I hope 12 was far enough along in the planning stages. It sounds like 12 was going to be the last game anyway under the old heads, so would be a shame to scrap it now and not pour the last remaining dudes heart into it and all of those who were understudies as both a final tribute to the creators of it and the franchise as a whole. I would be at peace with it ending after that.

I'm pretty sure Bandai have at least 2 Dragon Quest games and 3-5 DBZ ones in works by now, and Toriyama contributed to all of them.

I doubt they will do more then just adding the "in memory of" screen to the game. I'd like it to be a proper sendoff and a farewell to the series, but we all know it won't happen with big companies

It's unfortunate that during the 90s, when CT was made, Toriyama art style leaned too much in DBZ and everyone had angular faces and muscles. DQ games (like DQ5 in the middle of picrel) suffered too.

Nah, it was very much a group effort where everybody contributed. We had a thread about this earlier. Kato did a lot but saying he did "pretty much all" is way overstating it.
>>/vr/thread/10721643
https://www.resetera.com/threads/beyond-the-dream-team-an-overview-of-masato-katos-work-and-contributions-to-chrono-trigger.561646/ (forgive the resetera link, good info in the thread and links)

Even Masato Kato wouldn't claim to do all of it
>The way that SQUARE creates their events is that they first discuss the story thoroughly with the entire project team, and then let each of the individual scenario writers freely (I say freely here, but of course, if it's not up to our standards; it's rejected) fill in the little details on the sub-events; so the people credited for writing the scenarios aren't necessarily the people who write the stories. For example, in Chrono Trigger, Mr. Yuji Horii wrote the basic plot line first; following that, it was edited and rewritten by me, and even further on after that, the sub-scenarios were created by Mr. Tokita and Mr. Kitase. So it all gets kinda' mixed up at the end. But the 12,000 B.C. part was 100% my original idea. After writing the story for this part, I also did the events for Zeal Palace, the dungeons, and everything else by myself (laughs).

>great character designs, amazing 16bit pixel art
It does have decent music and grafix. I'd rather watch an actual anime instead of dumping a couple dozen hours into mashing A

>rather simple but massive feeling plot
Rather simple is a concise way to put it. Wake up, kill the ancient evil, even if you end up facing it at the height of its power

>a fun active time battle system that lets you do combos between characters
What's fun about a system that can not only be beaten by mashing A, but doesn't even let you do anything else since the majority of the attacks are damage moves with different animations and the difficulty is nonexistant?

>multiple endings based on player decisions.
meme, you get one real ending, like one other real ending and a handful of variations of the same thing when you go into ng+ and beat lavos early.

Like, it's an incredibly shallow game that's outperformed by at least a third of the entire JRPG library, from persona to any non-kusoge dungeon crawler. it's a kid's game that should be something you compare with Math Blaster and whatever lego game your mom bought you because it was on sale, not a "top 10 masterpiece of all time"

NTA, but haven't you faggots realized that you should stop buying and even playing modern games all together? All these talentless shitlib writers aren't going to go away, so start making a backlog of older/retro games you plan to play and start emulating/playing them instead of getting caught up in a retarded extension of the culture war that won't achieve anything. I've done that for nearly a decade now and am enjoying gaming more than ever before.

Learn systems programming (via C and assembly) and Japanese. A lot of what you are trying to do with those improvements is low-level memory stuff, so C and assembly is a definite boon to learning that. Depending on the system, you might have to learn either MIPS 6502 or some other type of architecture, but there are a lot of resources online for all of them. The learning Japanese part is kinda self-explanatory, but it does train you to learn a lot about a different culture and how they use language and what not.

Thanks for the reply! I can pick up kanji pretty easily, now (I can read kana and took Chinese classes), and I know the grammar, so Japanese shouldn't be an issue at this point. What do you personally recommend for learning all of those programming languages?

>> No.10775749

For C/C++, I'd recommend https://www.learncpp.com/

It's free, is constantly updated (the most recent update being a week ago) and it covers all the basics of the language and things like memory management.

cplusplus.com has an amazing reference section that you can use whenever you want to check what is part of the standard C/C++ library.

Programming
Abstractions in C++ is a good book to learn a lot about data structures and algorithms. I've heard good things about it.

For the 6502, 6502.org is a great resource to learn what how to program in 6502 assembly.

For MIPS, there are a lot more resources, but https://cupola.gettysburg.edu/oer/2/ and https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/MIPS_Assembly
are good.

Honestly though, unless you absolutely have to, I would recommend sticking with C/C++ since they represent the ideas you are constructing with them better and they are less verbose. But these are here just in case. There's also x86 assembly, but at that point, you might as well use C/C++

I am 32 years of age and I just beat this game this morning for the first time in my life, at the suggestion of a friend. I started about two weeks ago. I didn't know a single thing about it except for that the funny dbz man did art for it. Not gonna bother spoiler tagging since I assume everyone here has beaten it, but everything below here is spoiler rich. Going to note how my playthrough ended up and some thoughts on it, hopefully someone of you find it interesting as I assume most of you had your first experience with the game closer to the time it actually came out nearly 30 years ago.

I killed Magus. I did not revive Crono. The only character side quests I completed were Lucca's and Merle's (charge the sun stone and get the rainbow shell iirc). I didn't know I needed to have Robo in my party to finish the quest with Fiona and the skeleton monster in the sand, and I got the carpenter's tools, but didn't know how to use them for Frog's side quest. I rolled with Frog, Lucca, and Marle, and beat Lavos with this party in the high level 40's. Took a couple tries. I accessed Lavos via storming the Black Omen, don't remember which age.

I feel so fucking robbed about Crono staying dead. Yeah, that little blue retard in 2300 A.D. said to find a magician in a festival. I talked to every npc in the festival multiple times except for exactly two: Lucca's robot and the exact fucking guy I needed to talk to in the horror tent. I even entered the tent, looking for a character who I expected had the same sprite as Melchior/Balthazar etc. I had completely ruled out that I needed to talk to a fucking mini game npc to resurrect the main character. I think it's really cool that your main character can die and stay dead. That's actually tight. But I'm fucking pissed that it locked me out of Gaspar's hints for how to complete the other side quests, since his dialogue was stuck on pic related. You will now proceed to call me a zoomer for this.

Anyway, game is pretty cool.

Well actually my mind is blown because I didn't even know you could continue the game this way, without doing any of those things.
I've only played the game twice though and I never cared for NG+ because the game is already laughably easy normally, playing with high level would make all gameplay entirely pointless

Glad you found it interesting! Yeah I after I beat it I cruised around on the wikis for a while, it's absolutely insane how many endings there are and how much freedom you have to do or not do things. And some of that is immediately obvious. Like my mind was blown when I first ended up in the End of Time hub and saw that you could fight Lavos whenever the hell you wanted to.
Also side note but the Lavos shell fight was insane slog when he took on the aspect of Nizbel. Since I had no lightning attacks I had to spend like fifteen minutes regular attacking him for an average of ~32 damage a pop.

CT was the first JRPG I played where I loved all the companions and actively switched them out so I could play with them all. I think I beat Ravos with the starting 3 for sentimental/lore reasons but through the middle part id play with Eira, Frog, and Marle(?) the most often.

As a fun party anecdote I had Eira as my lead character after Chrono died and when I got to the airship prison section I was excited when I realized that since Eira didn't use weapons she could just fight all the guards solo while my other two characters just sat around. I later learned that it was actually pretty easy to get your weapons back but I ended up replaying that section a couple of times to explore the different paths.

DQ2 did a lot of influencial things nonetheless, like the way each character has his own backstory that makes him just as important as the "protagonist" and with their own personality and style; or the way each enemy is represented by its own graphics which can all be seen at once (up to that point Wizardy was still stuck to having one graphic for a group oft of enemies; and if there were several groups at once only the first group could be seen). There are plenty of little things like that which became so standard it's actually hard to realize they were important at all at that time. Reducing DQ2 to Ultima-Wiz clone is very reducing, it's like saying Duke Nukem 3D is a clone of Doom or Resident Evil a clone of AitD, dismissing all the things these games were influencial for.

There are maybe one or two moments Woolsey or the fan-translation do it better, but these are so minor compared to literally everything else about it. While I do prefer other manga artists' style more, I do greatly appreciate Toriyama-sensei's own unique style he gifted a lot of great projects. It still has its charms, and he was a big part in becoming a key member of the dream team that produced the character and enemy designs featured one of my most favorites video games and reason for me being here with Chrono Trigger. A big part of my youth in more than just manga and games, he has influenced a lot from all over. Glad to have been in the same timeline.
