Some consoles in Japan simply made money on porting existing games to it. The only development they had control of was Virtua Fighter. Capcom and SNK had a great relationship with Sega. Sega looked at 3D from a VR experience perspective so they weren't thinking about polishing platformers with polygon effects and certainly not on RPGs.

This statement is beyond true. I’ve played (actual oem hardware) and emulated almost every system from PS1/Saturn era to earlier but never N64. It’s just not that great. NES and SNES are better. >and sega of amercia being petty asshole that would rather see the company burn than follow what the japanese told them to do.
You mean telling the japs that the Saturn was terrible hardware design which would sink the company in manufacturing expenses, be super developer-unfriendly and ultimately fail against the competition for being a piece of shit that couldn't handle 3D games that the N64 and Playstation could run with ease, prompting them to rush a better system out (Dreamcast) even in your glorious japan where the Saturn supposedly was a success (but not really tho lol) to try to save face and make up for the Shiturn being a disastrous trainwreck?

>The 32X was inconsequential at worst.
It split their resources and the original plan was incredibly stupid. Originally it was to be 32X for the US and EU until about 1996/1997 and then launch the Saturn when it was cheaper. When 32X was dead on arrival, Sega of Japan kneejerked and had Sega of America rush out the Saturn to sweep the 32X under the rug to prevent anymore damage.

As a result Sega of America was horribly behind with the Saturn when it came to having launch titles ready, developers ready, documentation, devkits, etc. ready for third parties, and more. If they had just focused on the Saturn, things could have turned out a lot differently. The 32X did by far the most damage to the company in the long run. It damaged consumer confidence, and it horribly damaged any chance the Saturn had for success outside of Japan.
>Not having a decent 5th gen console hurt Sega harder in the long run.
They had a decent 5th gen console. It's called the Saturn. It's no where near as weak as you make it out to be.
>You mean telling the japs that the Saturn was terrible hardware design...
Too much to quote here but that's not what happened. Kalinske was against the Saturn purely on cost, not the hardware or anything else. He was convinced no console over $200 would sell, and in 1993 Saturn was looking to be about $500. But by the time it launched in 1994 it was about $400 and by the time it should have launched in fall 1995 in the US it would be about $300. So that really wasn't as big of an issue.

As for the Dreamcast doing poorly in Japan, what did the most damage there was dropping the Saturn early. That pissed off third party developers and consumers.

I'm finding plenty on N64. The main thing is you have anchor games on N64 like Mario 64, Zelda, 007/Perfect Dark that people grind thousands of hours over time, we keep coming back.

Saturn seems cool, I wanna get into it. It seems to not have any anchor games though? A badass game to grind and grind while you play some 10-20 hour tops side games along with it. Those screens are from Lunar 2 which uses standard Cinepak. No VCD card required.

The main issue with Lunar Silver Star Story's original release isn't that it uses Cinepak, it's that they tried to cram it all on one disc which meant the FMVs had to be set to a much lower quality to fit. Even the PS1 version doesn't do this and splits the game across multiple discs.

There's so much text and animations that it's ridiculously long even if you mash through the text.
The whole levelup system is also pretty fucked unless you specifically find places to abuse it, meaning you have to grind for 90% of the game so the last level isn't unplayably hard. I just always pick the dude with the sword and the bottom most route where he gets an upgrade that adds a fixed +6 to all stat, making the game suck less.

Saturn isn't that hard to program for. It's mostly all C and both the official and unofficial libraries aren't bad to deal with. For most homebrew devs that just want to make a 2D game it's pretty easy to work with.

To give Bernie Stolar any credit, the Sega Saturn was already a train wreck before he got there. Any sane business man would have made the same call in discontinuing the system in 1997. Retailers were not supporting the Saturn well, third parties were not either. The system cost too much to manufacture, and they couldn't discount it like the PS1 and still make profit. By the time the N64 was released in September 1996, the Saturn in the NA market was not looking good. There's a reason why Kalinske jumped ship in 1996. I think Sonic X-Treme was the last straw for him. But I think even Kalinske knew that the Saturn was a train wreck after E3 1995 and announcing an early launch. The Dreamcast was a nice piece of hardware, for what it was worth. it had some flaws. But PS2 hype was just too big.

Loved the Saturn when I had one. Daytona was always a mixed bag with its 20fps performance. I was someone who put countless dollars into Datona USA arcade machines. I was happy to get the game with my Saturn. I still enjoyed it too, but iooked rough. Undeniably up against the PSX early games. Virtua fighter 2 was fantastic. Had the three game pack in. Virtua cop was fun without the stunner. Back in the day I could never find a Stunner. Anywhere. Unless I ordered one from a magazine for a stupid price. Also love Panzer games, liked Fighting Vipers and Mega Mix. Sega Rally is great. Liked a lot of other games for it. But being in Canada, I could not find games to buy for it anywhere. Rentals were easier. Unlike the Genesis, which was still easy to find in the mid 90s. It really tanked at retail. It was impressive with 2D sprites and could scale sprites basically like polygons. Which worked best for the hw.

>Daytona was always a mixed bag with its 20fps performance. I was someone who put countless dollars into Datona USA arcade machines. I was happy to get the game with my Saturn.

I want to say that Daytona USA almost seemed like a deterrent to the Saturn, than a selling point. Daytona USA was a popular arcade machine in NA market. Daytona USA was probably still one of the best selling games on the system, and was also a bundled game for a lot of people who bought the system. Even reviewers were critical of how it looked. It lacked 2 player mode. Which was one of the biggest draws of the arcade game. 2-4 player Daytona cabs were pretty popular. Rare to find a single player cab. The one time I did, the game had Daytona Turbo Edition hack:
https://youtu.be/uti1pOVeVY4?t=11
But, I guess Ridge Racer PS1 didn't have multiplayer either. But RR Revolution has the link cable support. Sega did try to release their own Daytona USA revolution with Daytona USA CCE. This version does feature 30fps gameplay in single, better draw distance. News cars, tracks and two player split screen. And even 4-player online via net link. But the game was built on the Sega Rally engine, and the game had odd handling. Which makes it a bit of a monkey's paw update. Like someone wished that Daytona could be remade on the Sega Rally engine. For me its the way that the cars don;t handle well around corners. It's hard to drift around corners.

I do think CCE does look better in ways. It has a less of a wide angle camera. Draw distance is good. game moves smoother. But you can see the player struggle with CCE controls.

It's pretty interesting, because SCUD started as an independent comic book series that was picked up by Image Comics. It's a pretty obscure comic these days, about a robot assassin named SCUD who was purchased from a giant vending machine. The Sega Saturn game was the only spin off piece of media to come from SCUD. I think the game is interesting and has some cool elements to it. game is not perfect.

The PS1's greatest strength is its fuckhuge software library. Ask 10 different people what the 10 best games on the Nintendo 64 are and they'll all tell you the same shit (Mario 64, Zelda, Goldeneye, Banjo-Whatever, etc). Ask 10 different people the same question about the PS1 and you'll probably get 10 completely different lists.

The Saturn's library isn't huge, but if you're into really good arcade ports, unique/experimental games, and Japanese deep cuts its got a lot of stuff to enjoy.

I Aldo would add Tomb Raider. I feel like if the PSX port didn't exist and Core made Tomb Raider a Saturn exclusive. It would be mentioned more as an impressive looking game. I had the Saturn Tomb Raider, completed it. I loved the game and was impressed by the large enviroments. There were times when the Saturn was hitting single digit fps. But I do not think Core made a bad port. All things considering, it still is one of the best looking 3D platformer adventure type games for the Saturn. And still is. The PS1 version still runs at a much more consistent 30fps, still has nicer lighting and is higher resolution too. But I an sure that the Saturn was used as the lead development system for the first TR game. The devs had to work around the Saturn quad polygons and hw limitions first, and port to the other systems. Laras model looks yhe chunkiest in the first game, because the Saturn model was used as the base for all versions. But all the of the TR games from TR2 onwards for the OG series targeted the PS1 as lead console.

It's an interesting game overall. That seems to jump; between a few different genres of action. It has a RoboCop vs terminator vibe sometimes. And there are those FPS sections that could also be played with a Stunner, if you had one. I did not. The devs went with a pre-rendered look, because it was still popular at the time. But, I like that they developed a 2D game, overall with some 3D scaling elements. I wish there were more games like it on the Saturn; as in 2D action/ platformer games with sprite scaling elements.

I think Tomb Raider on the Saturn was a really good benchmark for the system overall. The game could sometimes reach 30fps. But generally hovered around 20, with dips to the 10's in the really large and open areas. The Saturn version does have less shaky polygons, but has 256 gradient lighting, while the OS1 is like 16-32bit. I think the software rendered PC port was also 256 colour gradient lighting as well. Unless you ran the game with hardware acceleration of some kind. Like 3DFX Glide or PowerVR. It even had Trident card support. The PC version could hold a steady 30fps in software with some frame dips. But also could run up to 800x600 or 1024x768 in hardware mode. The Saturn port also has more sprites in sports.

I am as white as driven snow but the last time I was in an arcade I got the absolute shit kicked out of me in three sets of Children of the Atom by a black guy who looked like he was straight out of central casting for "generic background inner city thug". I'm a Cyclops shitter and am pretty good but he kicked my ass so badly with Psylocke that I legitimately think I shamed my ancestors. I was about to leave before he got there, but if I had had some more time that day I would have stuck around and tried to learn something from him.

>>10011196
Tomb Raider on the Saturn has some bad framerate hits. They solved this on the PS1 by increasing the fogging like crazy (it's so bad that there are a lot of places in the PS1 version where you can't even see the other side of the room you are in). The framerate bump is nice (even if the PS1 version also drops in a lot of areas), but it takes away some of the grandeur in some of the big vistas when you can't even see them (namely areas like The Colloseum). The game is amazing, but its honestly probably a bit too ambitious for the 5th console generation. A lot of levels in TR2 were comprised of much smaller rooms with significantly more visblocking materials as a result.

The PS1 version is the easiest version to play these days though, since an emulated PS1 version is a lot easier to run, can be upscaled, and has much better controller support compared to running the PC version. I have a Saturn so I've never messed with Saturn emulation, but it might be worth checking out just to see how the game plays when its at a steady 30fps all the time.

I'm well aware that the only way to have a Saturn gf is by idoctrinating a girl. Well, like any hobby, girls get their taste from their boyfriends.
Pic related openly admitted that it was her boyfriend who gave her the idea to do this weird "saturn gal" act, and also most of the stuff on the photos are his bf's and not her's (and anyway her whole taste is because of his bf).
That kinda sucks because it means that if you DO encounter a girl who likes retro, it's because their ex-bg idoctrinated them to do so.

I hate that faggot too but saturnfags are delusional. The Gundam trilogy are the only half decent game on it and if Stellar Assault SS doesn't turn out to be worth the wait for the translation then it's officially a shit console.

Nah I actually gave it a chance. Bulk Slash was easy, Wing Arms was easy (and janky), Sega Rally is inferior to the PS2 port and Daytona's ports are pathetic. You can seethe over this if you want but history has a winner.

>Yeah nah the PS1 library was huge but 90% of it is complete garbage.
Given Playstation got nearly 8000 titles, I'd say having 800 good titles is a pretty fine deal.

Funny how you fuckers never complain about NES/SNES/Wii shovelware. Of course the most successful console of any given gen is gonna get more shovelware. Pointing out this as a negative doesn't make you smart but the contrary.

>Sega Rally is inferior to the PS2 port
I'd sure hope the PS2 could handle a port of an arcade game that ran on $15,000 hardware better than a $400 home console from 1994.

That said, this is kind of dumb logic to use when talking about retro consoles because if we start including newer ports and compilations we can nullify massive amounts of any retro system's library. When discussing the SNES no one says Street Fighter II doesn't count as a good game in it's library simply because there's newer ports and compilations available on more powerful hardware. No one says you can't include Time Crisis or Tekken 1, 2, or 3 in lists of good PS1 games simply because there's better ports of the arcade available on PS2. So why is this rule applied only to Saturn?

The SNES isn't as bad as the Wii or NES but yeah successful consoles get a lot of shovelware.

What does the N64 have to offer when you eliminate every game that's been ported or re-released on other systems of the time or ones that came later? If we apply this same rule to the N64 the following games can't be counted in it's library because they're available on other systems:

Mario 64 (DS, Wii, Wii U, Switch)
Mariokart 64 (Wii, Wii U, Switch)
Donkey Kong 64 (Wii U)
Ocarina of Time (Gamecube, 3DS, Wii, Wii U, Switch)
Majora's Mask (Gamecube, 3DS, Wii, Wii U, Switch)
Starfox 64 (Wii, Wii U, 3DS, Switch)
F-Zero (Wii, Wii U, Switch)
Diddy Kong Racing (DS)
Goldeneye (Xbox 360, Xbox One, Series S/X, Switch)
Perfect Dark (Xbox 360, Xbox One)
Banjo Kazooie (Xbox 360, Xbox One)
Banjo Tooie (Xbox 360, Xbox One)
Conker (Xbox, Xbox One)
Wave Race (Wii, Wii U, Switch)
Ogre Battle 64 (Wii, Wii U)
Shadows of the Empire (PC)
Rogue Squadron (PC)
Battle for Naboo (PC)
Indiana Jones (PC)
Paper Mario (Wii, Wii U, Switch)
Sin and Punishment (Wii, Wii U, Switch)
Mario Tennis (Wii, Wii U, Switch)
Mario Golf (Wii, Wii U, Switch)
Yoshi's Story (Wii, Wii U, Switch)
Kirby 64 (Wii, Wii U, Switch)
Resident Evil 2 (PS1, Dreamcast, Gamecube, PC, etc.)
Megaman 64 (PS1)
Rayman 2 (PS1, Dreamcast, PS2, PC, etc.)

If we apply this rule to PS1 most games from Squaresoft, Konami, Capcom, Enix, Namco, etc. get thrown out as well.

Not really, in most cases they look cleaner due to the higher resolution and they have far more stable frame rates. Mario Kart 64 is a prime example of that. It's much more enjoyable on Virtual Console or Switch Online than it is on a real N64 because it doesn't tank to single digit frame rates when doing 4 player split screen.
