Post your setup / gaming space

Show off that sweet collection of carts and consoles crowded around your TV, complete with a lazy boy chair and a can of cola sitting on top of your CRT.

Show off that sweet emulation PC running a 4090 that you use for playing 8bit games, complete with a rotating monitor for arcade games.

Show off that Chinese handheld and your favorite chair.

Show off your $600 MiSTer setup.

I don't care how you game, this is a thread for cumming over each other's setup, no judgement unless you've got roaches. Post your setup!

Pic related is from Google, it's not my setup (although I sure wish it was)

This is the closet in my bedroom. Usually there's sliding doors on it, but I took the doors off to take this picture. Otherwise only one half can be open at a time.

This is mostly a storage area, but as you can see I also have a CRT and I game here. The left side is Super Famicom carts on the shelves up top, and Famicom and Mega Drive games in the shelves on the bottom. Behind the shelves is general storage, I've got camera and whatnot back there.

The shelves around the TV hold all kinds of stuff. Games for various systems, some DIY stuff for modding or making homebrew games, some random consoles and peripherals, etc.

I like these shelves a lot. They hold 30 games each and there's a drawer in the bottom for loose manuals or note sheets. I have 4 of these and up top is a Kirby coin bank, Tears of the Kingdom Master Sword light, and a few Mario figures and Zelda amiibo.

The drawers on the right side are for Famicom games.

The blue box is a Sega coin bank. When you place a coin down the lid of the box opens and the bear from Altered Beast pops his head up to look, and then Opa Opa from Fantasy Zone comes out to take the coin. During this, it plays a random song from any of the games on the Astro City mini. I love this dumb thing.

Beside the TV I store games for various systems. Game Boy/Color/Advance, Game Gear, Virtual Boy, Neo Geo Pocket Color, Wonder Swan, Master System, 32X, N64, and there's a few more SNES games in there too. The big white bin at the bottom is my Virtual Boy and the box on top of it is some extra cable's for when I switch out whatever console is connected to the TV.

Mini arcades (Egret and Astro City), and some peripherals and expansions for the Egret. I have the stick for the Astro City also but it's in a different room.

And the curtains are to help keep the sunlight off my games. Normally there's sliding doors over this closer but I like to keep the doors cracked open on each side to prevent mold (especially since I bag my games to protect from Knicks and scratches), so I hung the curtains to help prevent my games from getting his by direct sunlight when I'm airing out the closet.

The left side is pacman, the right side is umaibo which is a snack here in Japan.

You can see the sliding door here. This is how idooks when I slide it open to play - only one side is open at a time.

This concludes the tour of my gaming space. When I close the doors it disappears, except for all the posters and shelves full of guide book, toys and amiibo, boxed games etc on the other side of the room.

Also this room has tatami flooring so it's super soulful. Goes well with games like Goemon or Pocky and Rocky.

Yes, Outrun for arcade via the Pocket core. The N64 is directly connected to the TV via its lone composite port (looks like shit). I have a VGA to HDMI adapter for the Dreamcast (looks great). My Denon AVR has composite and component connections that route through HDMI, which is how the OG Xbox and LaserDisc player are connected.

Lot's of rain/melting snow last couple months. Got them for free in the summer and had no place to put them in my house at the time with plans to move them into my basement with my others in the spring. Where I live, it's kinda on a small hill. My yard and the garage are on a slight decline, so any water runs down the sidewalk in the middle of the yard, down the middle of the garage and out under a lip of the garage door, or down a drain in the middle of the garage. Sometimes though, the drain gets backed up and pools water. I was aware this could happen and tried to take precautions by placing them on a tarp furthest away from where the drain is, but i guess the amount of water i got was enough to pool over it.

It's really just the bottom edge of the one side that got wet. I am hoping I can dry it out somehow(i already moved it further away) and it doesn't rot. Fortunately, it's only a generic black side paneling for Capcom Bowling and not the Time Pilot i have also in there i had further away with full side art.

Oh my god you people are so insufferable. An open tuning isn't "detuning" your guitar the instrument is designed for you to fucking tune it don't you understand that? You are correct that an open tuning is not a detuned guitar, when the strings are strummed they ring out a chord or key

I'm moving in with some family who live near the Bay Area to save money while I change careers. I'm trying to figure out if there are any good jobs out there. You don't have to get super specific, but your advice would be welcome.

i get asked this question a lot
i have several mvs boards &
ways to connect them to crt
i also have the aes and custom controllers
im holding out for a smaller cabaret or 1-slot
i DID build\convert a small 60$ 1up cab to a jamma cab for fun
with the narrow doors here & the convoluted entry-path to even get to my front door
i probably wouldnt be able to get a full-size cab inside kek

if you are asking for life advice on 4chinz i would advise against it but i will give you a rundown on how i turned things around in the next post anonkun

10 years ago or less:
i had nothing but my 3ds &
one guitar+ some pedals
i slept on my brothers couch
i was very depressed.
my credit score was in the 300 range
i would pick up odd jobs with my engineering degree but nothing worth a shit:
print lab repair technician (zazzle, san jose)
dental implant lab assistant (underpaid af, south bay)
turned down a job at fuckin chuck e cheese in san bruno (electromechanical engineer jr)
[in hindsight i probably should have taken that one for the resume bullet despite shit-tier lowball pay]

what ironically got the ball moving for me was v strange:
as an interim gig i registered with the bureau of investigative services, got my CA guard card\state bonding
applied at a few mega-corporate security companies
at first i subbed random "assignments" but after a month or two of always covering\never calling out etc
i got stable gigs\management positions for very large conglomerates in the bay area
my gigs turned less into "standing security dog lel" and into "liaison" or "night engineer" &
i was v quickly responsible for keeping the power on for large skyscrapers +the occasional 'upscale' position
after a year of this i changed companies &
worked at various data centers\servers all over the bay
santa clara, palo alto, san jose, milpitas, hayward, san francisco, etc
i would basically just program the biometrics\handscanners for entry into the locked server cages
clients included: microsoft, amazon, facebook, chase, wells fargo, etc

keep in mind i still only have an associates degree

both of those fields make more than i do but i share a similar worldview with my boss & coworkers+ have basically ZERO commute

I actually have an unopened jar of it but I'm not using it. I tend to slide both doors to the center so that the left and right sides are open, so the airflow should help prevent mold growth. I'm considering that putting a USB fan at each end (one to blow in, one to blow out) would probably be much more effective. I have the curtains up to block light when the doors are open. You can't see it but I have a big sliding door to the balcony in this room so there's lots of airflow.

- find auctions that start very low (like 10-25% of actual price), these have the highest chance of good margins
- calculate the max price you can live with and still feel good about winning at, round up slightly to the most likely "common" bid people would enter, then add a couple of cents. take note of this number
-set a timer for when the auction has 3 minutes to go
- enter this number as your bid with 5 seconds remaining
- you will win the auction most of the time, often times paying around 50-75% of your actual bid since you may get lucky and the other couple of bidders did not really calculate the items full value up front or were hoping nobody was lurking. Another tip is start a long time ago. I've been collecting for several years now. Originally (and for quite some time) my collection was just a drawer with a handful of SNES games in it. Then it was half a drawer. Then the full drawer. Then I got more stuff as time went on.

Collections don't happen overnight, and I spend a lot of time watching and waiting until a cheap listing for a game I want pops up and then I buy it before someone else does.

I have like 10 CRTs of various types, I have literally had to turn down free ones because they'd have been redundant.

Just ask your friends and family. Put out some feelers and a blanket post and you'll be surprised what crawls out of the woodwork.

hey /vp/, /tg/ tourist here
Just bought a new house and I finally have space to display all of my systems. Don't have a great picture right now, and the space isn't even done yet. I plan on eventually getting a CRT or two to set up to play my retro systems that need it, but in the interim I've been experimenting with cheap RCA to HDMI converters and have not been that impressed. I've seen something called the Retrotink that is supposedly pretty good, but the price is scaring me away. I also have a Raspberry Pi 5 lying around, so I was thinking of throwing Retropie on it instead for the time being. Thoughts or is the Retrotink worth the entry fee?

>> No.10696205

>>10696127
I have a retrotink 5x pro
If you plan to primarily use a modern TV that is.
If you think you're going to use a CRT more when you get one, I don't know if a tink is worth it as just a stopgap. There are cheaper ones but not much cheaper and I haven't used them so idk what you miss out on.
for me, I use both about the same and didn't have a good CRT until recently.
I DONT feel compelled (at least right now) to get the mega expensive one that does 4K. The VGA in is nice though.
The 5X is really really good though imo.
Here's a couple reasons why I like it in no particular order:
>Input lag not noticeable to me
>on newest firmware mine seems to auto detect the right input and switch automatically
>multiple profiles
>scan line filters
>USB powered so I can use a multiport USB brick to power my HDMI autoswitcher, my Gcomp composite/component autoswitcher, and my retrotink all from one psu
>the profiles let you just stretch or position the image (basically pixel by pixel) exactly how you want on the screen. this feature alone is my favorite, so you can make sure it's exactly where you want
>tons of input options including composite component svideo and RGB SCART which as a burger I had never used before, my genesis uses this port exclusively now.

My current setup would not be possible without the retrotink, it is probably the single most important piece of hardware besides the consoles themselves if you want to play bare metal. If you plan to incorporate a modern TV to your setup long term, it's really really really worth it. You might be able to get by with the cheaper one but I'd spring for the 5X just for the remote and being able to scale and stretch and position the final output exactly how you want, plus the plethora of input options. It really ties my whole everything together.

>cheap rca to shitdmi adapter
not recommended, lag, incorrect interger scale, so chinese it might actually damage your monitor
I have one hooked up to a toaster PC and cheap CRT
but I only use it for cartoons
and even then it's not the best

mister is worth looking into
i dont use analog out on my rp3b+ I can't speak for that type of functionality
the pi to generalize is usually very underpowered
I get temperature icons on it doing arcade games
I wish I never bought it honestly

if you don't want to overspend on the 5X pro or 4k tink
a 2x pro or china knockoff version will suffice
you might want to grab a scanline generator though (hdmi scanline generator)

I also recommend following this notion. A console with proper maintenance done (capacitor replacements) and worthwhile mods (audio circuit corrections, not HDMI mods or RGB NES shenanigans) plus a flash cart is a good first couple of steps. After that grab a couple of your favorite games, especially if the carts or packages are nice (Famicom Salamander is pretty fucking sick and has no real language barrier), and then get a flash cart, burn some CD's, and maybe an ODE if applicable and you've got a system with a dying drive. Even that can be pretty pricey for one system so pick and choose accordingly.

I sold off every cartridge and retro console I still had, I just didn't use it much and preferred using emulators anyways as it was more convenient, I do miss my old stuff sometimes, but it's fine, my current setups is essentially all ROMs on newer hardware, like my laptop and this smartphone I had, all I needed to do was attach a controller to it and it was ready to go, it's what I play most.

If I ever change my setup, I'd most likely go from this, and my laptop, to a tablet, since I'd be able to attach a controller to it like this, or mirror its screen to the TV to use it like a console instead.

I think latency and screen mirroring isn't quite there yet though, HDMI surely is, but most low end tablets don't support it, it feels like a dying market nowadays now that I really think about it.

A bit unrelated, but any anon here who could help me out a little with my capture setup? I figured this wouldn't warrant its own thread, so I wanna try my luck here.

I have tons of PAL consoles hooked up to my CRT TV via Composite and just recently had the idea that it would be nice to be able to split the output to my PC as well, so that I can play using the TV and at the same time capture everything to stream over to friends in private. I have never done ANY type of game capturing before and just used my cheap Composite to USB thing I originally used for VHS tapes. That one actually worked for my PS3, but absolutely shit the bed once I tried my NES and SNES - intense vertical flickering or no picture at all, which I assume means the thing just isn't suited for this type of usage.

After doing a bit of research, I was even more confused than I was before. People either suggest high-end capture devices, scalers, or both, and I have absolutely no idea what does what or what is ultimately necessary. I wouldn't mind paying a little extra for something that fulfills all my needs, especially since I'd like to be able to capture from pretty much everything I have (PAL consoles, some NTSC-J consoles I didn't hook up yet, some DOS machines, older PC with VGA-out), but I'm also really just looking to capture stuff with no obvious sync issues or anything like that - I do not care about getting the highest quality and actually prefer Composite look over Component for example.
So, are these scalers like the Retrotink just luxury to make video with low dimensions look better, or are they a necessity to be able to capture from certain consoles in the first case? Or maybe I just need a specific capture device?

>> No.10710752

No, it looks like a store because you have front-facing cardboard boxes for shit like controllers (literally hoarding) sitting next to your games just like a store would do. And also because you literally have store kiosks sitting in your room.

It looks like a store, and you were definitely intending for it to look like one.

>> No.10710760

>>10710728
Oh that's easy. You need to get a split composite cable. It has one set of female inputs and two sets of male plugs - it will allow you to plug your console into two devices at the same time.

If you intend to play the game on your TV and just record it on your PC, then you can use a cheap composite-to-HDMI adapter, you can find them all over Amazon for like $10-20. Those adapters are awful if you want to use them to play the games on a modern TV, but they're perfectly fine if you just plan to use it to record on a secondary display.

The only other thing you need is a capture device. I don't stream but personally I use a Genki Shadowcast to play console games from my PC (it's convenient so I can OCR Japanese text) and that should be enough for your needs as well. I think it sells for like $50 on Amazon? I backed the Kickstarter so I'm really not sure.

All in all, expect to pay $60-70 for everything.

Great collection, anon. I’d suggest Gauntlet IV and Kolibri to have a really impressive one.

Livin' the 90's dream. I only bought a few in the early 2010's and they are a treasure. I have no clue what they go for now, but I mostly regret not buying EarthBound CIB back then. I hemmed and hawed for years but never pulled the trigger.

Everything here owns. Enterprise, CRT & VCR, GB Player, bungee'd joystick, random electronics under nuTV, MK stool, literal shag carpet (is such a thing possible in 2024?), curtains, figures, and top it off w/ comfy chair 'n pupper. I wanna come over and play at Anon's.
