What's the deal with Chrono Cross?

What was Square thinking? Why was it so bad? I've always wondered just what went on behind the scenes that caused them to go from the greatness of Chrono Trigger to the abomination that is Cross. The gameplay sucks. The magic system sucks. The story sucks. The characters, all 10,000 of them, suck. What was the thought process going in to making Cross? Did Square exclusively hire people that hated Trigger to work on this? Did they only hire people that have never made or even played RPGs before? This game has always baffled me, it's objectively bad, and I'm convinced that people only "like" it for nostalgic reasons.

I remember liking this game when I played it, albeit not as much as Trigger or other PS1 JRPGs. But it didn't really stick with me. Felt like a 6/10 JRPG with music that makes it an 8/10 but then a battle theme that drops it back down to a 5/10. Definitely not a game I'd ever feel like replaying.

Really impressive 3D gameplay visuals, good sound fonts (albeit terribly used) and an interesting concept (executed in quite possibly the worst ways imaginable).
