Early PSX models had problems with color banding that made shading look too sharp instead of a smooth gradient. Early PSX games often didn't have dithering but this quickly changed as more devs started to use dithering to remedy this issue until the banding was fixed in the slim model.

You're literally supposed to be blending the dithering.

The whites are too overblown, anon. Try first by raising the scanline bright pixels parameter a tad until you can see very faint scanline gaps in the bright pixels, and if you absolutely desire not to have any such gaps on bright pixels, lower it just the smallest amount until there's no gaps, but before it starts blowing out the bright colors like that. This webm I've posted a few times used royale. To diminish the scanlines/mask being borked by video compression, I simply reduced the resolution for the webm. Back then I used downsampling because I couldn't figure out how to make GT games look better but I have dropped that since it made games look too blurry. You can see a bit of that blurriness in that the webm looks a bit vaseline smeared. Still, that twilight is fucking nice and it's a shame it got downgraded for the following entries despite more tech prowess.

I certainly do. CRTs just make retro video games look better, and since I don't have a real CRT it's all I can really do, it still looks better than having raw pixels for me, a good CRT shader can make a huge difference in your playing experience, from my experience at least. At this point I genuinely prefer an accurate shader over a real CRT, since the CRT would essentially just be there for this one hobby of mine, with a modern TV I can use it for other things in my living room, like streaming services or browsing the web, and then if I feel like playing something I'll just use an emulator with a shader, it's just more convenient overall.

I get the appeal of an actual CRT, and of course the image will be better, but if you already have a modern TV in the living room, especially if it's a nice and big one, you might aswell just use that.

The colors. They seem a bit off, I don't want scanlines because I sit too close to my monitor for them to be useful

>> No.10486243

>>10486224
This is with crt-guest-advanced, right? There's a lot of parameters on it that can affect the colors. You can mess with the Scanline Saturation parameter, for instance. By default it's set to 0.5, but lowering it to 0.0 will make the colors a bit more neutral. There's also all the gamma settings, but I don't really recommend fucking with those unless you know what you're doing. If you want, you can also try out the CRT profile and LUT colors parameters, as well as the Color Temperature parameter, and see if you get more pleasing colors with those. Remember, if at any point you think you fucked around too much with a parameter and find it looks like ass, press spacebar on a parameter and it will reset it to default settings.

>> No.10486254

It's crt-guest-advanced. Set Magic Glow to 1.0, Mask Strength to maximum, Bloom Strength to -0.75, Scanline type to -1.0, Scanline Shape Bright Pixels to 0.90, Scanline Falloff to 0.10, CRT Mask to 9.0, and Base Mask to 0.5. I believe that should get you that look.

It's at the bottom of the CRT Mask Options section. It simulates the very slight excitement of otherwise unlit phosphors in a CRT around black areas of the screen. I solved it, a few CRT shaders actually worked, but didn't look all that good... so I went with a LCD shader instead until I found one that looked nice and didn't hurt the performance, and I did, it just feels appropriate for playing on a handheld, even if I'm emulating console titles, the LCD grid look is nice.

To be frank, I made way too many changes to tell you exactly what I did, though it mostly revolved around putting most of the Grade stuff on default, as well as just about everything dealing with gamma. If indeed you touched little other than setting it to no-scanline mode, then it seems that mode isn't really made to work exactly like regular mode, and Sonkun's preset is therefore not made to work with it without fucking up colors and such.

They are. The brightest modern displays are eye-searingly bright and can absolutely push more than enough nits through HDR to match CRTs, even with a shader. The real obstacle is motion clarity. Shaders cannot do anything about that, so it's fully up to the display to deliver some kind of strobing solution for that, but of course, that halves brightness, at which point probably only the highest-end displays can use both a CRT shader together with strobing and still remain acceptably bright, and even then I'm not sure.

You don't need 8K for anything other than perhaps accurate shadow mask emulation. 4K+HDR already does an admirable job. Hell, even 1080p already does quite well for aperture grille emulation, and might even be sufficient with proper HDR support with lots of brightness.
>>10499328
You can turn that off, you know. The reason they don't do that by default is that then you're left with full strength mask emulation, which depending on the mask type being emulated turns off at least half or more of the pixels in your panel, which of course means it dims the shit out of the image. This is where the panel itself has to pull its weight, and where good HDR support can make up for the loss in brightness, especially coupled with a shader like Sony Megatron, which does none of the things Royale and such do because it expects the display itself to provide the necessary brightness.

>> No.10500202

Well, it's a regular feature in shaders for a reason: a lot of people do like it. You have to be careful with it, though, and be mindful that at the end of the day it's but a facsimile of an actual physical phenomenon, not something that is drawn on the screen. A dash of it is fine IMO, along with a bit of glow (particularly Guest's Magic Glow implementation), though when I use them, I turn up the mask strength all the way up on both so they're as unobtrusive and undistracting as possible.

Yes, I was thinking about standard displays that don't have HDR and are used for the majority of users.

If you have HDR, just use Sony Megatron shaders.

Well, it depends, since you're using standalone emulators then naturally that'll depend on each emulator and how they handle shaders, mGBA is pretty much just like RetroArch for it's LCD ones, though I found RetroArch easier to switch between them to choose which one I wanted, the UI was just better for me, though I know many might disagree... it'll depend on the emulator.

Still, just asking, why is it that you don't want to use RetroArch? I started using it a few months ago, got the cores of the standalone emulators I used and it's been quite seamless for me so far.

This game did have a japanese port anyhow. I like the palette variation sometimes.
Also, that vignetting and lack of brightness is making the scanlines appear on bright colors instead of merging together which makes the image too dark. I'm guessing your monitor has a higher brightness setting?
