I didn't expect to ever get back into retro game collecting, especially considered the price hike in recent years but I saw a cheap NES at a second hand store and couldn't resist. I don't own a CRT anymore and don't have room for one either, what do I need to play it without too much lag on a modern TV?

just use FCEUX and liberate yourself from rotting plastic and eye cancer causing TVs that weigh 200 pounds

That's because you can't "get back into" something you haven't started yet

Scalp the rotting plastic and make the mature choice.

Is that a variant of the SMB/DH cartridge? It doesn't look like the familiar one.

Look closely. There's white text in the middle. Can't make out what it says.

I zoomed in. It says "Action Pak." A cursory Alta Vista search yielded little information, likely a mockup made for the photoshoot.

Could be. The SMB/DH cart was the pack in for the NES "Action Set" so they might not have settled on the exact cover art at the time of the shoot.

It's a likely scenario but it's also weird how only the little kid seems to be actually looking at the screen.

You don't. Get a small CRT.

Get a CRT and a flash cart. There you go, you're done collecting.

Lies.

console + small CRT + flash cart + stereo speakers is all you need for a good experience

Was pretty big into Super Nintendo in my early 20s and have 50-something games, but if that doesn't count sure mate
>>8850664
If I just wanted to play the games I obviously wouldn't need any advice. Call me a faggot but I'm just nostalgic for the old days and want to emulate some of those old feelings. I find it more fun to play games if you're limited to what you own and can't just start up whatever whenever and play nothing because you're overwhelmed with choices
>>8850734
Well, it would be a real bother but there's always refurnishing that can be done obviously. I was just hoping there was a good enough compromise in 2022

If you really absolutely have to play on a modern TV that doesn't have composite inputs then you're gonna need an upscaler. RetroTink made a "cheap" one ($80) that supports composite and S-video that I would really recommend as the best choice, but they're sold out and unfortunately aren't going to be back in stock for the foreseeable future. RetroTink has other scalers in stock but they're definitely more expensive (cheapest one is like $120 I think) and might not really be worth it to you if you're only planning to use a scaler to play your NES and nothing else. There are other brands of scalers too, of course, but from what I understand RetroTink is the cheapest brand with little to no lag.

Your TV might already have composite, though. If you hook up your NES, turn on game mode or whatever and don't notice any lag then I'd say you're set.

Honestly, I think picking up a cheap 14" CRT is your best option if your modern TV doesn't support composite. It's certainly the cheapest way to go about this.

You know what's really weird? How the NES isn't even turned on. And it's not even connected to the TV. And the sky is blue, not purple. And the cartridge for the game they're playing isn't even in the console. I bet those people aren't even really related. I bet that the picture was entirely stages for that ad.

Retard.

even if the tv has composite inputs cound they be not terrible? i doubt that.

Who knows; could be worth a try. The only reason I got an upscaler for my 4K TV is because instead of actual composite I have a single RCA jack and a splitter for composite, which makes the picture noticeably muddy and unplayably laggy for anything but turn-based stuff.
I used to use a 1080p Bravia that had composite and component and played retro stuff on there with no noticeable lag. I'd imagine there's at least one modern TV still out there with decent composite input.
