Play the SNES version instead. You get more exp and money for battles there and they added some permanent stat boosting items.

2 is really bad in the last 20-25% of the game, including the volcano dungeon. Some of the required items are literally in the middle of the ocean (2-3 times) or cheap walk around the edge of the map secrets. You might have a better time playing it on anything but the NES.

Everything is clued in or directly told by NPCs and you're given an item that warns you when the key item is nearby

Have you not saved her? Dragon Quest actually has different ending cutscenes depending on whether or not the princess got saved.
