This is a thread for creating challenges and limitations on yourself for old games in order to extend the life of the game and have fun. Examples include swordless Link in the original Legend of Zelda and the Green Demon challenge in Super Mario 64.

What are some cool challenges that you know of or made up?

Play Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers in 2-player mode by yourself, carrying the other player through each level.

Bremen Mask challenge in Majora's Mask. Never take the Bremen mask off unless you have to to advance something. It just plays on taking away the B button, so I guess any mask like that would work, but I did it with the ZBremen because you can get it fairly early.

I'm playing Ultima Underworld with minimal strength. This means I can carry far less equipment than a normal character and my combat stats are worse and have a lower cap. I also don't save scum for skillups, don't grind on skeletons and don't barter with fish.
I tried to go full mage but mana regeneration is too low and spells have too many limitations.

My previous challenge was to play finish the Abyss without sleeping which was easily doable.

It's where you go to a level where you can activate a 1-up that chases you, such as Bob-Omb Battlefield, Whomp's Fortress, Cool, Cool, Mountain, and others, and try to collect all eight red coins without the mushroom touching you. It's harder than it sounds.

I beat Resident Evil 1 knife only, no saves.
Also Biohazard3 knife only but with saves.

But for less hardcore RE challenges I recommend playing RE3 (on hard of course) without using powders to make ammo. It's still rather easy though.

For SMB3 I usually play without using any item on the world map prior to entering a stage, meaning that if you die, you have to re-try starting as small mario. That also obviously means no whistle. Also without using mini games for extra lives but that shouldn't matter.

2 players
Each player has to fight with every character in the game

Player with the most wins wins.

Here are a few for Call of Duty's Zombie mode

Can only buy guns from the Mystery Box
Player can not buy a new gun until he is out of ammo (expect what's in the clip)
If a player runs out of ammo (including the clip) he must replace that gun
You must replace the pistol you start with as soon as you have enough points for 2 guns (950 each) and have gotten to the Mystery Box
You can not buy wall weapons (guns)
You buy anything else (grenades, claymores, perks ect.) but only if it doesn't reduce your points below 950
As soon as you reach 7000 points total in a round you have to Pack-a-Punch one of your weapons (your choice).

Goldeneye 007 Mode

Set Enemy Health rather low, but set their accuracy, damage, and reaction rather high.

Toy with it if you have to to set it just right.

Essentially more realistic. You hit anyone in the head they die for sure, other parts 2 or 3 hits. They though can drop a dime on you hard and you gotta be real careful

Any Mega Man game:

Weapon run: After you get a weapon, you cannot ever use the Buster. You can use any weapon besides the Buster.

One-weapon run: Similar, but, you can only use the weapon of the first RM you beat. If you run out of ammo, you're fucked. If the boss is immune to your selected weapon, or if the boss physically cannot be beaten with the full amount of ammo given for your weapon, you can use the Buster (if you need a specific weapon, like the Bubble Lead for Alien Wily in MM2, you can use that). W-Tanks are optionally allowed in games that have them; however, playing with W-Tanks negates the "physically cannot be beaten with the full amount of ammo given for your weapon" rule.

I've only tried the latter once, MMX with the flamethrower. It wasn't that hard, but, it wasn't the best choice as two of the Mavericks and some of the endgame bosses were completely immune and I had to switch to the buster.

Mind posting a pic of your loadout? For some reason after I finished UU I just felt like starting it over again and doing another quick run for fun, since I had everything fresh in my mind. Instead of going on to Labrytinth of Worlds, because I want to get through Ultima 6 and 7 before doing that.

Deus Ex: Roleplaying edition

Choose a personality for JC and don't break it throughout the game. Hard mode: no quickloads.

Examples:

Subtle JC: Holds firm to the idea the if any enemy sees him and is not unconscous or dead within the next 5 seconds, he's not doing his job right. Puts points only in lockpicking, computers, security systems, low-tech weapons, pistols, and maybe one level in swimming. Either quickloads or hides if an alarm is sounded. No using explosives to break doors, containers, or security systems. The Baton is your best friend.

or the flipside

Gung-ho JC: shooty shooty bang bang. Takes the most direct approach to everything; no computer hacking or sneaky subterfuge allowed. Skills allowed: Heavy weapons, demolitions, medicine, environmental training. You can do rifles too, but you can't use the sniper rifle, only the shotguns and assault rifle. Obviously, you must take the GEP gun.

Or just make up your own

Two additional challenges:

The Executioner run: everyone who can be killed must be killed. Follow this guide for who can't be killed, then kill everyone else http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/250533-deus-ex/faqs/28071

The Raiden playthrough: Play as normal until you get the Dragon's Tooth, then never use any other weapon. Make sure to max out Speed Enhancement for hilarious running and jumping and cutting bitches. Not so much a challenge as it is a "fuck around and have fun" run.

Duke Nukem 3D and Doom: No saving, Hardest difficulty with respawning monsters, and try to definitely kill all monsters, that is to say using explosives to kill their corpses so that they don't respawn. It takes to be really smart, like grouping as many corpses as possible at the same and finish them with a pipebomb; or using the flying green drones enemies which explode when they die to kill corpses; or attract enemies in the line of fire of other enemies rockets (Commander's) or Grenades (mini Battlelords). Yeah, I liked robot parties too cuz heavy weaponry always felt cooler than magic. SMG is useful for so long it feels like the Metal Blade of the game.

The 4 monster run is a lot more workable than it sounds. You waste some time grinding for meat to get the creatures you want, but sadly less time than you'd spend leveling up humans or mutants. And of course it's the opposite situation of the robot party; you're swimming in money because you can't equip anything.
