This, it's not as there's people left unaware of such an obvious fact. SMB is a timeleas masterclass in game design for a reason

Actually DDP is based on an early SMB2 prototype, so it all comes full circle

Was my emulator broken or does running make you run VERY fast? I played it for the first time last night and figured maybe my emulator was wrong and I just hardly used the run button

Start talking about how amazing the storage sizes were back then, instead. How'd the manage to store all that game in such a small size?

Maybe kids were just less retarded in the past and it only seemed like the level taught you how to do things.

>TEACHES YOU HOW TO PLAY THE GAME
I hate that kind of video game design analysis. A great game that doesn't "teach you how to play it" isn't harmed by that fact in the least. Almost all of these little observations that geeks love to make are irrelevant to quality

Well ya see, games back then came with these things called, what was it gain, oh right! INSTRUCTION MANUALS. They explained things like controls, what the items did, and basically gave you the information needed to understand what the game expected out of you.

But they are. Show me a good game that doesn't teach through design? Games with shit level design are shit. Modern tutorials that have to tell you how the game functions are shit.

It is the single most well designed screen in video game history, of course people are going to take note of it.

I wasn't making a tutorial vs. teaching through design argument. I'm saying that games don't have to intentionally teach anything at all. You've got an input device and when you press buttons and keys and sticks, stuff happens on screen. That's enough. This teaching by design thing mostly boils down to easing the player into difficulty--which isn't some kind of genius maneuver by the designer or an epiphany worthy of mentioning--but even that isn't necessary. And smooth difficulty curves are overrated anyway. I wouldn't mind more unpredictably difficult and confusing games

>> No.8955392

>>8955360
Nobunaga's Ambition is pretty simple and plays more like a board game, ROTK is the more big brained version of it, both series are neat. You should try Nobunaga 1 again on the ZNEZZZ or the Genny.
The rest of their strategy game output tries to make in-game information as confusing and hard as possible to view, so you don't immediately figure out the AI is braindead (and a fucking cheater in higher difficulty levels) and the actual underlying game is shallow as fuck. Don't feel bad for not getting those, even their manuals lack critical information on purpose.
