What's in store for this platform after the Saturn core, and those dudes trying to miniaturise it and make a portable MiSTer?

Alternatively, when do you think an FPGA dev platform with double or more the ALU will be affordable?

current cores being worked on include Game and Watch (which will also ultimately include Konami/Tiger/R-Zone), Commodore 128, IBM XT. There's also a SparcStation core in the works. Neo Geo Pocket is also currently being worked on by Jotego which will essentially mark the entirety of the portable game systems catalogue. Jaguar is also still being worked on and either the current core or a new one by Jotego could be completed.

After that, perhaps CD-i, various arcade systems, and perhaps save states, net play, and other features could be added to existing cores. Maybe 3DO but it might be in the same ballpark as N64 and not realistic for the DE10.

Not sure what else people might need after that.

In addition to what anon wrote above, someone is making a DS core. It probably won't be completable but it might be able to get 2D only games running. I'm really not sure what the point is.
There's also talk of trying to get N64 working using a hybrid approach, emulating just the CPU with the Arm side (or a Raspberry Pi) and everything else on the FPGA side. Might still be difficult considering how fast the RCP runs, but it's interesting because of how unfeasible pure FPGA emulation is for more powerful consoles. The next MiSTer will probably use some form of hybrid approach for stuff like PS2, whenever it happens to come out.

you're only stupid if it turns out you want it now when you could have bought it for a lot cheaper before covid and didn't get it because you were waiting for such and such core. If you have original hardware or otherwise don't feel the need, then that's fine too.

If the realtek chip on the driver board is the right one, you can flash it with the Laser Bear firmware that makes it and the volume controls work.

Also, I bought two of his monitor cases- the CRT-style one worked fine, but the VESA one was severely misaligned. I tried attaching the driver board with glue, and that kinda worked, but there was a fault (somewhere) between the PSU and the display and after gluing it to the case I couldn't separate the parts to test. The screen I can salvage, but the case and driver board are fucked. The case was 50 USD, shipping was another 60 USD, and delivery from the USA took like 6 weeks (three times as long as from China which was free), so I have no idea if it's even worth complaining because he'd maybe give me a partial refund, and with >100USD down the drain it feels like throwing money away to spend another 50 bucks on a second driver board, ~100 USD on shipping a second case (?and the when it the screen is also fucked?).

2. If I had access to a 3D printer, I'd have just done this https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4721767/files because all I wanted for the second screen was a VESA mount option, but comparing quotes from printing services locally the cost was "get it from laserkike at a huge cost, or you may as well just buy yourself a fucking prusa"
3. I needed at least one unit with the laserbear firmware to use with MiSTer because of the RTD2556T's compatibility with variable refresh rates, and weighing the options the economics worked out best if did it this way and I bought the parts to assemble two. Unfortunately I didn't count on the 3D print being all fucked up; yeah, it's my fault for ruining the VESA one with glue, but it wouldn't have happened to begin with if I hadn't been shipped bunk merchandise.

That's still only 256MB total, a CD can hold 700. Assuming they were not some special format that held like 1GB or more.

It would also make booting a game a chore since CPS3 systems took a while to "boot" on powerup as they had the copy the entire disk into RAM, unless they break their 100% accuracy pledge by letting you have some sort of save state from right after the system loads the game into RAM.

Just about everyone who works on the MiSTer has said that N64 is impossible, the FPGA just does not have the room for it, and I believe the RAM access is far too slow.

Though people in the past did say PS1 was impossible, but the PS1 is pushing the MiSTer to it's utter limit in terms of FPGA emulation. It is still only 99.99% accurate with sound instead of 100% unless you go dual-RAM.

If you want 100% sound accuracy in the PS1 core instead of the like 99.99% accuracy it has with one (The dev has said they aren't even bothering to focus on trying to port 100% accuracy to one module since there are far more important bugs and features to work on). And currently the Saturn core is a mess of games working in the 1 or 2 RAM version, but that core is also very early Alpha (The PS1 core originally needed two RAM modules as well).

Beyond that, nothing I can think of that exists for MiSTer or is currently in development needs two RAM modules. It was more of a thing earlier in the MiSTer's life.

That's not saying that it will never need them, but considering that the PS1 is already more or less maxing out the MiSTer and is the system's limit, with something such as N64 being likely impossible, and anything beyond that definitely being impossible, I don't foresee anything new needing two RAM modules in the future.

Worst case scenario, the Saturn core might need it for several or many games once it's finished.

Because MiSTer might be able to just about if not perfectly replicate old games, but the feeling of a good controller in your hands is something hard to get right- and not something you can recompile, update over the internet and deploy on an fpga. Unless you have like a thousand-dollar 3D printer.

My standards aren't that high personally, it's just the race to the bottom on manufacturing costs for third and even first party controllers (looking at you, Sony- and also you, Nintendo with your awful Switch Pro Dpad) makes everything feel like a cheap piece of shit. I'd kill for a premium controller that focused on build quality- think mechanical switches and a titanium shell, as opposed to the Xbox Elite's focus on modularity (and atrocious QC).
Also I get why it doesn't happen, but Nintendo could really turn the screws on people if they took a leaf out of Apple's book and released something like the OLED Switch in a more premium finish with aluminum and glass. Gamers are an aging demographic, they have money and they want nice things, this shouldn't be left to nerds with a cnc machine like that steelsticks douchebag who hasn't restocked his shit in 18 months.
