They certainly do have less latency, they can have zero buffering for inputs, video and audio which software emulators can't really do. Whether that amounts to more than a frame or two in ideal cases, idk.
As for accuracy, the difference is definitely overstated. Software emulation starts to shit the bed in terms of accuracy with the 5th gen, which is the ceiling of consumer level FPGAs.

I love the mister and genuinely don't get all the hate for it here, makes no sense to me. Ended up being one of the best /vr/ related purchases I've made. It plays near everything 5th and below outside of the N64, it's compatiable with a wide variety of peripherals that are a lot more cumbersome to get working on PC, there's no additional input or audio delay, and it's way easier to hook up to a CRT than messing with crtemu drivers and converters on PC, It's plug and play, literally just works It's a practically identical experience to using real hardware. Do you occasionally run into a bug that wasn't on real hardware? Well sure but you run into them as rare as you would with modern software emulation and the support for the mister is so active it gets cleaned up relatively quickly

For the devices it emulates it's replaced the hardware for me. And if you were starting from scratch it would easily be one of the best and most cost effective purchases you could make in regards to retro games. Hell I think a neo geo and flashcart alone is already more than the mister. I guess I just don't get why a board dedicated to retro games would dislike a device that's super good for both playing and even preserving the original hardware experience

for arcade cores? kind of, yeah... only recently we got dodonpachi and dangun feveron, but i think that's about it for cave, and those are the ones running on 68k, afaik jotego was going to start work on PGM but there's nothing on that front (and with the cheap ass prices of a PGM and repro carts i don't think there's a lot of demand). We do have a garegga/kingdom grand prix/bakraid core now but idk how accurate that is.
Here's a list: https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/Main_MiSTer/wiki/Arcade-Cores-List
Besides some other sparse things, there's a lot left out.
Most other arcade cores i've seen are, like, late 70s/80s and a few odd things here and there but a lot of people insist they lack testing. By own admission of the people working on it, the focus of MiSTER is consoles and not arcade boards, which kind of sucks because from a preservation point of view, arcade boards are the ones in dire straits.
And, I think in some cases it can even be better than the boards themselves. If that raizing core works, batrider should play better since there's like 3 frames of input lag or something with the actual board you can't do shit about, and raizing boards break so fucking often it would serve a purpose.

If you care about consoles mostly though, fpga is the way to go. There's still some work to be done but emulation accuracy and input lag are so much better than emulators that it's worth the cash.

yeah. For the prices they command it's odd nobody has tried making reproduction boards, reading arcade projects forum they apparently do but it's all very secretive and nobody gives any info around, but the chips needed to make one aren't completely extinct it seems.
This is purely speculation on my part though. All their ports suck ass (the non M2 ones) and 1-2k for a cheap board, 8k for a daifukkatsu/saidaioujou is RETARDED. Cave were their worst enemy when it came to distributing their games because nobody could actually play them since their releases were so fucking limited compared to the gargantuan demand their games have even now

>> No.9135745

>since their releases were so fucking limited compared to the gargantuan demand their games have even now
Which is why you think they'd be much more cooperative with Degica (or whoever they're using now to yet again release DS) on the ports, both in number of titles and accuracy. We get neither. On the bright side, they stopped using suicide batteries on their boards some years back. So there's that.

>> No.9135750

yeah, degica, but their ports so far have kind of sucked. the M2 ports are no doubt the best they've ever done, to the point they're basically arcade-perfect, but that's just 3 games so far, and all of them on older hardware.

No matter what manner of tweaking I do I end up with one of those. And its not a power thing, my system doesnt even use 20% of its resources emulating mesen and higan.

You don't need to play on archaic failing hardware to be an enthusiast.

I can get sharper video and sound, better framerates and loading, the same amount of input latency, and so much more from my MiSTer than you do from your "real hardware".

>>9155792
Emulation isn't inherently a bad thing. Even if you consider the MiSTer to be hardware emulation, it's still vastly superior to original hardware. Also emulators like Dolphin have surpassed a real GameCube and Wii like 10 years ago, with 4K rendering, true widescreen, etc.

I used to be like you two for years. I bought into the "real hardware = better" meme, spending thousands on real systems, flashcarts, mods, cables, etc., thinking that the higher barrier to entry, relatively obscure mods, and playing on authentic consoles made my choice in how to play older games the best. But then I realized that the Mister does all of this far better for a fraction of the size and cost. In retrospect, having dozens of plastic boxes and hundreds of messy cables is autistic coomlector shit. MiSTer emulation is so good that I'm selling all my real hardware now. I told people here that I was selling my NeoGeo AES and they cried "LARPer!" lmao

Convenience, future-proofing against hardware failure, access to a ton of retro consoles and computers you wouldn't have otherwise purchased. I don't have one (yet), but you're being silly if you don't see the value in a small machine that can play pretty much anything PS1 and below with great accuracy and no lag. FGC tards are like a 50:50 mix of esl retards who can't explain what netcode actually is and people who probably did very scientific testing as to why a game has x amount of input lag to win an argument on a forum.
I'd say most people wouldn't be able to tell a difference between even the shittiest of PC emus and real consoles given the AV side of things stayed the same.
