Holy shit I finally beat this game with all six chaos emeralds. Got a game over during the final battle but thankfully had a continue I must've earned in one of the special stages. I'm a Mario fan but Sonic Adventure 1 is one of my absolute favorite games so I thought it's finally time to give the Mega Drive games a try. I thought Sonic games were easy like Kirby but this was pretty damn tough. Amazing game overall. Please tell me Sonic 2 is easier

Congratulations, OP! I recall the 1st time I pulled this off, it took a while, but it's quite rewarding, I'm glad you've managed to do so.

>I'm a Mario fan but Sonic Adventure 1 is one of my absolute favorite games so I thought it's finally time to give the Mega Drive games a try.
Well, if you enjoy Sonic Adventure then the Genesis titles are probably going to be quite an enjoyable time for you, as Sonic Adventure is probably the 3D installment that most closely replicated the originals' mechanics and feel. Also, if you're more of a Mario fan, I definitely recommend the 8bit installments as they feel more like a traditional Mario like platformer, especially Sonic 1, it's also a smoother experience to 100% since in Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 you get the emeralds by exploring levels and finding them.

>I thought Sonic games were easy like Kirby but this was pretty damn tough. Amazing game overall. Please tell me Sonic 2 is easier
I find Sonic 2 to be easier than Sonic 1 if you're just going from start to finish, since the level design it more suited for speed, and you have the spin dash, as long as you use it wisely and press down to roll in slopes you should be fine... if you're going for 100% though, I find it much harder, as the special stages can be much more punishing than Sonic 1, at least you get more attempts at the emeralds, but you'll probably fail them more often too, also the last level is quite tough.

Anyways, good luck!

P.S. If you play Sonic 2 (8bit) then go for the Master System version and stay far away from the Game Gear one, but for Sonic 1 (8bit) either of them is fine.

I'll definitely be giving the Master System games a try after I'm done with the classic games
>if you're going for 100% though, I find it much harder, as the special stages can be much more punishing than Sonic 1
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA FUUUUCK. The special stages in Sonic 1 are legitimately the only thing I didn't enjoy about this game. But the satisfaction of getting the emeralds makes up for it, I just treat those levels as bullshit games like SMB2J or Castlevania 3, the process itself isn't fun, it's all about the satisfaction of overcoming the challenges that.
Also isn't it funny how I grew up with the MegaDrive, played lots of Sega classics like Castle of Illusion and Ristar but not Sonic? And to top that off, I consider myself to be a Sega fan as well because games like Jet Set Radio, Shenmue, Crazy Taxi, Nights and Yakuza are among my favorites too. Hell, I even played Phantasy Star 2-4 and Phantasy Star Portable as a kid but not Sonic games except for Adventure and Heroes
>Anyways, good luck!
Thanks man, gonna need it

I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time, Sonic 1 is probably the best out of all of them, but after playing the Master System version of Sonic 2, instead of the painful Game Gear one, I loved it just as much.

I know what you mean, to be honest I'm fond of Sonic 1's special stages, but that's only because I grew up playing them, so I got used to them quickly, the only one I still despise nowadays is the 3rd one for being too open, and also how you get very few attempts, since there are only 10 levels where you can even access the special stages, let alone get them, and there are 6 emeralds. As for Sonic 2, it really is one of those things that you do for the satisfaction of pulling it off, but I personally don't find it fun, it's something that you pull of once and then never go for it again, since you have nothing to prove, also a any% playthrough is more fun than a 100% one not only because of the frustration in the special stages, but also because Sonic 2 turns you into Super Sonic just by jumping once you have all of the emeralds, and while it is a power rush, it's more fun to play levels normally I think.

Sonic CD was confirmed as a 1-2 interquel and feels the closest to Sonic 1 in some ways so you may want to try that next, though the timeline doesn't really matter all that much and you'd also do fine playing release order. It's suggested to play with the original JP soundtrack your first playthrough, which means the old PC release and its port in Gems Collection aren't recommended (Origins isn't the greatest version either due to SoJ shenanigans).
>>9595535
Not sure which versions OP's playing, so Spin Dash may or may not be a big leap forward in their experience. But every Game Gear game is just better in original Master System form (the later TecToy ones notwithstanding since those were bad GG->MS ports).
>>9595550
Special Stages do progressively get better to a point, but don't be afraid to hit the pause button to take the harder ones more slowly. For Sonic 1+2 8-bit, there are no Special Stages but the Emeralds are instead hidden in each zone, so you treasure-hunt for them for the good ending (for Sonic 2, use a guide, there's a whole true-end zone that's locked behind them).

Sonic games are easy because you essentially have infinite health as long as you manage to grab at least one ring after getting hit. Continues are also pretty easy to get (you get one for grabbing 50+ rings in a special stage, which is pretty easy to do). The Chaos emeralds are there as an extra challenge if you find just beating the game to be too easy.

Kirby's Dream Land on hard is a lot more difficult than Sonic 1 with all 6 emeralds.

I've also just spoiled myself and learned that the 'bad' ending of Sonic 2 is the best one. I'll still go for 100% though because Super Sonic is cool. The best thing about this is that you don't have to collect all of them to experience all of the stages, I hate it when platformers lock certain levels behind collectibles

Japanese Wii VC wads

Well shit, I was going to play CD through the Gems Collection. Guess I'll just emulate the original on PC, thanks

Sonic CD is a bit weird, both Sonic 2 and Sonic CD were developed independently of each other and provide their own take on how to further the gameplay ideas from Sonic 1. But since Sonic CD never got any sequels, Sonic 2's gameplay is what got associated with Sonic, so Sonic CD feels pretty weird and different if you play it after familiarizing yourself with the later games.

>Kirby's Dream Land on hard is a lot more difficult than Sonic 1 with all 6 emeralds
No way, Extra Mode of Dream Land was piss easy for me compared to Sonic 1 with all the emeralds. The only hard part of Dream Land is the boss rush and even then, it checkpoints you before the final boss and you start right before him even if you game over

You'll be happy to learn that the special stages in Sonic CD are optional. The game has two separate ways to get the best ending, either by beating all 6 special stages OR by finding a hidden object in every regular platforming stage.

The latter is a lot lot easier to do, they're not particularly difficult to find.

Make sure to emulate the Japanese or European version, the burger one fucked up the music.

Not sure if the Wii VC version had this problem, but the original Sonic 3 & Knuckles has some content that you can only see/hear by playing Sonic 3 standalone (the biggest difference being the final boss) and then locking on to Sonic & Knuckles to finish the rest of that save file, but compilations routinely mess this up and made them separate save systems entirely. So in an emulator, you can finish Sonic 3, rename the save file to whatever your Sonic 3 & Knuckles game file is called, and then continue the game from where you left off. OR, you could play Sonic 3 & Knuckles through Sonic 3 Angel Island Revisited, which I can't recommend enough. It gives you options to restore Sonic 3 content, QoL improvements, gives you widescreen like the mobile ports, has extensive mod support, and best of all, it brilliantly uses the original ROM. Sonic 2 also has a A.I.R. equivalent called Sonic 2 Community's Cut, so 1 and CD are probably happening sooner or later.

Alright fuck this shit bros I'm practicing special 7 of Sonic 2 with save states on PC, I'm tired of resetting every time and getting through the first 6 just to get one shot at level 7

Not really AIR-related, but Sonic 1 & 2 8-bit have excellent fan-made SMS Remakes that also virtually obsolete the originals (Triple Trouble and (eventually) Chaos also have 16-bit-style fan-game, but they're really more like "what-if" reimaginings if they were more in line with the Genesis games):

And just for reference:

Yes they can be played without Steam, that's just lipservice to throw Uncle Sega off their backs, shhh.

Easier to get continues, they are awarded for regular stages. Special stages are the hardest among the three.
