My only gripe with the game is that, despite what the box says, the "campaing" is only 1 player, super star and Dreamlad 3 were 2 players, and Goemon's great adventure on N64 had 2 players and was in 3d, so why not Kirby 64?.
I really like above the clouds. Good reendition of butter building

It's impressive how many unique assets the game has, every single level looks different and even has unique setpieces in it. You look at something like NSMB and how shameless it is at recycling material and you gain new appreciation for the effort that went into this game.

I hated it when I rented it back when it came out. I thought it was completely devoid of the soul that was in Kirby’s Super Star and Kirby’s Adventure. And the no co op/partner mechanic was such a letdown.

Lately I’ve been giving it a second chance, and I actually do appreciate it some ways - difficulty, bosses, size of the levels. But I still just can’t get the engagement or joy out of it that I had in playing Adventure or SS

They planned to make it 4-player co-op, but they had to rush it to release, IIRC. The four-player minigames and the fact that Adelaide, Waddle Dee, and Dedede (and are the playable characters in the minigames) are prominent are artifacts of that. Also, Goemon's Great Adventure was 4-player, not 2-player.

i thought up some extra challenges for the game when i was going for all the enemy cards:
challenge 1: beat the game start to finish with no copy abilities. inhale/spit/lift enemies overhead/hover/air bullet are all fine. you can't get all the shards this way, so that's why:
challenge 2: beat the game and get the true ending, but only have each copy ability and combo once. even getting fire before double fire counts as using up fire. having an ability star in your mouth doesn't count, but once you swallow and get it, it counts. when you have an ability, you can use it all you want until you lose or discard it. no exiting or going back to previous levels, no deaths. unclear if it's even possible.

Alright I'm back homies. Did a 100% run of Kirby 64. Neo Star was the worst planet by far. Annoying and the shards there were especially frustrating to get. Still love the game I just wished you moved a little bit faster. Favorite combo ability was the fireworks one. Really solid all around.
After that I played a little bit of Klonoa. On the Moon Castle now.

Ludo doesn't mean "game I like", it specifically defines a level of gameplay that feels out of this world. Kirby 64 is a mid platformer with a cute soundtrack and charming visuals. Examples of ludo in Kirby include playing as Meta Knight in Nightmare/Robobot, City Trial in Air Ride or The Great Cave Offensive. The only ludo aspect about 64 is the concept of combining abilities, yet it fails to make the act feel meaningful with its bland levels, poorly balanced abilities and enemies.

Probably has something to do with how few of them there were. There are only 22 of them, which is half as many as Squeak Squad, and less than any other mainline game besides the original. This was almost certainly due to the limitations of the N64, so they did like Mario and countered this by putting more effort and collectibles into every level.

This game is not even close to being difficult (not even the final boss or the extra modes). Dream Land 2, on the other hand, is the closest Kirby has ever gotten to being difficult (except for DL1's Extra Mode).

Maybe he meant because it's a lot easier to die. Besides that, the rainbow drops hunting sucks, for sure, but the powers are some of the series' best (and completely ruined in DL3, the first mediocre Kirby game)

This is one of the few 2D 3D side scrollers where all the assets and background settings are unique in every level, no other Kirby game does this in the future. It feels like you're actually travelling around through different parts of the same place.

>> No.10899695

>>10898879
I didn't say it was fun, but it's barely a challenge. The real challenge of that game is the boss rush mode, since you get no powers and (iirc) there are no health refills between stages.

it's actually incredible how realized the worlds are. not only are the parts of a level connected to each other, the levels themselves are too, so each planet sort of forms a big continuous level. even the picnic areas for the goal game are connected to the screens before.
the final regular level's layout is sublime. you keep going up the castle, having just snuck into it in the previous level. you keep going up and around, spiraling up, seeing different parts of the christmas tree. note also that the structure of the level matches the external structure of the fairy castle. then at the very top you see the massive shadow that serves as the boss arena. right at the end you get a screen where, after all the enemies that have been thrown at you, there's just the waddle dee-like N-Zs falling down. it's a bit of environmental storytelling as it reveals this shadow to be the source of the N-Zs. it's just like how zero is literally shown to be the source of dark matter in dream land 3.

Even as a kid it was only a fun novelty for like an hour. Once you've created all the possible combinations (super easy to do because the first 2 levels offer every power type between them right at the start) and you realize most of them are useless, either due to being jokes or just impractical, the novelty wears off and you're left with a Kirby game with fewer useful power-ups than any other previous Kirby game.

>> No.10901610

>>10901226
Problem here, as well as in the other Shinomura games, is that all the power ups have 1 move and 1 move only. So despite having "more" power ups they aren't as fun to use as the ones in Super Star.
