My experience learning was a mess because I'm unorganized and chaotic. For desoldering capacitors I reccomend chipquik low melt solder and a handheld desoldering pump. For soldering them on leaded solder, for the snes cap kit, it has large capacitors like in a beginner kit the hard part is the board does not have holes for the leads so you have to awkardly bend and solder the leads (legs) onto the flat board. Check with the shield to make sure it screws back on with the caps. Learn on old stuff the components are large.

Basically zero. Fumes are from the flux not the lead, and the danger of handling solid/molten lead is basically negligible (aside from burning yourself) unless you're a chinking soldering in a sweatshop 20 hours a day 7 days a week. Just do it in an open or well ventilated area to get the fumes out of your face.

Well I read a bit about it but I've got very little experience with electronics. I thought this would be a good project to start with. All the boards I looked at have some kind of controller chip, so I'd need to know what that is or what it does. Also many of them have extra components.

The pin layout says A/B share the same pin, and Start/C share the same pin. No idea how that works and couldn't find any good info on it.
http://wiki.icomp.de/wiki/DE-9_Joystick#Pinout

Looked at some youtube videos of making joysticks and they're mostly just people making cases, which isn't the hard part to figure out obviously.

The chip is a multiplexer. That's how multiple inputs share the same pin. Not at all complicated, but you will need to have a basic understanding of how it works in order to design and build a controller. Also worth learning about shift registers while your at it. With those two types of parts you can build controllers for just about any system up to mid 90's.

I have a Hakko soldering station and an SMT rework iron.

Also is there a guide to this process, especially discharging the ol' whatchacallit, flyback transformer? I really don't feel like dying.

>> No.8949450

Warning: Blog Post -

I just got a 16 inch RCA TV delivered a few days ago. Now I can finally test my electronics, and fix anything that needs fixing. I'm also going to be looking into buying flashcarts for my various systems (NES, Genesis, SNES for now. DS and maybe gameboy color later).

I probably wont do much modding, unless it's something simple and easy. I'm functional with a soldering iron, but i'm no electrical engineer, and I prefer practicality to a challenge.

Done: Replaced my PS2's bum laser, and put FMCB on the memory card for future use.

In process: Need to clean or open up my NES. See if there's any bad connections, capacitors or what else. It's flashing and not booting games.

Gotta replace my Xbox 360's bum laser, and look into 360 flash mods

Other stuff: I somehow lost my Genesis, and it's pissing me off. It has to be around my apartment somewhere, but it seems like it up and magically vanished.

On the positive side, my Gamecube's laser is OK after some initial testing turned up a few disk read errors. Played an hour of Windwaker without issue.

Basically I got my hands on an RGB modded 64, and the picture is fine except for when the screen is darker - For example Kokiri forest is fine, but deku tree is too dark, forcing me to just up brightness to max on my CRT, washing out the colors, making it look hardly different to s-video lol

My biggest concern is how do I know if the screws were used for sexual acts and then reused and put back into the cartridge? I heard on here that Nintendo fans have a things they do sometimes where they “sound” using the screws for some reason. I’m not sure if you’re familiar with the term or not but this apparently involves introducing an object into the urethra for sexual pleasure. Is there any kind of way I can know if the N64 cartridge I’m getting has clean screws?

Why the fuck would I want one of my cartridges to have bootleg screws? I’d the screws aren’t OEM the entire cart is worthless to me.

Just cleaned my GBA's power switch, I had no idea that it could affect battery life and audio output that much

Good for you, the metal part inside the power switch flew away while I held it with tweezers. 2nd mobo it was flat out corroded away. Now I have to buy replacements :(

Which part?
The cover or the actually switch
That’s unfortunate but yeah, it had a low hum while I was playing before

What’s the point of having a complete collection if your carts don’t have the OEM sticker? Or the OEM cartridge itself? Or the screws? Do you think you have a complete collection if you print out manuals and boxes? The OEM screws weigh a precise amount, I test them every time I buy a game. The problem is that the Nintendo fans keep using the screws for weird shit. you do know that Nintendo used a unique brand of staple in their manual books don’t you? Or do you not care? Yes I won’t use a staple that isn’t OEM either.

the metal underneath black slider worst part is these were nip special editions I was cleaning and fixing up! I'll feel so weird using gba sp switches, as that's the only OEM part I can find!

Wow, how’d that happen? Too forceful?
I’m pretty new to soldering and just put in a new screen and put in a power cleaning mod but noticed the audio was buzzing very loud and found out the power switch is actually integral to how well the system runs which is weird
