10302635 No.10302635 [Reply] [Original]

How does this little guy compare to a SEGA Saturn controller and a SEGA Genesis 6-Button controller? Personally I find that it doesn't look as sleek, and it having smaller, almost non-existant, handles, and a smaller size, makes me worried... is this one good?

I like it but Bluetooth has a bit of input lag so either pick the one with the dongle or use it plugged in

This one is pretty good. I have trouble finding Genesis controllers in good shape and this one of the only good third party controllers that I'd recommend at all. The d-pad and buttons feel good.
Maybe there's input lag, but I don't notice it. Not a genesis game, but I've used 8bitdo's adaptor and a wireless Playstation controller to beat games like Super Star Wars and DKC, so it hasn't stopped me from beating challenging games.

>> No.10303214

>>10302635
It's lighter than an original genesis controller and the curved edges makes it feel very different.
The d-pad is a bit mushy, but apparently that can be fixed by putting a ball bearing underneath it. I haven't tried it though.

In general I don't think it's a bad controller. I've used it for a few 2D games and I didn't have any serious issues with it. But if you're expecting it to compare to original controllers then you might be disappointed.

Bluetooth is the only reason to buy this, if you're keeping it plugged in just go for the Retro-Bit USB controller instead, better yet just get the actual Genesis controller made for the Mini or the Switch

>> No.10303551

I have the non Bluetooth one because it has less input lag and I even think it’s a bit cheaper. I like it.

>> No.10303578

The 2.4g one has like 1ms lag and the Bluetooth one has like 6ms lag, both wired. If you pick the 2.4g one get the white color because that one's guaranteed to have USB-C instead of micro USB. Another thing is that there are button combos to do things like switch between DInput and XInput and have the Dpad register as an analog stick or an actual Dpad that aren't listed in the manual at all.

I bought the 8bitdo one quite a few years ago now and it has lasted and served well (very rare for 3rd party, they generally break fast). I don't generally recommend the brand, just sharing a good experience with their Genesis controller. Their SNES style ones are garbage in my experience. Fortunately I have two genuine SNES controllers in good shape, but I was messing around with the 8bitdos on Windows.

Every time I see this controller it reminds me that it pretty much looks like the definitive classic Sega controller. Like this is what they would have came up with themselves eventually. I'd guess though had they known what the snes console specs and the controller were going to look like they'd probably have came up with the six button or maybe even a saturn like controller sooner.

Now yes this is just going on how it looks of course. I don't know how it actually plays in hand never have used it.

>> No.10304894

It's better than the RetroBits. The D-Pad is pure sex. If you have old controllers you can donate the parts from, the RetroBits are good since the parts are interchangeable, but out of the box they feel pretty shitty.

>> No.10305860

It has been adequate enough for my 6 button needs.
I even use it for the pc decomps of sonic games.
Annoyingly the retro engine games don't pick up the D-Pad the same way as sonic 3 air though, so I do have to do a little mode switching when I switch between them, but I guess that's a plus for the controller compatibility that it can swap between the d pad being a d pad, left analog or right analog.

It sucks. The d-pad pretty much killed it, there's no real pivot in the center so games like Contra that make heavy use of diagonals will be badly hampered. If you crouch, you're more likely to activate diagonals when you didn't want to and walk into enemy fire. Shill reviewers make no mention of this issue either which is doubly frustrating...
I haven't used the Retro-Bit licensed Saturn pads but they might be better

8BitDo doesn't have good Bluetooth, their 2.4ghz ranges from good to better than Bluetooth. Using a wired connection, the 2.4ghz M30 model is about 1ms lag. Sometimes, like with the Neo Geo CD controller, their 2.4ghz connection is better than wired.

>>10304218
The Retro-Bits have a worse pivot and there's a longer history of QC issues with them. They have the superior Bluetooth implementation but they don't produce those anymore.

they are fine and have the same quality or better than the m30.
both are excellent choices, just the m30 has more features with more input lag while the wired retrobit one is pretty much lag free while having the issue of being wired.
don't buy the retrobit bluetooth, they cost too much and have issues with the dongles, i don't like to play wired so this isn't an issue for me.
the dpad is of the same quality with an edge for the retrobit tho.
the buttons on both will shit the bed by being conductive pads, be careful with them and buy on aliexpress 10 six button controller pads for the future.

>> No.10307348

>>10306943
the pivot is ironically more accurate to the six button, the plastic pivot in them is pretty spot one to what a og six button is.
the pivot blame is caused by people picking the blue controller rather than the black one, the black controller has a pivot while the blue doesn't by the blue one being based on a real sf2 controller sold on the 90s with no pivot, making for an awful piece of shit for everything by not having a point of reference, this is bullshit but it isn't explained on any pages aside from testing the controllers by yourself and seeing that they put the effort on the most autistic of details on the worst way possible.
in general just get the black one which has a pivot which feels like the real 6 button thanks to having a real pivot and not the blue trash.

>>10306927
Interesting, because I've had no issue with that and I'm *very* fussy about accidental diagonals with d-pads. I don't know if they revised it or what. My only complaint with the d-pad is that it's slightly too mushy.

I'll make sure to make a post about how the D-Pad feels once I get it, I ended up buying it because the RetroBits are way harder to find, and more expensive, where I live. I hope it turns out fine, I also went with the Bluetooth in this occassion due to it being on sale in many stores, si cheaper than the 2,4ghz, so my choice ended up being made for me in a way, if it ends up not being so good in the end, then at least it was quite cheap to afford here.

Sorry for late reply. I wasn't really happy with either of my RetroBits out of the box, but I think I've read their quality has improved and they're basically exact replicas now. My Genesis pad's D-Pad sunk all the way in and felt really weird, so I swapped it out with an OEM part from an old controller and now it feels perfect and is my preferred controller. Was never totally happy with the Saturn one due to mushy buttons and a creaky D-Pad, but again, I've read that the quality on those has really improved, so you might not have any issues. The M30, on the other hand, was flawless for me out of the box, and if it weren't for my nostalgia for the Genesis pad I'd probably be using it. The difference in input lag between the 3 is negligible (in the 1-2ms range iirc), so it really just comes down to build quality and preference.

>> No.10309640

>>10309350
I agree. I got a fairly early retro bit 6 button and it straight up didn't work. C button wouldn't register unless the start button was pressed, and 3 button mode didn't even function. Basically parted it out and reused the rubbers on other projects because the mobo was borked. Got another one a few months back and it works great. I switched to an m30 because I realized how annoying wired controllers are with my setup, but it's a very good player 2 controller.

It's here! I was lucky enough to have it arrive just a few hours ago, when there was a chance it'd be here only in a couple of days. I read the manual it came with and immediately connected it to start playing with RetroArch. I have to say, so far it's a superb controller, a little smaller than I would've liked, but still comfortable, and while it can be a bit awkward to bind keys on RetroArch, due to its UI taking in consideration only traditional layouts with a diamond instead of the 6-Button layout, it still clicked soon enough, now I've setup all cores to have the controls I want, and it's lovely so far.

I haven't had any issues with input lag so far, it's quite responsive, and man... I really missed using a 6-Button layout like this, and the SEGA D-Pad I used to love so much, with easy diagonals, to me this just feels like... home. My only complaints are the size, and mapping keys on RetroArch so far.

Bought this baby.

Never used an actual Neo Geo controller, only bought it for the arcade style mini-stick.
Was disappointed that the stick didn't feel light and clicky as I had expected but it feels very natural when actually playing something with it.
Face buttons are really nice and big and clicky - best ones I've ever encountered on a gamepad.

Despite the battery it's very light which combined with the hard rigid plastic case makes it feels very much like an old classic controller.
Also like that they now just give you everything combined in one model: bluetooth, 2.4G, wired

the Retrobit is as close to OEM you can get once once you swap the membranes, d-pad, and buttons from a real Saturn controller.

>> No.10326045

>>10325681
At that point you might as well just swap the Retrobit board into an original controller, it'd be the same shit.

It's interesting that this is pretty much the father of most modern video game controllers, and it's barely remembered by most.

I'm not enjoying mine much... often my inputs just don't register, and diagonals, which are a highlight of any SEGA D-Pad, don't work at all.

I took the 8BitDo pill and I regret it, /vr/os...

Its great. Visually it looks like something out of a 3D printer. Feels nice in the hands though. But where the M30 clearly surpasses any other controller on the planet, including the OG Saturn controllers, is the satisfying D-Pad. They use thicker, higher quality rubber membranes here. Resulting in a faster, and clickier feel. Luck of the draw though. 3 pads were fine. 1 pad was mushy. Once you get the clicky one, its game over for any other controller

I own a bunch of those. Early blue models suck. The C button its permanently stuck on them due to poor design.

So this version is bad and the dpad lacks pivot? But it looks so freakin cool...

I have the 8 button version of that (still wired) and swapped in the D-Pad from an old OEM controller and it feels completely perfect. If you have an old controller for parts, get one. It also has some of the lowest input lag of any controller on the market.

interesting, I was considering it for f-zero 99 since it prefers analog stick inputs but maybe i'll use it for shmups as well.

pulled this out of the parts box just for you. This is the second retrobit controller I've had that had a break in this exact same spot, thanks cotton reboot. Blue tooth wireless one, board to be reused elsewhere. Retrobit controller #1 was a wired model 1 that got the same break on the pad thanks to persistent Devil Engine play. Board was repurposed in a real Saturn pad so I could use a real pad with quality parts on modern devices. Retrobit #3 is a 2.4 ghz that's still working fine, probably because I was only using it for a genesis mini I played for a few afternoons.

2/3 retrobit controllers got the d-pad break and before the break they were close enough to a Saturn pad. Real pad feels deeper, gummier, like you can really sink your thumb into each direction. Retrobit pad feels shorter, shallower and with stronger feedback of clicking into each direction. Retrobit buttons feel firmer and clicker, the updated models also have a bit of clickyness like the original shoulder buttons but not as much.

Why did I buy 3 controllers if 2 broke? BT retrobit has some of the lowest latency available for switch controllers, 2.4ghz is decent too. If the pad broke and retrobit didn't send me a replacement I could just repurpose them for other controllers.

see this for latency comparisons on switch

M30 pad is gummier than the retrobit but still lacks the feeling of depth, probably because neither of them have real rubber guts to squish through. Buttons are a little softer than the retrobit and the latency of the 2.4ghz is a little worse than retrobit's offerings. Better ergonomics than retrobit imo.

I prefer my modded Saturn controller but all my friends prefer using the retrobit or m30 since they have firmer feedback. If you don't mod or care about latency m30 wins.

I know... but I don't regret it either, afterall there weren't many options where I live besides this, if I had found the 2.4GHz one for the same price it would've been a no brainer, but most other pads in this style I could get here were at least 4 times the price they're selling this one at, it's just way too cheap compared to everything else and so it made sense to go for this one, I'm alright with it.

P.S. I still appreciate the warning and advice you gave me, you're cool, so take this chocolate milk.

I bought a Hori xbox (360? xbone?) gamepad thinking it'd be a good quality and it got stick drift within 3 weeks. What a piece of shit.
