It depends on what you're looking for. There are less hitscanners than the original maps so there isn't as much peeking around corners or preemptively bombing rooms, but you're expected to be better with TNT to deal with everything else. The Fleshed Out mod floods the screen with enemies if you want something more slaughter-like.

Not really, there will be more use of the blue and green cultists but no Build game will ever match the combat and encounter design possible in Doom and Quake.
Similarly, the type of levels in Build games and how you progress through them isn’t present in Doom or Quake. As the other anon said, it depends on what you’re looking for; also depends on what you got out of Blood itself, and what you were hoping DW would solve.

I liked Blood a lot but after a while a lot of the encounters got both easy and boring except when hitscanners (or cultists in general) were involved. Since everyone was hyping DW to be the second coming of Christ I was hoping to see some more difficult non-cultist encounters and some fun enemy mixes. Blood enemies are no match for Caleb under normal circumstances and they need to be strategically placed in the maps and with other enemies to support them to be exciting. DW instead goes "here a thousand zombies in an open place", which you can deal with two bundles of dynamite.
I will still finish it since I like the map design and the setpieces, but at least now I won't expect too much in the encounter department.

Sounds like the standard “overhype” that results from people who thoroughly enjoyed the original product. Now you know better at least.

You can either use smart positioning or simply mixing enemies to create a harder challenge. Zombies are basically a joke but mixed with some Phantasms and Hellhounds they can create a fun encounter. Maybe make some traps to make movement harder or some explosives so that you can't use dynamite up close. A lot can be done but it's definitely harder than something like DOOM where you can basically throw a couple of Revenants, Pinkies and an Archive in a room and make a somewhat engaging encouter.

It’s manageable a first time through on LB and below, but the first episode is particularly keen on fucking you with the cultist placements if you try it on the harder difficulties: So many are placed aiming at doors and entrances, and Well Done gives them close to perfect accuracy, it also pumps up their spawns and health.
It’s less evil in later episodes, and level authors have been taking note to place more cultists facing the opposite direction of where the player could encounter them. This means they have to turn and fully face Caleb before shooting, giving the player time to react without a decent chance of getting immediately shot at.

There is very little that is "unfair" in Blood. The issue is the player doesn't know all the tricks to take care of Cultists, like how all it takes for them to stop shooting at you for 2 seconds while they'll reposition themselves is a SINGLE bullet coming their way, you don't have that in Doom and Blood, a hitscanner doesn't get stunned that easily in those games.

The problem is that the devs expected the players to get good at a faster rate than most do. And that's precisely why the game is so good.

Your fault for playing like a retard who expect to be able to blindly run around everywhere just because that works in Doom. Build games, and in fact Doom as well, weren't designed to be played like this, gameplay was centered on taking cover around corners.

In this area if you so much as stick your nose out you will see the Cultist on the right side, which will in turn trigger the ones on the left side. Considering you have the advantage of being above them in a niche, you have the choice between throwing dynamites, or waiting for them to get closer to use the shotgun, both types of weapons provided to you just before that.
