8805770 No.8805770 [Reply] [Original]

Are any of the retranslations or Chrono Trigger worth playing over the original now? Some of the alcohol censoring always felt a little out of place for me, but is there anything else you're really missing out on that somebody needed to go in and fix 30 years later?

I wish that the people who dedicate themselves to retranslating games that already got a wide release for the rest of the world would move on to games that never left Japan.

The DS version had a more fitting translation I think.

No one cares. I personally just play the original. I'd rather invest my time in fun randomizer runs.

the Kwhazit translation is grossly misunderstood. it's meant to be a literal reference guide to the original Japanese, not a proper translation. patching it was a mistake, as it led to it being judged as the latter.
to answer the original question: honestly yes, it's worth it if you have a good translation. for CT I'd recommend Doctor L + LethargicOwl, it's said to be the best.
don't get me wrong, Woolsey did well, but there are flaws and limitations to his work, mostly because it was a censored rushjob. there are a few points in CT where the meaning got really screwy or obscure, although it's consistent the majority of the time.

Yeah, it feels like there are more English translations of Chrono Trigger and FF6 than there are of the Bible at this point. The only one that really needs a retranslation, in my opinion, is Secret of Mana since Woolsey had to cut out half the script to get it done in time. There have been a few attempts but, as far as I know, none of them have really succeeded at properly restoring it.

The DS translation is basically perfect. Although I guess I can't say that since the port isnt technically /vr/.

No you don't, because those people never actually know japanese, they're just turbo autists who believe that their spiritual connection to japan achieved from watching over 500 animays will correctly guide them through google translate like some fucking ouija board.

How much even was there? I admit it's been a hot minute since I last played but I remember that ONE mini game at the fair and that's basically it. Maybe some extremely minor characters in a pub?

It's this. They don't speak more Japanese than anybody who took a college class. They just use Google translate and the existing English script to make something that "sounds better" to them.

of course you can, that's the beauty of /vr/'s rules.
are you seeing the thread about the chrono-chross-"remaster" released just a few days ago? A-OK!
you can talk about remakes/"remakes"/remasters as long as the original game is /vr/-legal according to the rules, regardless on which platform it's released.
but heaven forbid to you talk about any original game released after 2007 for a /vr/-legal platform, better brace for impact.

it's not just changing sake & beer into soup & soda, there are other issues.
First, when Spekkio describes the history of magic, he mentions that after Zeal, magic was off-limits to humans, and only "wizards" could use it. "Wizards" was supposed to refer to Mystics, so the line got garbled.
That's not all. If you bring Magus to Ozzie's fort, Ozzie asks him why he led them on and used them. Originally, Magus says he only wanted power, which was left out. This was a major revelation about Magus' motivations, so this was a serious omission.
Then there's Frog's faux Ye Olde Englishe accent, which honestly comes across rather pompous and buffoonish, especially when no one else in 600 ad uses it. Frog was nothing like that originally.
Late game, Gaspar says:
>someone close to you needs help. find this person... fast
this was supposed to refer to the sidequests for most of your characters, but ended up confusing everyone.
That's not everything, but these examples should get the point across that there are objective faults in the original script, thus room for retranslation. With that said, Woolsey did solid work more often than not.

The DS ver retranslation was generally an improvement in my opinion however some people dislike the plot for some storyline changes/extra content to better tie it in to chrono cross

literally nothing.

>his was a major revelation about Magus' motivations, so this was a serious omission.
Except all of that was still easily inferred anyways. We knew Magus's motivations and him just telling Ozzy "LOL BECAUSE" is hardly the cap on the character. So again, literally nothing.

>Hatting on Frog's accent
Yeah, you're just a cunt.

I'm not a cunt. I can see the charm of his accent, but it just seems silly when no one else from 600ad uses it. Besides, the original Japanese doesn't characterize him that way, and there's something to be said for the original creative vision.
As for Magus, yes it can be inferred, but that line is still important for revealing that aspect of his character beyond all doubt.
My examples weren't exhaustive, either. A number of lines in Zeal were much better and more philosophical in the original. You also didn't address the infamous Gaspar line that confused so many ppl.
Point is, any one of these things can be brushed aside, but when you combine it all together with censorship, then you can make a case for retranslation. To reiterate, I respect TWs work, but it has its limitations. Again, Doctor L + LethargicOwl is my best recommendation for CT.

You know, I might actually do it. It wouldn't require any actual translation, and I think there are tools available for Chrono Trigger, and the script has likely been ripped from the DS port. So it's basically just a bunch of manual work, I can deal with that.

Biggest issue in Chrono is translating 魔王 as Magus. Something like Shining Force 1 where so much was changed or cut entirely could definitely use a retranslation though.

TWs greatest strength was in names. Mystics, Espers, War of the Magi, etc. it all works great. As for Gato, it's perfect because the spanish connotation is there, it fits his cat ears, and it's nice & short.
