Are there any water/swimming levels that aren't complete misery to play? It seems like even really top-tier games tend to shit the bed with them. I started playing Banjo-Kazooie recently and was really enjoying it, but trying to get Banjo to swim into the fucking bubble in Clanker's Cavern is an exercise in frustration.

Donkey Kong water levels. I’d recommend the TMNT on NES but it took me 20 years to figure out you can switch turtles in the middle.

Blaster master also has a cool water level. It’s super hard though.

Fun swimming in the ocean, but then the game moved you to tight enclosed places like the Pirate fortress sewer and water temple. Worst part is those places had currents so if you screwed up you had to take the long way around to get back.
More of a level design problem though, the implementation is good.

Swimming in the ice levels was comfy too, probably mainly because of the relaxing music. Always nice when a pufferfish exploded, his spikes flew away and the sound of it matched up with the music.

Then there was a level with a lanternfish that followed you. When you took a turn, the lanternfish also made a turn and there was an instant where his lantern would sweep through my dimly lit room and light it up. Very cool little effect.

I honestly feel SMW perfected the Mario swimming mechanic. It's not as heavy/annoying as in SMB1/3 (not counting frog suit) and it has the mechanic to go faster of you graba a Koopa Shell or some other object. I love it. Levels like Donut Secret 1, Vanilla Dome 2 or Soda Lake are always a fun romp.

Filtered. MM has one of the easiest water temples. The swimming direction you're meant to take in the big central chamber could not be more obviously telegraphed each time you pass through.
