The SMS, MD/Gen, and DC were all, in their own ways, forward-looking consoles, whereas the Saturn was backwards looking in almost every way.

If Sega had held the thing back and took their time with it (thus showing they weren't going to do another 32X) things would have been very different.

It is truly bizarre that while Yu Suzuki was pioneering 3D games and, with VF, had made them viable, Sega's consumer division went in the opposite direction and stuck with 2D. Just bone-headed.
