3DS LL came in. Both screens are sadly TN, but surprisingly non-yellow, although there’s a few faint burn-in spots in the bottom left corner of the top screen, but that’s barely noticeable. Best part is it came pre-hacked; I didn’t even know that when buying it; all I knew was that it came with a 128gb card and an R4. But hey, that saves a lot of time on my end. Not bad for $140

So many people are adamant about the psp being more influential in the homebrew scene in the 2000s than the game.com. It's not true I'm just getting tired of people who weren't even were online when the handheld homebrew revolution was just getting started. I understand the psp has become an impressive emulation machine, that was not the case in the 2000s, that didn't happen until the 2010s. Emulation in the 2000s was rough, except for the nes. Most people didn't even know what the fuck it was and it was also hard to find roms compared to today. I say revionists history because people don't remember those days it's like everything that's happened since then is compacted into the whole history of most things these days. It was only because of the game.com that handheld emulation became mainstream. You guys don't understand how important and influential it was to the homebrew scene, way more important than the psp

Imagine saying this when the early to mid 00's were a golden age of JP > EN translations. Emulation on handhelds was shit? Yeah, that sure was. It was shit on the PS2 as well, there's no doubt about that but emulation on X86 was great.
Sure the early 2010s were where things really kicked off but it's not as if the 2010s didn't have wonders like bleemcast or PSX & PS2 emulation making leaps and bounds. By the time 2009 rolled around I'd dumped my fat PS3 (both NA & PAL) and fat PS2 with HDloader for playing some PS2 games to use PCSX2. Yeah games needed workarounds and some 3D titles performed like shit but it was getting there.
Here's a 2009 build of PCSX2 playing SOTC on my tater. It was going to be Drakengard but that requires workarounds/patches/cheats with this version; it works fine today.

I do think calling it SP's out of line though because their H & V naming scheme works well, they could have called it with FV or F to indicate flip; but I totally understand WHY they're calling it SP.

All Miyoo's naming scheme does is scam me into checking to see if it's a handheld for weird youtubers with small hands. That time I have to spend double checking it's a small device makes me feel contempt towards the brand and I will inevitably write Miyoo off when they come out with a proper sized product.

Depends dunnit? Which systems first & second party games do you play more? Which is more comfortable in your hands? Do you like good games or kusoge?
I'd sell the 2DS since 3DS systems are easy to find and the high points of the library also play well on PC since the touch meme died down. If you've got a DS and an R4 the 3DS is dead weight. I'm slightly jaded since I have a collection of DS & 3DS consoles so the idea of losing one doesn't seem so big while I'd regret losing my Vita and was devastated when my Vita TV died.
The Vita has a great library, decent PSP & PSX support and while some vita games are making it to PC the system's still great for them, it probably has the definitive version of jetpack joyride too if I'm honest.

The more important question is why must you sell one? Poverty reasons? If there's games and titles you enjoy on both then why get rid of one at all?

So does anyone know how to disable notifications permanently via Batocera? I got my RG35XX-H yesterday and the fact that it has a notification for multiple seconds every time I take a screenshot is driving me nuts. Disabling it via the Retroarch menu only does it for the current session even if I save the configuration. Putting
>global.retroarch.video_font_enable=false
into retroarchcustom.cfg does nothing. I'm at a loss here.

I also have no idea how to get the native resolution/aspect ratio of a system forced for the RG35XX-H. If I do integer scaling it does it but isn't that still stretched or am I misunderstanding? I never really understood exactly what is fine in terms of scaling without it stretching. Integer scaling is what you want if you wish to prevent stretching but keep in mind you may or may not get some black borders on screen for certain systems. Gba on that system, for example, will have small black borders on the top and bottom of the screen.

Completed SoulCalibur II Weapon Master mode on my RP2S today. Well, I say "completed" but I'm just talking about the plot part, I still have less than half of the weapons unlocked and the other half of missions in the post-game to complete.

Retroid has hands down the best chinkheld D-pad. It's easier for me to play with it than with most official controllers despite the emulation overhead. I like that they rounded off the edges because it prevents them from digging into my thumb after playing for a long time. Vita's D-pad is much sharper than this and that's not a good thing. Face buttons are pretty good as well, but if they used micro-switches instead of membrane they would be even better. I wish they were nice and springy like the first raw of shoulder buttons.

The one-handability of the Miyoo Mini is a really underrated boon. And in a way, it makes me pay both more and less attention to the game. Less, in that I tend to play it in a much more passive manner where I’m doing something else and thus aren’t invested in the game like I would be with, say, an RGB30. But also more, in that the Miyoo’s chip is so weak that it can’t handle speed-up on GBA, so it kinda forces me to play through the game normally and not zone out as much.

I got this and sold it after a day. Not because of the controller itself mind you, the controller is amazing (though the charging didn't work for me). Was too cumbersome for me with my phone. There were pros and cons but in the end I think I'd rather a dedicated android machine.

Alright, for anyone wondering I sort of figured it out.
Notifications as a whole can't be disabled, but disabling certain parts of it can. It seems like Batocera defaults to always forcing notifications on but if you go into the submenus of the notifications you can disable and change stuff like the screenshot notifications and flashes, save the config, and it will persist across seemingly all systems. GPU screenshot turned off will mean it always only takes screenshots at native resolution regardless of what it, or you, have it set to. So for example it can upscale a GBA game 720x480 and then make it fit your 4:3 screen with the black bars and everything, but if you take a screenshot it will always be 240x160. On MML for example I'm playing it at what looks like 640x480 4:3 but the screenshots I take are native 320x240 4:3.

The only issue I have now that I can't figure out is why some screenshots cause corrupting issues like this. It's like 1/30 screenshots will look like this.

Take some baths, wear headphones in a bath or a sauna. It's awful, even IEMs are a miserable experience.
Please, I beg you to take a roaring hot almost on the verge of cooking yourself 2 hour sweatbath where you'll pass out and be at risk of death from standing up as all fluids have left your body similar to a 7 hour goon sesh.

>> No.10817563

>>10817546
>If you're taking a two-hour bath I'm assuming you're being pretty stationary,
Not necessarily. Long hot cook yourself baths are an art form in compromise and balance. From things like topping up water, drainage and removing sweat from your hands or face, wiping glasses, there's a degree of movement involved.
A sauna is a lot easier although not everyone can have a sauna at home. Saunas are shorter, plug and play experiences while long sweat yourself out baths are drawn out.
>why is the mobility of the speaker and cable a concern?
Besides just putting it down to towel your hands or head (the issue with headphones) you may consider speaker or device placement & resting. While a nice bathing tray is okay to put a device down for a second it's rolling a dice with death when there's splashing or extended hot steam coming off of it.
Same with situating a speaker, laptop or monitor on a TV tray, you have to consider the steam, splashing and cable dipping.

This is more of a /cosybath/ topic but tell you what.
If you've got the time this week, pop the hot water on and draw yourself a lovely full hot bath to the point of discomfort where your body will sweat, take your favourite handheld in with you or a book or a tablet, maybe a speaker or some headphones and top up the water every 15 minutes to keep it at a constant level. Don't have to do 2 or 3 hours just one and a quarter, enough to get you to sweating and then an hour of that. Definitely take in a couple of extra towels or cloths.
It's a nice luxury to block out that many hours for adults but that kinda bathing experience is a bit more involved.
It's how I've gotten to the point of knowing that a TV using the S++++ tier best in class toilet TV stand is a luxury but a laptop, monitor or gamepad is a pain but handhelds are a good compromise but lack on audio. At least 1 tablet has made a brave sacrifice & has been wounded in action for the sake of the cause.

>> No.10817580

>>10817563
>it's rolling a dice with death when there's splashing or extended hot steam coming off of it
If there's enough steam to risk damaging headphones or a speaker, isnt that also risking the handheld you're playing? If you're in the tub that's right by the steam, isnt it?

>> No.10817625

>>10817580
Kinda but there's variable degrees of risk.
With headphones the risk is more from sweat and it's also uncomfortable wearing headphones while sweating, that's why IEMs are preferable to on ear circumaural or supra-aural and speakers being superior overall.
With a static device on a bath tray it's there between topping up, movement etc.
A handheld you can put down on a little side table out of the way (and it's easier), same with speakers, the ol' toilet TV stand is a good place for a speaker. It's also getting breaks from being there.

Bath water isn't plumes of steam hot 100% of the time, it's not a cook off like a pan. It's usually when you introduce water that's hotter at the source (tap) to colder (bath water) to top it up. Your target for a bath temperature wants to be above the temperature of the human body so 37/38c to 40c, that's the generally agreed upon safe temperature for hot baths and you'll sweat there, but that's a slower process because your body won't be fully submerged and you'll sweat to cool off. You're safe up to around 47-49c where scalding will occur so long as you have a pain response, you can't cook yourself so long as you sweat. Somewhere in the 40-44/45c range is good.
Relative humidity will rise and so long as your bathroom is warm it's less of an issue and condensate will go towards cooler areas but it's something you'd want to consider if using vented devices where condensate could be an issue. Look at dew points for 22-23c at 70% humidity for example.

On the handheld/electronics side, this isn't so much of a problem if you're not using ports and it's not really a problem even without port covers using a device passively.
I still wouldn't be too comfortable plugging or unplugging a cable constantly in an environment with high RH or that could be considered damp though.
Being able to use a BT speaker in a situation like that for a handheld seems like a win/win for comfort & device longevity.

Having a dedicated device is just so much more convenient than a phone+controller setup. If you're using your actual phone you have to deal with

>either having your game interrupted by notifications that take up a good chunk of the screen, or set to DND and no be able to see any calls, texts, dms while you play
>your handheld and phone share a single battery, so it'll drain quick
>you can't pocket your phone with a controller attached so you have to carry it seperately, so you still have to carry two seperate devices anyways
>if you emulate any disc-based games you'll have to use up most of your phone's storage on it
>most phones today are significantly wider than 16:9 so even widescreen games will have black bars, and 4:3 games will have nearly half the screen be black
>many phones have background processes that can't be turned off that'll take up resources and hurt gaming performance
>many phones have planned obsolesce and performance will get worse over time

I'll stick with my dedicated device

>you can't pocket your phone with a controller attached so you have to carry it seperately, so you still have to carry two seperate devices anyways

Don't forget that, if your phone has a chunky case, then not only do you have to carry a phone and a controller, but you have to keep the case in your pocket when in "gaming mode". And that's assuming you have an easy to remove case (and many stronger ones aren't made to be repeatedly taken apart)

Yeah, phone screens are long and narrow so aspect ratio and actual screen used was pretty bad. Also, Daijisho or other android frontends are fantastic and fun to use but using them outside of a dedicated device feels clunky honestly.

But yeah, it's a fantastic controller going by feel.

Most of this is fair but in defense of using the phone there are some real advantages too:

>Most phones now are OLED and its excellent
>Most phones are much more powerful than these handhelds and let you play Gamecube/3ds/PSP/some PS2 without issue, and run shaders on lighter stuff
>Even with the black bars your average phone is going to give you a larger, higher quality 4:3, 16:9 or whatever screen than most of these handhelds
>Having a touch screen for NDS and 3DS is really nice
>You already have the phone

Also planned obsolescence in phones is not getting software updates any more, the phones don't get slower and still work fine, especially for something like gaming where app bloat isn't applicable.

Storing them poorly, letting them get wet/damp and not drying them, constantly keeping the battery topped off (not following a charging cycle), letting dirt/food/tar get into the device, letting the phone get really hot for an extended period of time, etc.

Playing games on the phone isn't going to meaningfully damage it unless you let it get absurdly hot, the SOC will thermal throttle to protect itself, you might degrade the working lifespan of the battery but it isn't significant and batteries are a consumable part. (Or they should be anyway, don't buy phones that don't let you easily service the battery)

Most of the time when electronics don't turn on its a) a battery that's discharged completely and has gone bad, b) cap failure, or c) corrosion from stuff getting inside. a is easy to fix, b is easy if you can solder, c is a bitch and can be unfixable

My R4 card suddenly started showing up in black-and-white, no matter what skin I use. The games are still in color, but the menu isn’t, and I’ve tried this across multiple DSs, so I know it’s an R4 issue. Anyone know what’s up? I have small-med sized hands and while I don't have experience with the steam deck, I did have the Rog Ally for a time. I can say that a device can have the best ergonomics in the world, but the problem is still going to be the weight. If you're holding a literal brick in your hand it won't feel good no matter what. It wasn't really a problem when sitting up straight and gaming on me lap, but if I wanted to lean to the side or lean back, it made my elbows sore. I also found I couldn't take one hand off to rest since then the weight gets focused too much on the other hand. Don't even try to game in bed and holding it up it will kill you.

I know Steamies like to insist the Deck has perfect ergonomics so there's no problem, but keep in mind the Rog Ally is over 80 grams lighter too.

A bunch of the wider horizontal ones are and if you don't find them perfectly comfortable there's always 3d printed grips to make them feel more like controllers. Not all horizontal ones because you can still fuck it up.

What you're more likely to find is that a device you like will be in the wrong format or have buttons in weird places. It's real minor shit.
Take the TrimUI Smart Pro for example, a budget handheld that's extremely close to a Vita in feel w/ a near 5" screen and it does feel comfortable to play for extended sessions, it even managed a symmetrical stick/face button layout that feels comfortable because they're appropriately sized.
So beyond the shitty firmware that people like to talk about what's it's absolute biggest problem? The menu buttons suck to use.
Menu button's on the bottom left, far away from the dpad so you have to almost pinch to press it so even if you could bind it as a key for RA shortcuts the left buttons would be out of the game. The start and select buttons? Opposite the menu button of course, on the bottom right, so again a pinch style of press is required and is far away from the face buttons & shoulder buttons.
They leaned too hard into copying that Vita design. A minor issue a nitpick but overall it's good enough.

Then you have devices like this or the R20S where buttons are placed in extreme positions, unergonomic bricks with even weirder button placement in extremes. This is worse than putting a stick or a button in the wrong place or in the path of something else. This is heresy of the highest order. The base of your thumbs should be resting at the bottom of this abomination but that's where the face buttons are, select and start are at least close by but those two buttons at the top are also being blocked by sticks and did anybody with a hand try and depress a shoulder button on this while using any other button?
This shit isn't even comfortable for mutants or kids to use.

Because most people don't play games that require precise movements. Everything up to ps1 doesn't need a stick at all. N64 only needs a stick for precise platformers like Mario 64, not banjo Kazooie. PSP and DS don't have precise stick movements either. It's only around PS2/GC where you start needing precise sticks and even then its still dependent on what game you play. TrimUI Smart Pro 1.04
Results are in, tried tomato again too
>A2DP
>Charge current update
Very nice
>Vulkan
Haven't had a chance to test much but PSP 50/50 for the games I play.
Better performance overall but some artifacts in a couple titles when frames drop, use OGL/Frameskip for the rest. 1:1 resolution is gonna be a nice sweetspot for some games.
>Vulkan shaders in RA
Not working. Absent in both packages but will not load as presets under vulkan
>RA config
Alright in default, had to fix and change several things in Steve's; also had to manually set my custom Save/State folders manually.
>Steve's gamesaves in the RA folder
Shit! I backed up before copying so I just deleted them.
>Apps in Steve's FW/Tomato
File browser very nice! LED options are interesting but pointless, nice enough. More like this and syncthing! Less
>Game browser under Tomato
TrimUI limitations kicking in here, unless you launch directly in RA you will have to set your core options manually
>Game browser on stock & Stock OS
Very meh for game browser, holding L/R or L/R for quick browsing still not available, favs relegated to their own section is nice for fast launching but don't pin on systems like ES etc.
Still no scraper so you'll be manually copy to the imgs folder, no sync thing. Moonlight was a nice addition as was the MP and it's coming along but still needs some work. Could do with more granular power options for CPU & GPU outside of editing config files.
>Moonlight
Very lightweight, spent around 40 minutes with a microstutter, tried with a mobile hotspot but it was the game not playing nice with SS. Performance was great for mobile hotspot for extending range.
Limited options, 720p & 1080p, 30/60 FPS and 0.5 > 10mbps.
If this could be configured independently outside of SS then it could be a winner but it's otherwise fit for purpose. I'll do a bit more testing down the like with 40fps and custom resolutions enabled on SS host side only.

Firmware could be good in a few more updates!

Yeah, it can work on Vita because you're mainly going to be playing vita games, ports or PSP games so they're not making heavy use of Start/Select. Vita also has the advantage of having low profile sticks and not two full size/switch style joycons bolted on.
It gets a little different when you're down to using them for hotkeys/combos or using other platforms. That's when you start to run into issues with the button placement.

>>10820084
Tomato is beta, Firmware is full release.
Tomato isn't much, there's a few scripts and it's been themed, has more cores and RA has been setup the way the person developing it likes.
I think the artifacting in PSP has to do with Vsync since it's framerate related, It's enabled in OGL but not there as an option for Vulkan.
I can replicate the issue and it does look like tearing when you change the resolution/frameskip values to drop it farther.
Those aren't going to be simple fixes.

Does anybody know where I can find the decompiled mario 64 built for 3ds as a CIA or something like that? I'm sure that would look really nice seeing as it could use the fullscreen resolution. I found it for my Vita and it's been my favorite way to play Mario 64 on a handheld (60 fps with no hiccups at all)

I think H SHOULD be fine for most N64 games except the most difficult ones to emulate, but don't take my word on it because I don't own that device.

It's funny to think that in my PSP & Zune days I was converting all my stuff to MP4 especially for the device.
Yeah, MKV is popular, I was taking a quick glance at my TV shows & movies I have downloaded and everything but some JAV titles is MKV nowadays and it makes sense. It's a pretty flexible container that has a whole lot of tools that make it easy to manage.

On the plus side, look at how far we've come in CPU and GPU encoding since those days. I used to stress out my little E6700 and E8700 convertin' DVD boxsets like the shield and I would have killed several people for a Q9505. I'd queue up my projects and my torrents overnight before going to beddy bed watching anime through svideo.
Now you can throw anything at a recent AMD or intel CPU if you really love CPU encoding or a GPU and have it done in a trivial amount of time.

Depends on your needs. I like the Pocket 4 Pro because it has good power, but it's also very pocketable, and portability's my biggest draw for handhelds. If I just wanna play PC games around the house in a cozy position I can just run Moonlight and stream from my gaming PC to the Retroid.

That said, if you already have a steam deck and don't mind needing a carrying case or a backpack to carry your deck around, then you probably won't get much from the Pocket 4, since Deck's admittedly the more powerful device.

>> No.10821768

The 4 Pro ticks a lot of boxes on a perfect handheld and the only major issue someone could have with it is the screen. Might be too small for some, it isn't OLED, and even if you don't care about those, it's been the most contentious aspect of the 4 Pro's reception so far with issues at launch and the ghosting. The screen was pretty bad on launch but was mostly fixed through firmware updates. There's a very mild ghosting you'll only really notice if you're playing a game pixel-perfect with no filters but even then it's so slight you'll quickly stop noticing it when you're actually playing the game.

I had a 2S before a 4P, and I wanted to spend some time with my 4P before deciding if it would be my new daily driver, but I can safely say RP4P is worth the upgrade

>how long it takes to go from powered off, to playing a game is pretty important but nobody ever talks about that with handhelds
I consider it a lot and I consider the differences in game design between games designed for handhelds vs console games. That pick up and dive right in factor. Save states can kinda do that but even then there's different game design.

I'm gonna use the best toilet seat game of all time. Tetris.
Tetris takes around 15s to boot and get you in game and you're playing.

Tetris on a comf RGB30 with jelos? It takes around 8 seconds for the boot logo to appear, it then takes around a further 20s to get to the menu, then you scroll to favs, select your game, select save file....boot...wait 2-4s for the emulator/RA to launch and then 15s into Tetris.
Tetris is efficient, it's great but you're sitting around the 1:30 mark for a device like that.

So how's the suspend function? Well.....
There's the rub with some devices. I trust it on my R36S, I wouldn't trust it in the same way I trusted my PSP or 3DS or Vita. I 100% trust it on my trimUI but I don't trust it on the RGB30 which may, may improve under arkos.
I know some will shutdown/resume with an auto state and that's great, you'll still have that 30-40s dead space where the OS and emu load but you'll dive right back in. That seems like the best of both worlds but you still have a few dead seconds exiting/entering apps/menuing.

I also look at phone games & mobile games. They're handheld too. I'm blasting through NieR Re[in]carnatin before it EOS'. When I first started emulating it, it would crash regularly, like 1 out of 4 battles/transitions would crash it and you'd restart the emulator/the app itself. It takes a LONG time to get back into that game, you have like 10s to the menu screen, a tap screen, loading, resume data, loading and it wastes a lot of time through bad design.
but the crashes, the crashes break the experience as you spend 8-10 minutes an hour of playtime waiting.

I'm disabled and BANNED FROM DRIVING, possibly for the rest of my life. As a result of this I get a free bus pass (it's not actually free) that renews every 3 years and I can get a discount on a car! I get a cheaper car! but someone else has to drive it for me and well, me family's all dead.
So I take the bus and the tram and I take my measly discount on the train when travelling farther afield. While a certain few games have stolen my lifeforce and soul I do still go out at least twice a month and I see a lot of commuters and tourists.

My bus pass ran out just before COVID and after 6 months I got it back and used an extension pass.
In that time I had to travel on a dodgy bus service with reduced capacity. Tourists and regular commuters were no longer travelling when I went to the shops.
Tourism has been in full force for a while now since everyone started declaring COVID an endemic. Yet STILL I have seen at least 7 unique individuals since Dec 2019 sporting a chinkheld in public and playing geimu on the bus and train and tram.
I've seen gameboys, I've seen a 3DS, I even saw a Vita! I have never seen a steamdeck but I have seen chinkhelds.

The people playing these may not be into handhelds the same way, they'll struggle with retroarch config but they're enjoying games on their commute. As a side note, it's rare to see tourists with suitcases playing games, they usually stare at their phone for directions from Google Maps or Apple's service, but you will see them play on the tram where the need to be aware of your stop is drastically reduced.

So yes.
I do see people in public using these things.

CRT shaders are a bit of a meme on handhelds due to a few factors.
Lower resolution leads to less flexibility overall and usually impacts integer scaling.
You're also working with a small screen so a lot of the extra detail it could generate or interpolate is wasted. While an LCD grid/dot shader/subtle scanline can do more for less.

CRT shaders can look great if you use 'em on a big 4k TV or more and edit their configs but they're a bit of a meme on handhelds where you want a bigger focus on raw scaling, fixing artifacts, masking uneven pixels and replicating that lower resolution, low PPI screen you fell in love with as a kiddo before apple & steve jobs corrupted your mind.

So travelling on public transport so much I notice trends. Times where there's say, more single mothers or the elderly on board. Or areas where there's more single mothers, routes where people may read a book or an ereader and routes where I think I'm the only person to have read a book on so I understand.
I attributed it to socioeconomic factors & poors governance in the area stealing the future of the people who lived there rather than worrying about their safety but you're less likely to get shot or even stabbed here.

I do this a bit for my devices. Generate scaled pixel grids, scanlines and overlays that can be pushed in to help.
I was more talking about the massive difference between running a basic bitch shader like hylian, royal or guest venom at 4k versus 720p. The general experience of running a CRT shader on a device with very high PPI or the limitations of the resolution to render properly.
FTR I'm watching 720p rips of succession atm through RA shaders, a tweaked hylian config with scanlines integer scaled from 720p to 4k so it def works if you know what you're doing

HELL YEAH. Blargg w/ scanline/grid overlay ftw.
I did have consoles growing up, we used RF, composite, component, SCART and eventually VGA/HDMI but the experience I remember most besides glorious SCART output from my PS2 was my AMD Athlon X2 3800+ rig. I didn't just buy a budget video card, I bought a budget video card, upgraded to a mid range card both had SVIDEO but I also bought a capture card and I'd record my PS2 RPG gameplay, clip highlights and share with friends in the scene.
My connection was ADSL, limited to 60 KB/s with next to now upstream and justin.tv etc was a far off dream so that was how we did thing.

but what I do remember was my lovely 21" CRT upstairs in my bedroom and the I think 262-28" widescreen set in the living room. I loved playing PS2 on it, it looked so good but when I discovered SVIDEO output was great and I could output and record my god.

blargg & a nice scanline/overlay looks exactly like I remember that. Be it crysis at 720x576 or anime or or FFXII. It's what I remember when viewing at an appropriate distance.

I don't use blargg, just the standard NTSC filters that come with Retroarch, but it's close enough to me.

My big problem with a lot of the "high quality" CRT filters is that they're emulating best possible video conditions, but that's not what my childhood memories are. Little kid me didn't play my analog consoles with a professional monitor and RBG cables. I used whatever TV we happened to have at the house, and whatever composite cables came with the console (and even the occasional RF if the TV didn't have enough composite ports free)

If I want "best possible video quality" visuals, I'll just to integer scaling, or some form of upscaled that keeps clean pixels. But if I wanna feel "authentic", I want it to look a little shit.

Get yourself a Retroid Pocket 4 Pro. 3DS is a bit iffy sometimes but that's less a Retroid problem and more 3DS just not having amazing emulation yet. It plays every gamecube game I have at full speed though, even with HD resolution (though there's occasional dips here and there, but again, that's emulation for you).

Only real tinkering you'll have to do is know that sometimes a game will run better with OpenGL, and sometimes a game will run better with Vulkan, but that's as difficult as toggling a video setting before launching a game so that shouldn't be an issue.

lol, Well yeah, it scales out at about 14 inches on a 27" 1440p display and you're playing on like a 4.7" (perhaps) screen.
It's a pretty brutal mogging desu but not to worry, holding the screen at around 35-50cm away gives an AOV of 11.9 - 16.4 degrees. To get the same effect on say a 43" TV you'd need to sit between 3.25 - 4.55 metres away.
Even viewing the image I am about 97cm away and my AOV is 18.2 degrees. To match what you'd experience on the handheld I'd have to sit between 107.5 - 149cm away That 10cm doesn't sound like much but for a 2nd monitor the first stage is sitting back in your chair for the 10cm and the 2nd measurement requires me to either step back behind my chair and squat to see the effect or move my chair back 1 full length.

Screenshots can be incredibly deceptive and people will say "that looks like shit" when they don't conceptualise how it appears on a device with and higher PPI count and scale appropriately. I sit around 2 metres away from my 28" monitor in the living room when watching TV in a comfy lounge chair, the AOV for a 28" monitor at 2m is 17.6 degrees, very close to your handheld when you view it and...the scanlines are subtle.
but in the attached image they will look incredibly harsh, while IRL they blend almost seamlessly and recreate how my TV looked watching rips through SVIDEO. If I move closer the trick is exposed and it turns to shit. It even does interlacing very well buttttt you need to know how to configure shaders beyond the default settings.

I'd really love a steam deck to see how much that 7"+ screen makes a difference for viewing at arms length. It seems to be almost the perfect size for 6th generation games.,

I'm not that/those anons I just shitpost a bit about rockchip but looking at recent trends the idea of devices aimed at certain systems is a solid one when priced low.
I like my TrimUI for GBA, It's a luxurious 4.4" it breaches the blessed 72 PPI/DPI limit but I would stick my pee pee in it for GBA.

If some chad entity wanted to release handhelds not designed by AI with some nice custom screens that scale perfectly but also supported other systems well I'd start collecting them all.
A vertislop WSC at 5x res 1120x720? I don't NEED ergonomics I need this shit in my veins bro. A hori model comes out 7 months later. I NEED IT IN MY VEINS GIVE IT TO ME NO SHAME
A hori model with actual ergonomics and buttons on the right place a few months after, you knows it.
A game consoie datafrog spesh 2 weeks later. sirs you have a sale.

Then on the other side, I'm seeing devices aimed at other systems 2560x2240 bricks mimic-ing the RGB30 and I think HOW MANY JRPGS CAN I REPLAY ON THIS FUCKER and I add to cart.
I look at the DS, It supports drastic without the linear filter and it has stacked screens and a mega horislop 8.4 incher wideboi with RK3566 enters the chat well I'll go prison gay if I have to for that one. At this point I have around 34 different rockchad devices and some of them have evolved from the jelly and my bank account screams but still, the people say they want gamecube and PS2 but I say no.

It's insanely robust and the deck has a loooot of extra buttons to tie functions to like the steam controller did.

I went from using M&KB for 10 years in most situations to daily driver an elite controller S2 with SI, watched a bunch of YT vids to assign extra functions, get used to layers & profiles and honestly it's probably the best piece of software for gamepad use and compromising.

I agree with this because I played a massive amount of Q3, Diabotical and OW but I can say definitively I wouldn't go back to an FPS on a controller on a console or default.
I'd consider it with steaminput if it had rear buttons so I could do things like jump/crouch/aim at the same time but aiming, man it's just so hard with a controller.
You can grind out learning to aim on M&KB with like aimlabs/kovaaks over a few months, I learned to use my left hand for aiming and right hand for KB that way but you do the same on controller and the consistency isn't there. You'll get used to movement and movement is it's strength but aiming, man.
