Why do you make this thread every single day and the hidden gems /vr/ doesn't know about must be pretty rare nowadays. You could say to a normie that something like Burnout 3 is a hi-quality hidden gem if they never played it but everyone here has played it.

Drakan ancient gates great game but the lack difficulty modes and new game plus was disappointing. Its good for one playthrough and thats it. There's a point of no return locks out backtracking. Really needs a remaster with some QOL improvements.

I'm watching a 1994 tv show and they have a retro game corner there. However they use that term for any game that's not brand new, including those that came out earlier the same year. Kinda weird knowing that 94 games were retro even in 94, at least according to Famitsu

Times were different. New tech was usually so much better every year that everything older than 6 months was obsolete. Games were no different, if you were keeping up with the jones you wanted the newest thing, it was very class oriented consumerism. If you didn’t play goldeneye when it came out, what, do you live under a rock anon? Anybody lower class back then did not have all the new tech, they had to choose what they spent their limited money on, Now even homeless people have laptops and iPhones. Once consoles and computers became synonymous (7th gen) and the bottleneck of computer processors happened, things kind of died down and people started to look back at retro with a different lense.

>> No.10478496 [DELETED]

>>10478481
It's pretty clear cut. The PS2 was the first console released specifically advertising the ability to play both new (PS2) and retro (PS1) games. This included PS1 releases after the PS2 hardware.

So your argument is "PS2 wasn't called retro on release"? Neither was PS1, in the 94 show I'm watching it's being called a next gen system. So I guess we'll have to call it that forever now because things don't change

>> No.10478536 [DELETED]

>>10478525
PS2 wasn't retro on release, isn't retro now, and will never be retro. Just as The Beatles will never be classical music, even a thousand years from now.

>> No.10478589 [DELETED]

>>10478536
The difference is that classical refers to a specific and immutable period in music history, while retro just means something that was created (x) years ago and is now considered old or dated by most people.
The Beatles will never be classical music because they weren't part of the classical period of music. The PS2 will be (in fact already is) considered retro because it's seen as an old, outdated console.

This is how language works. You can't keep changing the definition of retro, ending up in a situation where almost every single game ever made is "retro."

>> No.10478762 [DELETED]

>>10478674
>you can't keep changing the definition of retro
Ironic. Retro means something made in the present that emulates characteristics of something from the past. The definition we all use is already changed.
Anyway I'd really like to see a source that states "retro means before 2000" like you've claimed.
>ending up in a situation where almost every single game ever made is "retro"
You frame it as if it's a problem. Every game is or will be retro. Pong is a retro game now. In 50 years, Tears of the Kingdom will be considered retro. There's nothing wrong with that.

Guess I'll create a Stardew Valley thread on this retro board, since it's what the word means.
Things not conforming to your made up view that "retro means games and consoles released before 2000" is not the destruction of meaning. You can't dream something up and complain when reality doesn't cater to your every whim.
