Starting a new playthrough of the FF series, what order do i go in? My fave is 9 and i wont play anything higher, I've never played 1-3, they might be too old for me.

Last thread I was griping cuz I have a hard time getting into JRPG's

I went ahead and started FF8 and... well... I'm having fun

Yeah, I'm thinking I just chose a rough bunch for my introduction into the genre. I loved DQ11, but every RPG I tried after that burnt me out because it was the first in the series as usually I like to start from the beginning and see how the series evolved... but with RPG's, that's a much, much bigger commitment.

Same happened when I tried playing Breath of Fire 1 and a couple other RPG's. Maybe I'll got back once I've played some of the better ones, but we'll see.

Also, after watching some footage of the remasters, I plan on playing the ps1 games emulated with slightly higher resolution. The remasters models look so out of place on top of the backgrounds, where as if you upres the original models a bit it looks perfectly fine in my opinion. Gonna finish 8 then move on to some of the other recommendations I got in the 8 vs 9 thread.
(seriously though, how does the ost keep getting better? It's making ne excited to get to 7,9, and 10's ost)

Agree with posters above, you shouldn’t be so dismissive of 10. And I reckon start with 1, make a varied party and understand that dungeon exploration is often not a one and done deal, your party will reach its limit and you will need to regroup. It’s old, but not hardcore.

The only game I’d consider skipping is maybe 2 just because it is its own thing level progression wise and more of a commitment.

After 7 all the staff from square were starting to leave, they had no idea what to do with FF after that, and they still don't. So every game since 7 is some weird experimental mess with horrifically convoluted shoujo/romance demographic writing.

PS1 version of the original FF, VII and IX are the only FF games I like. From PS2 and onwards the shit is just too weeb. The series was best when it was doing cool steampunk fantasy or gritty dieselpunk sci-fi, not whatever that Japonci Disney bullshit in X was.

I gave VI a real honest shot but I'm sorry, it just has a nonsensical plot, and the characters are schizo and melodramatic even by JRPG standards. I will never understand how so many people think it's the best, I am convinced it's just a meme I fell for for years. Meanwhile II, III, IV and V were just not interesting enough to hold my attention.

I had always remembered like FF2 enough, but hadn't played it in two decades.
Last year I finally replayed it, and I was right. It's pretty good. I enjoyed it a lot. It's nowhere near as bad as people say and I did it without any guides. I just played and experimented.

1 on NES is kind of excruciating to play. Your attacks miss constantly for most of the game, making grinding insufferable. Play the Origins PS1 version, it's a perfect remake and is faithful, except without the few bad things but still retains most of the difficulty. The PSP versions are easier with ugly sprites.

FF2 is dogshit, FF3 is passable/forgettable. For the SNES games, the order doesn't matter really but they're all good. 7 is good. 8 sucks. So order really doesn't matter, just skip 2 and 8 or save them for last because they're very low priority.
