Secret best RPG on the NES. It's easy to mistake for a super dry Koei simulation game but it's actually a very breezy and fun RPG with great music. Unlike most 8-bit RPGs it's very fast. Your characters buzz around the world map and battles are quick. You can also recruit enemy generals in random battles which is a fun touch. Keeping all the Chinese character and tactics (basically, magic) names straight can be a bit of a pain but once you get past that it's very enjoyable.

I always thought the auto-battle feature was pretty fast as it just completely cuts out all the text. What dialogue there is in battles scrolls pretty fast. I think it's much better than the DQ's and FF's on the NES in that regard.

Yeah, 2001 if I'm not mistaken. Super promising game with a huge open world, relatively decent story, lots of revolutionary design choices and even permadeath for party members, but fuck me every single inch of gameplay is so tedious and unenjoyable. Every time I get in the mood to give it another shot and I think of that immediately attractive feeling of going on an adventure in those early RPG's, I put the cartridge in and make it a whopping 30 minutes before it's time to turn the fucking thing off again.

It would happily remain forgotten in the back of my mind except that every single time someone mentions hidden gems, n64 games or RPGs, it somehow manages to have SOMEONE recommending it and I can only explain it away with possibly nostalgia. Otherwise, there's nothing here.

If you're hardcore enough you could try with Retroarch's AI translation tool (press a button to translate text on screen) if you're patient enough for it (takes a second every time), it doesn't always work well (or at all) but it works well enough to make it playable + there is a guide on Gamefaqs which lists item names which is really helpful.

Sounds nice, but can I turn off auto-mapping and such? I like to play older games autistically by hand-made maps and such. But it would be much better if monsters gave you enough gold. That was my biggest problem with the game IIRC. I was trying to get some of the basic equipment and I was already around level 10 and felt overpowered by that point. That should balance the game out a little bit.
