaris" which is pretty much a bunch of cunts shitting up nerd culture and trying to come up with the next big thing to monetize.
I wanted to make videos but I realized I didnt have the time and I wasn't willing to put in the effort to learn how to properly use editing software. On top of that I can't think of anything that would set me apart from the rest so I'd most likely sit in the trenches with the other "Video Game Channels"

I know they're completely different things but still. ROMS are the fleshlights of games. You have more things to do to get them working. Sure there's more options (in this case filters would be different textures on the inside of the fleshlight) but in the end when you have the physical copy (girl) playing it is way easier (getting pussy).

James seems like a cool enough guy who works hard at providing free entertainment to a infinite amount of people. I'd be an asshole to hate him. I'm about the same age as him and can directly relate to a lot of what he talks about in his shows. I don't think he's really that comfortable in front of the camera other than when he's doing a character directed by James. Hence the really shitty videos starring him.

He's decent when it's him and James just playing games, but goddamn is it terrible when he tries to do videos on his own. Videos where he and James do things casually (like the quiz books) are fine, but he really should not review things on his own. The Klonoa video was an exception as it was actually decent, the other things he's done are pretty much terrible. Displays of gaming skills sure, he's got some of that, but his reviewing "comedy" is just plain shit.

If anything, Mike should probably really help James beat games, since that seems to be his strong point (being good, almost great at 8-bit and 16-bit platformers).

I am looking for an old game from my childhood. I don't remember the name of it but I can remember the main characters and the basic plot of the story. You could choose between two main characters. The first was a young girl with long red pig-tails. She wore a purple outfit and used two large golden rings as her weapons. She would also use these rings to cast spells. The other main character was a boy with gray hair who could shape shift into animal forms and the could take the shapes of the enemies you had to fight. He wore a brown outfit with shorts. I don't think this game was produced in America but it did have subtitles in English. No matter which character you chose, the other character was still a part of the story. It took place in a small river town and I re-call most of the missions took place in the jungle and various jungle like settings. The endgame mission involved some sort of floating structure (I don't remember how it was relevant to the game). I remember the start of the game had something to do with a princess needing help but I don't remember enough to elaborate. If you guys could help me out I would really appreciate it. Thanks <3.

I think it's to give an illusion of spontaneity. I remember seeing a video of sxephil before he edited it, he would deliver a line, then pause and think. You cut all that out and it looks and sounds more like a stream of consciousness kind of thing.

So really, if you just film one long bit of you delivering individual lines and cut out the parts inbetween, it probably ends up being less work than actually writing, memorizing and delivering an entire script perfectly.

I think the biggest problem is that he's just not very technically-inclined. Some day he needs to sit down and read a few books about graphic design, special effects, etc. Comic Sans, After Effects plug-in explosions, and freesfx_gunshot.wav probably seem fine to him in the same way those Microsoft Word template church flyers seem fine to old people, but James could really do with some extra knowledge if he wants to be a successful filmmaker.

I like him a lot. I like effort, I like creativity. He also seems like a very nice guy. He does so much work for his videos that you at least got to appreciate that. I really felt happy for him after seeing the Done shooting video.

Even if you don't like the content, you should always appreciate the effort people put in things. I don't like lady gaga's music very much, but I can respect her for writing her own stuff, even playing it on instruments and being at least somewhat creative. So in a weird way I kinda like her.
