Are the retro touhou games any good?

>> No.883327

If you ask me, only phantasmagoria of dim dream is worthwhile.

I've played 1 - 5 and really enjoyed them all. 1 in particular for whatever reason.

LLS and MS are good, PoDD is alright too. MS also has one of my favourite final bosses in the series, and some pretty cute characters.

As I forgot to bump, I'll add that HRtP is worth checking quickly if only because it's completely different from the rest of the series.

I did a play of Lotus Land Story recently, realized Reimu has and always will be my most hated character to fight against.

Anyway, the games themselves are good, bar Touhou 1, since it kind of lacks of a lot of stuff..

Oh yeah I forgot, the PC-98 games are worth looking at solely for the music. It's disappointing how little remixes there are of them.

>>883386
Ah, good ol' stage 4 MS.

Ah, good ol' stage 2 MS.

>> No.883405

anyone know how to get a gamepad to work with the older games? EoSD and onward have spoiled me with the convenience.

>>883402
I second this, I booted up Lotus Land Story the other day and loved the themes. Its a pity how the touhou fandom only look at EoSD and beyond.

This should work I think, but then again I'm an idiot when it comes to emulators.

Could I have a link to NEXT? I get a shitload of hits on google and want to make sure I grab the right version.

I dunno, I actually really liked (and prefer) the pixel art they had going. Thou it was hard to dodge bullets sometimes due to the colors mixing with the background.

It's much less forgiving than the modern Touhous. Pickups fall lightning fast, there's no POC, and the power meter takes forever to fill. The patterns have a lower bullet count but are also more challenging than artistic.

They are still good games with great music as you would expect from Zun. I always preferred his older music.

They were made by a bunch of college students for a computer that could barely do action games. For what they were, and what the creators had to work with, they're actually pretty fucking good.

What what to say about the music, FM synth is the best

>> No.884762

Mystic Square has some total bullshit same-color-bullets-as-background issues going on that make it insanely hard at times, and Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream is a total assault on the fingers in the harder modes, but darn if I wouldn't love to see Windows remakes of the PC-98 games that fixed old issues. Not being able to see your hit box is a pain sometimes and not being able to focus in Story of Eastern Wonderland can be annoying, especially against Marisa.

But, that'll never happen, aside from some Windows character themed fan remakes that just aren't as good. Feels bad man.

EoSD doesn't have hitboxes either, but most of the time this is all you need to know, and as with EoSD There's usually some distinctive feature on the character that shows where it is.
