Yes, I only played the series just in the past few years and I would say there is an incredible experience there largely due to level design, lore, atmosphere and music.
It feels like such a grand adventure despite not actually encompassing that much of an area, it felt much smaller than 3 for example.
What's funny is that I did not like it in the first hour because it was the slowest playing KF out of all the series and had some bullshit deaths early on but by the end I felt I had played something special.

I've only played II-IV. I'd probably order them IV > II > III, but they're all very close. IV definitely solidified Tsukasa Saitoh as my favorite FromSoft composer. I received my copy of Shadow Tower a few weeks ago, and I'm slowly working my way through it. So far, it might be on par with IV. I'm loving the degradation system. Seeing it in action is really making me wish IV's degradation and upgrade systems were a bit more meaningful.

I also played through Echo Night recently. Very cute and underappreciated, but not on the same level as KF.

>>10720080
I also played DS before KF. That sense of adventure you're talking about is the main appeal of both franchises for me, and I think they really captured it best with KFII. I think IV is the better game overall, as II is pretty rough around the edges. That said, II's level design is something else entirely. I'd highly recommend it if you haven't given it a shot yet.

>> No.10723954

Well it was their very first game and the very first fully 3d fps for the ps1, if they knew the limitations of the hardware and their limits they would probably have done what other companies did and limit their levels to small chunks, make enemies into sprites, choose a top down view to limit how much has to be rendered or some other graphical easy path.
But the fact that they didn't let them create 2 and 3 which were properly realized versions of their first attempt and incredibly ambitious for the hardware, an large interconnected, open world with minimal loading. At a time when people were marveling at Tomb Raider 1 they had months prior already released KF3.

>> No.10723974

>>10723948
The ghosting happens on real hardware as well.

If you got far enough into IV to start exploring the lost city, and you enjoyed that level design, try II JP if you can stomach its pretty ugly visuals. It has the best sense of adventure in the whole series, as far as I'm concerned.

>> No.10724027

>>10723948
You should be able to minimize if not outright eliminate the ghosting by changing some of the settings. Don't remember which but many games have little guides for tweaking to get to your liking.
If you're using PCSX2 that is.
As for 1, it's the most bare bones one of them all, so you might want to start with 2 or 3.

Do King's Field games reward drawing your own maps or are the maps too big?

I'm playing an indy game at the minute and I'm really, really enjoying the map making aspect of it, using it to smoothly navigate confusing as hell levels is really fun. Always meant to get around to King's Field but never got to it

>> No.10724709

>>10724703
You usually get partial maps of some areas and a full map near the end.

>> No.10724775

>>10724703
The mapping system varies from game to game. King's Field II and IV both have regional maps. These are filled out by default and, in my experience, are of limited use. King's Field IV also has an overpowered 3D map you can get at the very end of the game. However, it will be mostly useless by the time you can acquire it, outside of secret hunting. King's Field III has one main map that you get pretty early into the game. It starts out blank, and is filled in as you explore. I haven't played the first game, so I can't comment on its system.

King's Field II would be really hard to do handmade maps for due to it's extreme verticality. King's Field III's levels, on the other hand, are essentially flat, but map making is handled automatically. King's Field IV has II's shitty regional maps, and is substantially less vertical, so that might be where you'd want to start.

As an aside, I think Shadow Tower is probably the best King's Field engine game to try if you're interested in doing your own mapping. It has no in-game maps whatsoever, and its self-contained areas would be much easier to organize than the large, open worlds of KFII and KFIV.

Does Shadow Tower become difficult to navigate if you don't take maps? I'm really enjoying the fact that I'm having to make the maps because of the crushing darkness

KF1 rewards map drawing.
KF2 is a 3D haystack so it's impossible to draw one.
KF3 is a bit too basic to need it.
KF4 has similarily basic individual areas but it all forms a connected haystack on a massive scale where you will need to draw a flowchart over connecting areas rather.

I've played through all the games using only in-game maps, but it can definitely get frustrating at times (except in KFIII). Shadow Tower is full of winding hallways and warp points, so you'll definitely struggle without a map. You can use torches to temporarily give you a higher draw distance, but the game's unbuffed draw distance is very, very small.
