>Where to buy
Aliexpress, gogamegeek, litnxt, keepretro, mechdiy, Anbernic/Retroid official websites

>Best Brands
Retroid (Well built, powerful, but $100-200 range), Anbernic (Balanced price, power and build quality, avoid the RG Nano), Powkiddy (Cheap, low quality builds, interesting shapes), Miyoo (One hit wonder), TrimUI: (Good build quality, shitty software, good price).

>What do I buy
Post your preferences: Money (20$ - 300$), Shape (horizontal, vertical, clamshell, square), Pocketable or not, OS (Linux, Android, Both), Systems (Pre PSX is 8, 16, and 32-bit eras, PSX with extras, Dreamcast and N64, PSP and DS, PS2 and GC/Wii capable)

>Recommended devices
Prices depend on when and where you buy.
- Retroid Pocket 4 (200$, horizontal, 4.7" 16:9 Screen, up to PS2/GC, android)
- RG556 (180$, horizontal, 5.8" 16:9 OLED Screen, up to PS2/GC, android)
- Retroid Pocket 2S (100$, horizontal, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, can play some PS2/GC, android, pocketable)
- Powkiddy RGB30/RGB20SX (90$, horizontal, 4" 1:1 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)
- Trimui Smart Pro (60$, horizontal, 5" 16:9 Screen, PSX with extras, linux)
- Anbernic RG 35XX Plus (60$, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)
- Miyoo mini plus (60$, 3.5" 4:3 Screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)
- R36S (50$, vertical, 4:3 screen, PSX with extras, linux, pocketable)

>Things I need to know
- Handhelds come with low quality SD cards. Back them up, throw them away, buy new ones.
- It takes some tinkering, specially linux devices. You better have bare basic desktop knowledge on how to unzip files and put them in folders. We are not here to teach you how.
- Overall quality of these products is very cheap.
- Reviewers get free handhelds, caveat emptor.

Top discussions include the Odin 2 Mini fucking up the d-pad placement entirely making it a piece of shit poorman's Vita, and how the Anbernic RG35XX SP battery is a ticking timebomb with how it's exposed to the main chip. After all of these months/a year of waiting for these clamshell SP clones they're all cancelled/flawed.

I'm sure it'd be the easiest "mod"/fix to just put some heat absorbing material in that huge fucking empty space, they likely only have that huge gap because they were lazy with their solution for how the battery would attach to the PCB, going with a cable instead of a proper soldered strip that a normal phone battery would just click into/against. Still concerning though, and we have no idea how long the hinges will last with time. Give it four months or so before buying one yourself to let other people test them out and give their unpaid opinions.

Using the battery as a heatsink has never been good practice, explicitly because it increases strain on the cell and can lead to premature failure. Just because it hasn't happened within the first 2 days of release doesn't mean there's no cause for concern.

Yes, it is native and was exclusive to ambassadors, but you could make your own ROM injects for years. The problem with that was that the brightness is stuck on some medium setting and there is no way to extract the saves, plus you have to make a separate fucking inject for each game.
open_agb_firm on the other hand allows you to pick from a list of roms, you can access your save files, adjust the brightness during play, and you can use a border when in 1:1 scaling mode

Because "The early days of DS emulation" was fucking flash carts like the R4 and CycloDS, and outside of sometimes having too-simple UIs for the cards, the games ran fucking flawlessly unless you had a shitty ROM file. DS emulation always ran great on PCs outside of new DS releases requiring a few hours/a day or two to be unlocked and pirateable whether that meant patching and releasing a patched ROM or releasing a firmware update for your flash cart.
If you mean DS emulation on chinkhelds, what the absolute fuck does that have to do with anything because emulating PSP on chinkhelds had ALWAYS been a larger struggle than emulating DS ever fucking was.

So... does anyone here have any experience with using tablets as a handheld, with a controller to essentially make it into a Steam Deck or Switch? This looks like an interesting setup, especially as it can be used for multiple things due to the form factor, connect it to the TV and it's a console, go for the controller and it's a handheld, kind of... is this as good in practice as it sounds in theory?

I'm interested in getting a tablet to draw digital and stuff like that, since it's my main hobby apart from video games, so having it double as a sort of handheld with a big screen would be a bonus.

RGB30?
So I posted last thread about how I hate the battery issues on my RGB30.
If your battery has dropped to 0% suddenly, arrived at 0% then you wanna do a battery pull. Open it up, disconnect the battery, turn it on, shutdown, plug it back in etc and it should charge. My battery arrived at 0% dead but turned on and charge to 100/99%, I then attempted to cycle it 5 times at 30-80% but it'd cut out at 40ish. Sometimes it'll work absolutely fine, won't get the sudden voltage drop, sometimes it won't.

So how it presents itself besides instantly dropping voltage/shutting off is it gets stuck at 30-40% charge regularly, I tested it with one of my smart plugs that measures power draw and it'll just say it's charging, light up, draw enough power for the device but drop voltage and not charge the battery. Gotta open it up, yank the battery and cycle again. If you were to leave it for say 3-4h on charge it wouldn't do anything.
Sucks to suck.

Just saying clamshells aren't all they you remember them being, especially nowadays with most screens being resilient AND requiring touch. Having to flip open a device is a bigger hassle than just pressing a power button with your thumb, it really fucking is. The clamshell design just creates more potential failures and at least one extra step when wanting to use it, which gets tedious with time.

Neither, game link cable GBA can't be done on Linux chinkhelds, only GBC - and I don't think the current H700 firmwares have it as a babbyfied menu like JELOS or OnionOS yet, you'd need to manually input IPs on RetroArch to link up.

I kinda feel this way but not just with clamshells but verticals. It's not the screen flipping thing, I think it works on the SP and the DS but not the 3DS.
However definitely the ergonomics/shape don't hold up to grown up hands with injuries etc. When you played pokemon ruby or boktai or link to the past on your GBA SP you were playing it because either you didn't have an OG GBA or you were using it because it had a light built in.

The ergonomics on the original GBA hold up way better. The ergonomics issue cancels out any nostalgia I have.
If I wanted to be peak redditor and collect them on a shelf and never play 'em, I guess these sorts of devices would be my thing, but good screen/ergos matter more for playing games; at least for me.

If these companies had the capacity to make custom screens you'd be seeing full on systems dedicated to devices and you'd be seeing 4:3 screens above 4".
I think I've said it before but aside from old, old mid-00's tier GPS systems, the largest 4:3 screen I've seen on a mass produced device was my smart meter's energy monitor and that shit was definitely salvage scrap like a chinkheld.

Even before the wanking talk radio charity pranking smoking puking meganights where I couldn't go to my friends house and moments where I wasn't thinking about James' sister I had a power supply for my gameboy and I was playing Pokemon blue and SaGa and Tetris.

NTA and I agree with you that the PSP had some really good games that weren't ports and remakes.
but by god, the thing is like the vita, the ports, remakes and indies are some of the best shit on that console, god they're so fucking good.
Until the Japanese finally got the message and ported their games to PC N1S had held the definitive version of Disgaea 2 on the PSP and Vita and by god it may be the best, most bang for your buck game on the system. Thankfully you can now donate your soul directly to the void by playing it on PC but before then it was a handheld only affair unless you were willing to forgo the extras and play it on your modded PS2 or phat PS3.
The system was an RPG & puzzler beast but beyond the RPGs there were fucking 10/10 solid ports. Portable Gitaroo Man might be one of the finest things humanity has crafted

That's not to downplay the original PSP games, there were some real bangers especially if you're not an EOP.
Hell, I'll go out ragging on Tabata for being a mobile game dev as a joke but he did his best work on that system desu. You remember Phoenix Wright? Ace Attorney? Fuck that gay shit, throw me over a UMD or Harvey Birdman. Metal Gear Acid 1 & 2 are fine card games, I know portable ops & PW get wanked off enough but god was acid good. WKC:O is a great game too and who can forget about VC2, 3 & ZHP and the prinny games.

>I had one of these. It sucked.
The connection wasn't great, having a power suppy at the bottom always sucks for handheld devices if not angled so you'd occasionally disconnect and lose progress.
It was worse to use in practice than a gameboy power supply since you had to remove the batteries to use it so if it disconnected/cut out you were SoL.
>Worse battery life than a pair of normal AA's, even at the time.
>Modern rechargeables would embarass this thing
NICAD AA's?
This didn't have a battery anon, third party ones might have had one and I'm sure there were but NICAD wasn't THAT bad, sure NIMH is great and modern NIMH like eneloop are top tier even though you'll have a battery low/dim LED compared to alkaline but NICAD could get the job done if charged right.
The huge issue with NICAD is you need to discharge the batteries fully before charging so even though your device may cut out they'd spend an hour or two in the charger on a discharge cycle before you could slowly charge them up. Also unlike eneloops NICAD were garbage when it came to voltage drop off and self discharge so you couldn't buy your way out of the problem with having lots of cells since they'd also discharge over time.

I still don't know what the fuck Nintendo were thinking when they removed the power supply port on the GBA, the money saved on not adding it vs profit from selling their shitty AC/DC kit couldn't have been worth it.
Thankfully the SP solved that issue.
Also chinkheld companies still continue to place charging ports on the bottom of device rather than out of the way on the side or top of the device. It's a solved issue and still they put it in the wrong place. This is truly a crime greater than "incorrect" DPAD placement!

>How shitty is the Trimui Smart Pro at DS games?
I'll admit I haven't really used mine for DS other than checking at a glance so I could play SJ/EO, I mostly PSP, other handhelds & SNES/PSX.
It used to use standalone drastic like others but I decided to not use it since it uses bilinear filtering and I couldn't be fucked figuring out how to get a build that didn't have it (not in the options/config menu when I checked).
I'd say look up a review for any issues and then shoot your choice from there, I also recall some issues with mic stuff but that could be a fever dream from all the other drastic type devices and the TSP doesn't have a mic (and doesn't support mics via 3.5mm jack iirc).
If you have a specific game in mind, I'll see if I can give it a bash, not doing much atm other than waiting for PF in a game.

>The batteries on these things aren't always great anyway.
I got completely distracted and accidentally deleted the next part but I can expand I guess for inane battery rambling.
With Lithium style batteries you don't want to discharge a battery fully, you want to charge at around 20-30% to 80-90% 99% is fine too but don't keep it at peak voltage..
While new batteries are rated to keep x% of capacity over Y cycles the stress is lesser if you charge it properly and maintain good care, making sure to charge to 100% about once a month or more if in regular use or every few months if stashed in a drawer.
You can almost certainly replace the battery, but aim to not discharge it fully, that kinda mistreatment will lead to the classic battery boom bulge like my N3DS has that thing has had years of abuse of discharging to 0% and is bulging bad.
Despite all the shit talk about the SP and its heatsink battery, there's nothing inherently wrong with a battery getting warm while charging/discharging at a high current so long as it can cool appropriately (fast charging is generally ok so long as the battery can cool and is taken off charge ASAP).

Mind you, you won't know the quality of the battery you're getting anyway, your battery could have been reconditioned trash and was on its way out with a bit of additional stress pushing it over the edge.
For the record I also had a very abused iphone with a dead battery that cannot hold a charge similar to yours that was plugged in 24/7, discharged frequently and was so bloated it managed to warp the case.

If you're the type of person to run a device down to 0% and charge it overnight, being used as a heatsink won't change much for ya.

It's actually quite the complete opposite. It was an oversight that they VERY quickly tried to fix, including offering free repairs to anyone who had ANY issue with the DSlites even if it wasn't a cracked hinge.

And then Nintendo discovered that systematically, most people would just go out and buy a new DSlite because customers didn't want to wait to mail their unit away, have it fixed/replaced, and mailed back. They wanted to keep playing NOW. Despite Nintendo's efforts to pay from their own pockets to remedy the issue, they found tons of people just ended up buying twice as many consoles.

Clamshells are the best form, they allow full control and maximum power.
>Largest screen to size ratio.
>Full lower section real estate dedicated to ergonomics and extra controls.
>Lid protects screen and controls while being smooth, yet armored in pocket/bag.
>Allows fully adjustable viewing angles from any grip position. In hand, on lap, or on a table set down. Which is better for the neck.
>A good clamshell is it's OWN dock, with all necessary ports built in. So paying extra for a dock becomes a question of intelligence.
>It's quite literally the White man's handheld, associated with success.
>It filters incompetent engineers with it's hinge, allowing the cream to rise to the top.

Sadly no.
There's not many games in the N64 library I want to play since I am an RPG simp and the N64 only has games for toddlers u.u
I downloaded waverace64 and starfox and gave 'em a quick go for ya and it was pretty grim, WR64 was around 15fps~ @ 640x480 on mupen with HLE at 1.4ghz as set by trimui. Again, I am an N64 noob, it has no games I want to play so idk if this config was right or there was an optimisation I missed.
Starfox was gay as fuck with mandatory gaycoded dialogue preceeding any gameplay. It dropped a few fromes for <3s but was at 30fps otherwise, I quit when I heard do a barrel roll and put my device down out of shame.

I will shill the TSP everyday but ehhhhhhhhh idk, might be rough for some N64 depending on your game. Might have to search up individual ones.
If N64's make or break or waverace is your jam then godspeed, I've had no real huge issues with PSP/PSX with the types of games I play but I'm not your ideal tester.
Hopefully another kind TSP anon or N64 enthusiast can help more.

To be entirely honest, Anbernic is infamous for deliberately making one flaw so your system eventually fails and needs replacing. Chinese planned obsolescence. Anbernic has been the only major chinkheld producer to be found guilty of deliberately sabotaging their own shit so customers have to keep buying more/the next new thing but I wouldn't be surprised if others were doing it too. They want their products to die after a certain amount of time so you think you have to buy a new one. It's the entire ecosystem surrounding the "R4" where they have annual cards for $5 but they have a suicide script that requires removing otherwise the card bricks itself once it reads past a certain date on the DS/3DS.

Smearing vegetable oil on the buttons actually decreases latency by improving the ability of the connectors to transmit electrical signals faster. It's a lot like how vegetable oil transmits heat to food when you pour it on an electric induction range and turn it on.

Well I bought my first chink handheld last summer, went cheap to test the waters.
Got the MM+ but one button was defective and returned it. Some people where complaining about screen issues then and I went for the RG35XX after that, 42 bucks on sale with carrying case and 64GB card, not bad.
I installed Garlic OS and downloaded some games, everything ran perfectly. Not a big fan of the shoulder buttons but I mostly played GB games.
I realized an horizontal handheld would be more comfortable and short of forgot about it for a while. Picked it up recently to play SNES RPGs, and also checked some reviews on newer handhelds.
Not a single one is without flaw, and I don't think they will ever be. These things are not getting any new games, so they need to find a way to sell you systems, and that's it.
Also the shit Anbernic pulls releasing flawed systems non stop is just too much for me.
So, I decided that the only way to win this game is not to play. I'm not buying any more shit.
Thanks for reading my blog.
