Started playing this game. Not very far into it, just got up to Old man Balthazar in the desert. It's fun so far, but also lacking something?

Combat - fun, but not very deep. The combo attacks are a nice mechanic but not more than the sum of their parts e.g. 4 Triangle attacks are just 4 Triangle attacks, instead of being a special combo, which means you just spam your strongest attacks every time. Gear combat boils down to spamming X with occasional Booster and Ether use.

World - Beautifully designed, I love the mix of sprite and 3D objects. But: it feels very static. I'm not saying Dragon Quest is a masterpiece of worldbuilding but something I love about those games is that you can actually interact with the world. You can read books on bookshelves, and you're rewarded for exploring with mini medals, chests, and lore. In Xenogears there doesn't seem to be a point to that. I explored the whole of the desert town before going to the bar and got nothing out of it.

Story - I know it's supposed to be wacky and I can definitely tell it will get better. But so far it's a bit dull. Fei is a special kid. Weltall is clearly a special gear. Looking forward to the wackiness.

TL;DR Little disappointed so far. Will give it a few more hours but unless the mechanics of the game radically change I don't see myself making it through the game.

The gameplay is the weakest part, although I do like Gears and the fact you can get in and out of gears mid-combat and even start using kung-fu against giant robots. For exploring, the game is railroaded but there are quite a few things to find by exploring towns and talking to NPCs. Keep going anon, the next bit is good, then it's the low point for the game then it gets much better.

After doing a little looking, it appears I haven't understood everything about the battle system - had no idea you could get out of the gear mid-battle, also didn't understand how the Gear combo system worked, and then the deathblow system.

Good to know that exploring can sometimes pay off, I'll keep at it if I get to remain in a town for longer than 5 minutes with how railroaded the story is!

Will keep at it for now. It's the first time I'm using a shader while emulating (CRT Royale) and it makes Xenogears look amazing.

the game is all about the plot, characters, atmosphere and worldbuilding. don't expect the combat to change. there's really only 2 sidequests in the game, and maybe a handful of optional items to find. the game goes all-in on delivering its narrative to the player and that's fully where the focus remains.

also, do it for her.

Fantastic JRPG, it's a shame they never made the second disc.

Disk 2 is the best part of the game. All plot and boss fights, no filler.

The platforming and constant random encounters filtered me so I stopped midway in Disk 1. Does this shit have jump hacks?

You're silly, if I wanted to read a VN I would probably seek a cliff. It's not even subtle where they ran out of budget/time, even the translation reads like it's machine-generated.
This dumb cunt of a board takes contrarianism to comical levels.

You could always use savestates and not finish the game. I don't know, there's a metric boatload of AR cheats for it, just don't give yourself 9999 of every item or you're gonna get softlocked. There's a golden nugget you need to get later on.

If you don't like VNs, then dont play Xenogears. I love VNs and Xenogears is amazing.

Describing Xenogears as a VN makes a lot of sense, actually. Its gameplay definitely takes a back seat to the narrative, even when comparing it to other JRPGs of its era.

I think the biggest problem here is Xenogear's text speed and you can't auto it like in many VNs. It becomes a massive slog unless you use the emulator to speed things up.
But the complaint where Xenogears being heavily VN oriented is a non issue because at that point, you should be already invested with the writing and story. If you gone through all the random encounters, platforming BS and looking for all the missables, is sitting through the story actually a bad thing? Why are you playing Xenogears otherwise? That's literally one of the biggest reasons why people play JRPGs and why so many of them happen to be also VN enjoyers. I agree the translation quality is terrible, though. At this point, learning Japanese or even using MTL is better than most localizations in general.

Disk 2 actually does a really good job of sticking to the most important parts of the narrative. You skip over a bunch of secondary dungeons but you keep all the most important parts and the best parts of the game are in Disk 2. It's also important to note that Disk 2 isn't all VN mode, after the coolest scene in the game (if not the franchise), the game releases you back to the world map and you can go around, do sidequests/minigames, there's optional dungeons with major story beats, all before going into the final dungeon.

It does nothing of the sort, it substitutes the gameplay with narration, in stark contrast with the rest of the game. It's a remedial measure, and it doesn't do a very good job of anything.

xENOGEARS GET so much better when running an action replay and the Double dialogue speed code and the turn off random encounters code in certain areas.
