might sound like a cope, but I don't feel like going back to DS at all, though I've played the fuck out of it in high school. I 100%ed the biggest games (Castlevania DoS, SM64DS, NSMB, etc.), and played just about everything I wanted on it back in the day. I only regret not beating DQM Joker on it, it got translated a bit too late.
I did go back to 2 games: Picross 3D (it's fucking great btw) and Contact (I do dream of 100%ing it, but it's very grindy by any standard). the rest though? I'm having a hard time thinking what DS games I'd even want to play now. only exception would be JRPGs and strategies, I wasn't a huge fan of the genres back then but now I do like them more. though it's not like DS has that many JRPGs and strategies anyway.

Not the best but certainly up there. 4th and 5th gens were the culmination of basically all elements of a game, 6th gen would give us some similar stuff with refined controls and more advanced visuals but less content, and later gens are all about stretching out minimal content and adding as much microtransactions as inhumanly possible.

Supremely comfortable to actually play on, killer shoulder buttons, nice big screen without being too big + excellent clarity and balance (just wish it was a touch more saturated), best speakers on any arm handheld and it's not even close well, the KTR1's were at least close, but that's the only one, feels lighter than handhelds that objectively weigh less thanks to ace weight distribution, d-pad in correct location, great chip even if Retroid and 405 Gamma get a little more juice out of it.

Downsides are d-pad lotto (some get false diagonals some don't) and the sticks are still completely fucked due to retardedly aggressive cardinal snapping. If you feel like taking the chance, I'd suggest going through their Aliexpress store so that you can send it back if you think you got a shit d-pad.

Yes, it's true. Because it doesn't emulate the CPU, binary code is run natively. PSP's and PSX's CPUs share architecture. It just emulates the GPU, which it is more than powerful enough to do. The compatibility is almost perfect and the input lag is very low. It's the same thing as running GBA games through GBARunner2 on 3DS.

And? Better argument is that it's missing L2, R3 and right analog stick, which is why something like RG353PS is still better at PSX emulation for me personally. But if you want low input lag, PSP is basically your only option. I guess there are handhelds that use actual PS2 hardware (which includes the necessary PSX CPU), but the availability is low and the quality is poor.

I was thinking about this recently, after that ETA Prime video. Obviously, these handhelds must be using PS2 slim boards specifically. But, only early slims had PS1 hardware inside. Starting with SCPH 75XXX, the PS1 chip was replaced with another that turned PS1 compatibility from 50% emulation 50% native to 100% emulation, which was worse.

Which boards specifically are these handhelds using? A mixture?

But those slims don't use it for running PSX games for some reason and emulate it instead. Fat PS2s use that IO controller to run PSX software. Maybe it's just a matter of BIOS? Come on, that's bullshit. PSP has a single-core CPU running at 300MHz. It cannot do N64 well, it cannot do Dreamcast at all, it certainly cannot even approach PS2 or Gamecube. Modern chinkhelds have multi-core CPUs running at 2-3GHz. RP2S is a $100 device with perfect Dreamcast emulation, as well as some PS2 and Gamecube. I like officialhelds too (I own a 2DS XL), but to say that chinkhelds haven't massively progressed in a decade is just plain wrong.

My ktr1 came in today. Fairly disappointed with it. I don't have much experience with emulating on android, but even trying to run GBA games with a basic LCD shader makes it drop frames/skip audio. And the button/dpad quality is pretty bad

Try using gl. Mali GPUs have terrible drivers and retroarch can shit the bed with them. mGBA runs flawlessly on my KTR1 in retroarch using gl. Most cores I found don't even boot in Vulkan.
I ended up doing the hole reinforcer mod on my dpad (although not in the usual way). Doing that and giving it some time to break in, it's actually quite nice, although the complete lack of pivot is weird.

Just the 0.34" increase in 4:3 space on the 3/3+ makes a surprisingly big difference imo. Of course then you have to cope with big black bars on the side. In general, portable electronics made a huge jump after 2008-2013 after iPhone was launched. This goes for everything. And yes, this applies to chinkhelds too. They pretty much have the hardware of budget phones of today.

I still think DS had more than enough great games though, they're just not very replayable. My faves were: Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, Rhythm Heaven, Osu!, Contact, Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker, Dragon Quest: Rocket Slime, Jump Ultimate Stars, Phoenix Wright games, Picross 3D, NSMB (yes, it's good). Also worth a mention: Dragon Quest IX, WarioWare: Touched & DIY, Picross DS, Kirby Canvas Curse, Advance Wars games. IMO all of these are very worthy of beating at least once.

The difference is, at least for the popular chinkhelds, Linux CFW is expected. Android CFW is very, very rare. A few things:

1. Research what you need to do to your handheld before buying it.
2. Your sd card isn't bricked, same thing happened to me but the proof is that it still works in the console. Windows Explorer can't properly interact with some Linux stuff and it won't show up even though your PC makes a chime when it's plugged in.
3. If you put it in an android device and plug into PC or just use a different program (SD Card Partitioner or whatever it's called as an example recognizes the card even if WE does not), you should be able to access files.

The pixel and battery problems are unfortunate though, no workaround there without opening it up.

It has a powerful chipset and the main screen is 7" meaning there is plenty of room to grip it. Also, one more thing you hadn't considered. Reaching the shoulders/triggers should be prioritised for 3D games, it would be more difficult from the lower position. This is why on other GPD models the dpad is aside the analogue. They put it lower to accommodate the 4:3 screen but compromised ergonomics.
One solution might be the buttons on the back performing a shoulder style function while using the dpad. But I'm sure the reach issue isn't that bad.

The screen is the main reason I use my phone. Thanks to the AMOLED, I can play games in any aspect ratio and it won't look weird because the blacks blend into the bezel. Gameboy Advance. The OG version, not the clamslop SP. 20+ hours of battery life on 2 AA batteries and it can play games for every Gameboy system ever released. You can just take a couple of extra batteries in a bag depending on how long your camping trip will take. Buy a Boba Fett flashcard so that you don't have to carry a bunch of carts, but remember that those only take SD cards of up to 2GB (which isn't a big problem because Gameboy games are a couple of MB at most). The display is not backlit but sunlight should be plentiful since you're camping.
